Chereads / The Murders of Green Hills / Chapter 2 - High School Blues

Chapter 2 - High School Blues

A few months went by and things died down, Jesse had been so caught up in working at his uncle's shop he'd forgotten school was about to start up again. He had a week before he had to go back and instead of partying hard, like everyone else. He stayed in his own space at his uncle's deli. Working every minute until the bus was outside.

The week flew by and he was excited to get back into the swing of things. He drove to school in his Jeep, it was pretty busted but it worked so he didn't complain. When Jesse walked into school on the first day it was like a cheesy highschool movie. He was obviously good looking. When he walked down the halls the sea of people parted like the ocean for Moses. He got the high-fives from all the football players.

You could hear "Hi Jesse~" echo down the hall from all the cheerleaders. The teachers all said hello. Well it was just another day for him.

He has his morning classes, goes to practice then lunch. After that he has a free period then theater. The rest of his day in honors courses then he goes home. All his dayer are relatively similar and he lived in a perfect loop.

The homecoming dance was in a month and the football team had been practicing non stop for the big game. Jesse went to practice after school as it was business as usual. Shocking. They ran through their plays and did a few drills. It was around 7 when practice was over. He went back to the locker room and showered, then got changed. He headed home and ate dinner with his Uncle, they talked about things like sports and the lottery. Nothing with real meaning or substance, but comforting for Jesse. After he finished eating he went back to his room to get started on his homework.

He breezed through his geometry packet, then completed his history outline. Finally he finished studying for his chem test, watched a little TV and went to bed. The next day in the locker room he had overheard some of the other guys talking about some other guy. Jesse didn't mind it until he heard one of them say something about needles. This piques his interest so he waits for everyone to leave and snuck back in to hear the rest of their conversation.

"You seriously need to lay off bro!" Evan said, sounding more concerned than he wanted to.

"My game has been so good lately, and you do it too!" Aidan said, poking Evan in the chest.

"Yeah but your gonna get sick,I don't do it that much anymore anyways."

"Man whatever. I don't know about you, but I'm gonna be a starter this season. Whatever it takes." Aiden had already made up his mind. He was set on being the best. Evan was worried but knew he couldn't get all high and mighty now so he just left it alone. He finished changing and left the locker room. When he stepped out into the hall he saw Jesse.

"Hey man!" Jesse said scratching the back of his head.

"Hey." Evan said suspiciously. "Practice ended a while ago, why are you hanging

around the locker room?" I sounded like a question, but felt more like an interrogation.

"Oh, uh I left my water bottle in the weight room, wanted to grab it in case I go on a jog later."

"Ok, see you later." He reluctantly left and Jesse waited a moment before leaving himself. The drive home seemed longer than usual, he contemplated telling the coach or confronting them directly. He didn't want to get involved but also didn't know if it was his place to say something at all.

He went back home and thought about it for a while. He was sitting at his desk in his room when he heard someone walk in. He turned to see who it was and was a little shocked when he saw Sofie standing in the doorway.

"Hey Jes." Sofie was Jesse's ex-girlfriend. They dated on and off for 2 years and were left as being 'just friends' they were good about it, never caused drama. They hung out on occasion, and contrary to popular belief they got along just fine.

"Hey, how did you get in?"

"Your mom let me in when she left for work, I was going to climb in through the window but it seemed a little to John Hues for my taste." She said, stepping and planting herself down on his bed.

"Yes, well thanks for not climbing in my window I guess. So what brings you by?"

"My convertible." She said laughing as she laid back.

"So nothing important?"

"Nope."

"Well that's great considering that I just got a new movie from the video store, and I was going to watch it." He said getting up from his desk and grabbing the tape out of his bag.

"No way! what movie?" She asked, propping herself up on her elbows.

"Love is eternal." He said walking over to his tv.

"Jes I pray to god that you're joking or I'm revisiting the going through the window."

He put the movie in and sat down on his bed getting comfortable next to Sofie.

"It's zombie slayer 4 and 5." He said as the opening credits came across the screen.

"Double feature?"

"Double feature!" She sighed in relief and moved around a bit until she was satisfied with herself. They had gotten through the first two hours of the movie when Sofie had fallen asleep. Jesse contemplated moving her, or waking her up, but instead he just sat there still until he drifted off to sleep himself.

It was around 4 am when Jesse's mother got home from work. She walked into the house, took off her shoes, and headed upstairs. She walked past Jesse's room and heard the most putrid of noises. She opened the door and walked in.

"Goodness, I don't know why he likes watching such horrific things." She shut off the tv and saw that Sofie was lying next to him.

"Jeez, I don't even know what to say to that." She sighed and walked out shutting the door.

The next morning rolled around and the door flew open.

"Rise and shine sleepy heads, you've got school and I made waffles!" Jesse and Sofie woke up and were shocked that they had fallen asleep, and that his mom wasn't mad.

"What just happened?" Jesse asked, getting up out of bed.

"It could be worse." She said, rolling over onto her side.

"How?" He asked, pulling out clothes for school.

"We could be naked." She said still lying in bed, completely unfazed.

"Sof, you're not helping. Come on, we have school and you have to go home and get changed." He said changing his clothes.

"Ugh, it's too far. Can I borrow a t-shirt?" She asked, finally getting up.

"Sure, you know where they are." He said as he grabbed his bag and headed down stairs to eat.

"Morning sweetie, where is Sofie?"

"She's changing." Jesse grabbed a plate and sat down at the table. Shortly after he started eating, Sofie emerged from his room.

"Hey party people!" She said, stepping into the kitchen.

"Good morning, grab some food before Jesse eats it all." She said before she went upstairs to go to bed. Sofie got her food and went and sat next to Jesse at the table. They finished eating and headed off to school.

" That wasn't bad at all, you're just paranoid."

"No I'm not, this is bad."

"Whatever you say." They drove separately since Sofie had came over the previous night in her own car. They got to school and went their separate ways until they're free period.

Everyone had gone out to the common area and when Jesse got out there he was bombarded by a group of girls asking about him and Sofie. In no time he was surrounded, being attacked by questions about why she was wearing his shirt, were

they back together, was it any good. And so on, and so on. Sofie was sitting on a picnic table on her phone.

Jesse's phone buzzed and he saw that he had got a text from Sofie's saying 'sorry :( ' he responded 'it's cool' and managed to escape to the library where he spent the rest of his free period.
