Chapter 20 - 19. No Duel? ;Three-headed dog.

Hermione excitedly entered Girls dormitory after they came back from their Exercise and breakfast. Adam had informed her about his plan to learn new magic. They had spent their time walking around and taking pictures in the castle since they came to Hogwarts. They were not practising magic at all which made Hermione really worried when she thought she might not be able to perform magic in the classroom if she doesn't practice.

Now that they decided to practice new spells, Hermione quickly ran into her dormitory to read and make a list about the spells she wanted to learn. She even decided to make a list of all the spells that they had learned over the last month to plan where their progress is lacking in. She wanted to make sure that they won't fall behind too much in a particular class of magic. She wanted to keep balance in charms, DADA spells, Transfiguration and even potions.

Adam could see the excitement in Hermione's eyes so he didn't stop her, instead he told her to look for some spells that can be used in the duels. Hermione was also interested in Dueling after watching the duel between Adam and Draco. She didn't want to feel helplessness that she felt that day so she happily agreed.

Adam went back to his room and checked if he had missed anything new in his system. He had nothing to do as Athena would probably come back late at night or maybe tomorrow with his present so he decided to spend the day in his room.
Adam even chatted with Harry and Ron, even though Ron wanted to keep his distance. Harry was happy to chat with Adam as Adam told him about different magical spells and their effects. Harry was also new to magical world so he was really enthusiastic about the magic. They also discussed about their muggle life. Even though Adam knew about Harry's story, Adam still felt bad for Harry when he heard Harry's story. As for Ron, he also got interested in this chat and joined them. Adam was surprised to hear that Ron's mom, Molly, did not let him use magic wand till he was 11.
Draco had learned spells so Adam thought maybe in this world, pure-blood families taught some magic spells earlier to their offsprings. But now it looked like not many had this privilege that Draco had which also relieved some of Adam's worries.
Adam felt sorry for Harry if he really faced Draco in the duel tonight but he still didn't say anything. He wanted to see that three-headed dog so it was still better to let them meet at night.

Adam spent his Birthday in such relaxing way as this was probably the last time he could actually relax before getting strong enough to face his problems. He had now decided to get stronger so he was going to do it with all of his efforts.
As Adam was busy relaxing in his room, Hermione searched through all the spellbooks she had with her. Her roommates Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil were looking at Hermione with bewildered look on their faces.

"Hermione, what are you doing? What are these lists?" Parvati asked, glancing at the lists of spells that Hermione had just made. They didn't even know of half of the spells in these list.

Hermione replied without even lifting her head as she continued to write in her list, "These are the spells that Adam and I can use. And that list in your hand is the list of spells that we are going to learn next."

Parvati and Lavender were shocked to hear these words. They had seen that there were more than 20 spells written in that list which meant that Hermione could actually use more than 20 spells! First-years could at most use 2-3 spells before they are taught in their classes. And if they are muggle-born then there was no chance to even learn a single spell but Hermione learned more than 20 spells. Lavender could not help but think Hermione's words as a joke, "You are joking right? There's no way anyone can learn more than 20 spells before the school starts. And you are just a muggle-born; it's impossible that you can learn so many spells before entering hogwarts."

Lavender didn't think much about what she had just said but Parvati knew that this was not something you should say to someone. She was just about to say something but Hermione had already lifted her head, glaring at Lavender. Hermione was really sensitive to these things since her arrival to the wizarding world was also welcomed by these kind of words. Hermione raised her voice at Lavender,
"What do you mean by 'I'm just a Muggle-born'? Is it just because you are from pure-blood family that you think that we are inferior? Do you think that you can't do it so no one can do it? I did learn these spells. Adam could easily learn them as well. So do you still think Muggle-born are inferior? If so then it's really ridiculous and narrow minded thought. I would've cast these spells to show you but now I don't think I need to do this."

Hermione picked her lists before storming out of the the girls dormitory. Parvati called out to her from behind but Hermione had already left with faint tears in her eyes. Hermione glanced at the boys dormitory as she was leaving but she did not see anyone so she left the common room and heading towards the library.


Hermione spent her day in the library all alone before Adam joined her in the evening. Adam went there to look for the spells but he didn't expect to see Hermione sitting in the corner table of the library. Hermione was happy when she saw Adam but then she started to complain about Lavender. Adam felt like his head was about to burst with all these silly things but he still tried to convince her that Lavender probably didn't mean to look down on her. It took a while but he still managed to put some wise words in Hermione's mind.

By the time of dinner, Both of them had already made a list of spells that they wanted to learn. This time Adam didn't avoid spells that were taught in the classes. Now he was more concerned about his strength than getting bored in the classes.
There were many spells in their list but it was hard to learn stronger magic spells that can be used in the duels with the limited amount of magical power their bodies had. Adam was feeling qualitative and quantitative change in his magical power after his magic level had reached 10; But it was still growing so it was quite unstable. He knew he would probably reach or pass second year students once magical power in his body stabilises. There was no proper measure about the magical powers so Adam didn't know what level of magical power does second and third year have but he was sure that his magic power was propably the same as theirs, if not stronger.

Adam and Hermione had learned 25 spells over the last month when they practised in the leaky cauldron. Three cleaning spells- scouring charm, wiping charm, skurge scouring charm. There were spells for darning, packing up and washing up. They had also learned a spell that can be used to prepare meals but both of them were terrible cooks so there was not much use for them.
All of these were household magics. Some of which were easy, while remaining were quite hard but once you understood the principle behind these magical spells, it was really easy to use them. washing up and packing up spells can be considered easy but also hard if you don't have any idea about them.
For Adam and Hermione, washing and packing up spells were probably the easiest to learn as they simply thought of creating a loop of actions that they wanted to perform. It was kind of similar to Levitation charm where you can make objects float in the air and control them in whatever way you wanted; it was just that in these spells you had to use the magic to make objects follow a set of actions for every different objects, like washing up plates or clothes, in orderly manner. They had even washed clothes and plates by their hands to understand what actions they had to set in this loop which led them to learn and use these spells proficiently in a short time; but both of them still preferred to do these things by their own hands instead of using magic for these silly things.

Except for these household magic spells, they had learned wand-lighting charm, levitation charm, disarming charm and also the wand-extinguishing charm from Professor Flitwik during his visits. They also learned knockback jinx and smokescreen charm/spell that Draco had used in the duel with Adam. These spells were really good for protection and survival if they had to run away from the danger. Adam also taught Hermione how to use basic Transfiguration to turn an object into different form or object. It took a while but Hermione still managed to learn Disarming charm and Transfiguration spell.

Next spells that they learned were probably the easiest- making red-green sparks from their wands. They were more like magic tricks than real magic but it was still considered a spell in his system so Adam didn't mind. After that Adam decided to learn windy spell which he later used in the Hogwarts express to drive out the black smoke caused by Ron's failed magic. Adam had many problems learning this spell as he had only read about it in a spellbook. It described this spell as a really powerful spell that can even be used to create cyclones, which made Adam curious.
After a few days of practise he finally learned it but with his strength, he could only create small jet of wind which was only strong enough to blow dust on the floor in the beginning. But he was not disappointed as he knew its strength will grow a lot in the future. Learning this windy spell also helped Adam to use hot air charm that he could use to dry his clothes or other things, which was also really helpful.

With the help of his system, Adam didn't have to worry about not being able to cast this spells successfully after his first use. And as for Hermione, with the help of wand and her hardwork she managed to keep up with Adam.

Afterwards Adam continued with his practise and learned water-making spell which was a lot harder compared to windy spell but with enough practise they still managed to conjure enough water to fill up a cup. After making water, he learned to make ice out of it with freezing spell.

Then he learned different fire spells which were not powerful enough to burn their room or leaky cauldron like Blue bell flames which were warm but not enough to burn someone, ignition spell that can be used to light up the target (mostly lamps or similar things) with small fireball, there was also a spell that can be used to set clothes on fire. After practising so many fire based spells, they also learned extinguishing spell to put out fires. During their practice of fire based spells, they had also tried to practise fire-making spell (Incedio) but it was really dangerous compared to other harmless fire based spells so they discontinued their practise of this spell.

Their practise was also quite dangerous sometimes but luckily it did not hurt them. But to deal with the effects of these failed magic they also learned general-counter spell that could counter or reverse the effects of the most of the charms, jinxes, hexes and also some curses. There was also occlumency but they still did not completely master it so it was still in their learning list.

Most of these spells were not that great in the duels as their body did not have strong magical power but these spells really helped them to control their magic proficiently.
Adam and Hermione discussed in the library and made list of spells that could be used for defense or offence. Adam did not care about them being difficult as he knew they could still learn them with the help of their wands, even if the effect of these spells will not be strong till their magic power grows up.
Their list included from harmless spells like tickling charm and body-binding charm to more aggressive spells like fire-making spell and blasting curse that Adam saw in one of the books. It even contained defensive spells like Protego.
Adam didn't care if they were unable to learn some of these spells right away as getting stronger was now his long-term goal. He wanted to get stronger quickly but he knew to get strong enough to handle all of the problems, he had to keep practising for a long time. Hardwork was the only option for him.

Hermione also decided to add some useful spells like the unlocking charm in their list as they didn't learn those spells because of lack of time during their practise. Occlumency's appearance had messed up their schedule so they had many spells that they were going to learn but couldn't learn during their practice.

After the dinner, they continued to discuss in the library till the time of night curfew as they were not in hurry to return to their dormitories.
During this time Harry and Ron discussed about the duel. Harry was not confident against Draco but he had to go now as it was Ron who had accepted this duel on his behalf. Ron was also feeling regretful but there was nothing they could do now.
"Maybe we should look for Adam and Hermione, they know about many spells. They might be able to help us." Harry spoke nervously, looking at the changes in Ron's facial expressions.

"No, no ,no..." Ron rejected Harry's proposal right away as he pulled Harry out of the common room. "We can handle it. We don't need their help. We can just beat Draco with our fists if we can't win with magic."

'With what magic and strength can we beat Draco and his two lackies.' Harry thought to himself. He wanted to say it but he didn't get the chance as they already left the common room. Harry knew they were going to get beaten up by Draco, Crabbe and Goyle so he was mentally preparing himself as he walked towards the courtyard.
Not many students knew about this duel and those who knew about it were not willing to break curfew and lose House points so there was no one waiting for them in the courtyard when they reached their destination.

"Where is Malfoy? He said he will be here for the duel at night after the curfew starts." Ron asked angrily as he noticed Draco was not waiting for them in this place.
"We didn't set duel at a specific time so we should wait. Maybe he will come after sometime. It's just 10:15PM anyway." Harry said as he walked to the corner and sat behind a pillar. Last thing he wanted today was to be caught by Filch or patrolling professors so he decided to hide for a while. Ron followed him and sat beside him.


"What are they doing? Aren't they here for the duel?" Hermione whispered as she saw them sit in the corner. She had noticed Harry and Ron leaving the common room when she was walking towards their common room from the library. She pulled Adam and decided to follow Harry and Ron as she guessed the reason behind them breaking the curfew.
"They are waiting for Draco. Let's wait here. I also have to meet Daphne at 11PM at the astronomy tower." Adam said as he sat down on the floor, away from Harry and Ron's eyes.

Hermione was nodding at Adam's words but when she heard about Adam meeting Daphne, she froze in place. She slowly turned her head towards Adam and asked in very small mosquito like voice, "Is it about the love letter?"
Adam was also surprised when Hermione mentioned this love letter. He looked at Hermione with puzzled look, "Love letter?" Adam knew what was she talking about but he was surprised that Hermione really thought what he told her was the truth. Seeing how Hermione nodded, Adam facepalmed himself and he explained with a grin on his face, "I was just joking with you. Did you really think she would give me a love letter? I maybe handsome but it's not easy to get a love letter."

Adam had a grin on his face but Hermione just stared dumbly at him when she heard these words. Suddenly Hermione had a strong desire to punch Adam's grinning face but she still controlled herself. She was worried about this thing for a while now but Adam was just joking with her. She felt angry but also a little bit happy. She was happy that her best friend wouldn't just start ignoring her after getting a girlfriend.
Hermione didn't say a word afterwards and just kept looking at the place where Harry and Ron were sitting. Adam could feel that he would get kicked or punched like always if he said anything right now so he wisely kept his mouth shut.

After half an hour, Adam decided to go to the astronomy tower to meet Daphne. He was worried about Filch so he felt like going there earlier would be better than being late to this meeting because of someone getting in his way. Draco still did not arrive so Adam let Hermione stay here for the duel. He was not that worried about Harry and Ron's safety but he felt like it would be better if he met alone with Daphne, instead of taking Hermione with him.

After walking for a while Adam finally arrived at the astronomy tower. Adam could see countless stars shining brightly in the dark night sky. It was really beautiful scene. Today was Adam's birthday but he didn't celebrate it so it was kind of a regular day for him.
Looking at this calm and beautiful night sky, he couldn't help but sigh as he thought about the previous birthdays he spent with his parents. His mother would always cook birthday cake at home, while his father would just decorate house in chaotic manner. Most of the time, George (Adam's father) would lock Adam up in his own room in the evening before starting with the decorations. In past couple of years, they even let Adam stay at their neighbour's house before his birthday so they could make a surprise for him with a peace of mind of not being seen by Adam.
Thinking about his neighbour, Adam couldn't help but the strange feeling that he always felt whenever he saw his neighbour. He always felt like he had seen his neighbour somewhere before but he could not remember it.
Adam's neighbour was a woman who looked as the same age as his mother (late twenties) with brown coloured hairs.She lived alone and appeared lonely everytime he saw her. But She did not keep this loneliness on her face as she always treated Adam very nicely with a beautiful pure smile. She always acted mysterious so Adam was also quite curious about her. Also Adam didn't know why but he always felt like he knew this woman. It was just that he couldn't remember who she was. This feeling had also led to his curiosity toward her to reach the new peak during past couple of years.

As Adam kept recalling his happy memories from previous birthdays, a slender silhouette appeared behind him which startled Adam when he heard the voice, "Atleast you didn't make me wait."

Adam immediately recognised this cold voice which made him relax. He replied, "How could I make you wait?..." Adam paused just to hear clicking sound of tongue that Daphne just made, he continued after making faint light with his wand, "...But why do you have to meet me so late? We could talk about this in the library or in an empty classroom."

Daphne's expression was still the same as that day when she gave him the letter. She looked annoyed, which was puzzling for Adam but he didn't ask why she was annoyed. Daphne spoke in cold tone, "I don't anyone else to know about this thing. What did you find during this time? Is there any clue? And why didn't you contact me?"

"What do you mean? Weren't you the one who's going to tell me about this trial? Your mother told me that she would send you with the information about this trial." Adam asked her back. But he still felt like he was tricked by Sophie. Looking at Daphne's face, he could tell that she didn't know anything about this trial. So it meant that Sophie initial goal was to make sure Adam search for this trial, even if he could not complete it.

"We have to look where the trial is before completing it. I got a clue about this trial from sorting hat. It said I can find what I look for in Ravenclaw house." said Daphne while avoiding eye contact with Adam. She didn't even know where trial was left by Rowena Ravenclaw so it was really shameless of her to ask Adam for anything in such rude tone.

"Then why didn't you join Ravenclaw house? I am sure sorting hat gave you the chance to join it. Is it because your family members are always in the Slytherin house?" Adam asked as he sat down at the edge of the tower leaving his legs dangling in the air. He could guess that she had no information about the trial so it was already boring for him to stay here instead of going to watch three-headed dog with the golden trio that he left alone in the courtyard.

"It said that I won't have enough strength to overcome this trial if I joined the Ravenclaw house so I chose Slytherin. And just to let you know, My mother was in Ravenclaw house." Daphne scoffed at Adam when she saw 'I don't care about anything' appearance that Adam was making. She explained things that sorting hat told her which really surprised Adam but it was still nothing compared to the surprises he had since he came in contact with this wizarding world.

"That's really surprising...But anyways, we don't have any information about this trial. So I think I must go now. I have more important things to do..." Adam just got up from the edge and was about to walk away, when Daphne suddenly interrupted his words with her shout.

"What Do You Mean By More Important Things To Do?!!! It's About my sister's future! And you have more important things to do than her?! You..." Adam quickly put his hand on her mouth to stop her from shouting. He wanted to curse but he controlled himself as it was just today that he had decided to control his out of control emotions.

"If you want professors or Filch to find us here, then you can continue to shout. Both of us know nothing about this trial yet so it doesn't matter if we sit here all night and discuss about it. So let's try to find some clues before we discuss these things. Do you understand?" Adam brought his face closer to her face and whispered in serious tone. Daphne was scared by Adam's sudden approach but she still listened to every word he said. Adam retracted his hand from her mouth after he saw her nod her head.

Adam waited for a while before starting to walk away. He heard Daphne's voice from behind. It was not as arrogant and angry as before, "I am sorry for shouting. Thank you for helping me. I was just nervous." She paused for a moment before continuing, "I thought you knew some clues but you didn't tell me so I was angry. I saw Ms.Grey looking at you many times so I thought you were in contact with her about this trial. Do you really not have any clues?"

Adam stopped in his tracks as he thought who this Ms.Grey was, then he remembered Helena, the ghost of Ravenclaw house. He wondered why Helena Ravenclaw was looking at him. He had noticed this too but he had initially ignored it, thinking that it was his misunderstanding but now hearing Daphne say this, he knew that it was not just his misunderstanding.
"Did she? It maybe because I am good mannered and handsome so she looked at me. I don't know about her thoughts but I will definitely tell you about the clues if I find them so don't worry about it. Just get stronger since sorting hat hinted you about it." Adam said as he walked to the stairs. Daphne clicked her tongue in annoyance when she heard Adam praising himself but she still followed behind him. But after walking just a few steps, she bumped into him as Adam suddenly stopped when he reached the stairs. She was confused so she looked in front Adam where she finally noticed someone hiding there trying to hear their conversation.

Adam saw three Gryffindors hiding in the corner. Adam didn't know when they had arrived here but it looked like they didn't hear anything clearly so he felt relieved. He didn't mind if Hermione knew about it but he didn't want these things to be known by Harry and Ron.
Harry-Hermione-Ron were startled by Adam's appearance. Adam just looked at them without saying anything which made them flustered. Hermione was not that panicked but she still felt embarrassed about trying to listen to Adam and Daphne's conversation. She spoke when she noticed Adam's gaze rest on her, "Draco got caught by Filch and Snape so he probably told them about Harry and Ron waiting for him in the courtyard. We quickly ran when we saw Filch's cat. I thought of informing you so... I came here to warn you about Filch."

Hermione voice got smaller as she was feeling embarassed to tell these things to Adam. She just wanted to warn Adam but she just hid and tried to spy on their conversation when she arrived here.

Adam couldn't get angry when he saw embarrassed look on Hermione's face and also panicked Harry and Ron who stood silently behind Hermione. Daphne was angry when she thought of them listening to this important conversation but before she could say anything Adam turned his head towards her and whispered, "I really don't want to get caught by Filch so let's leave this place first."

No one waited for her reply and quickly walked down the stairs. Daphne could only follow behind them. They walked together for a while before Daphne separated to go toward the Slytherin common room which was in the dungeon. She walked alone towards the dungeons but just when she was about to reach the corner of the corridor, she heard Filch's voice,
"Sniff around, my sweet, they might be lurking in a corner."

Daphne was frightened by this voice. She immediately changed her direction and ran back towards Adam's direction. She quickly caught up to them but she did not stop. She just said few words before running past them, "Flich, he is coming."

"Meooowww!!!" Hearing this Mrs.Norris's call, everyone started to follow behind Daphne. Adam laughed in his heart as he saw how they were heading towards his destination. He was not worried about getting hurt by this three-headed dog as he could just use fire or smokescreen spell to run away if it attacked him so all he cared about right now was to go and see this big boy.
During their reckless run, they missed a staircase that lead to their common room and arrived at the right side of the third floor corridor. They entered through the door but had to keep running when they heard Mrs.Norris's making sound behind them. It was a really dark and creepy place, filled with many weird statues covered in spider webs which added in more points to the scary factor of this place.

As Adam had guessed they soon arrived at the door that led to the trial created by Dumbledore with the help of professors. Adam could not help but give thumbs up to Dumbledore when he thought how clever Dumbledore was to choose this part of the castle for the trial. All Gryffindor students must go from this part of the stairs and even if they make a single mistake when changing stairs, they will be lead to this corridor and if someone courageous like Gryffindor comes here, they would surely look inside this place. So it was easy to guess that Harry would stumble in this room in a way or another.

Ron tried to open door but he couldn't even budge it, "It's over. This door is locked."
At this moment Adam finally recalled an important detail he had forgotten about. It Hermione who had used unlocking charm to open this door in the original story but because of their exploration, Hermione and he still did not learn unlocking charm in this world. Adam felt deep regret for stopping Hermione from going to the library for the past week.

Just when he thought that this chance to see three-headed dog was gone, he heard a cold voice. It was Daphne who had just stepped forward, "Stand aside... Alohomora." With a small clincking sound door was opened by her. Adam was really excited when he saw this. He could not help but whisper excitedly, "Daphne, you are the best." Daphne looked annoyed but she did not say anything and looked away from Adam.

Adam quickly walked inside the room, followed by Harry, Ron , Daphne and finally Hermione. She was thinking about something when she entered this place. She looked at Adam and whispered in a very small voice but everyone else could clearly hear it in this room, "We are on the right side of the third floor. This place is forbidden. There might be danger in this place."

"Only danger here is Filch so don't try to scare us. We are not scared by your words." Ron said when he heard Hermione's words. He was already frightened when he saw spider webs so he didn't want any more danger appearing in this place.

Adam knew that there was definitely a danger here in this room so he was excitedly looking behind Ron at the middle of this room. He could see dark silhouette of the three-headed dog but it was still very dark so he couldn't see how it looked. He took out his wand to be ready to cast the spell as he saw silhouette moving a bit by bit towards them. It didn't take long before three-headed dog stretched out one of his heads above Ron. Ron was clueless about it but Adam was already ready to cast fire based spells. It was not strong enough to hurt this dog but it was still enough to make it startle in this small room. Hermione had also noticed this dog and she was also scared but she also saw Adam take out his wand so she took out her wand as well. She was also ready to cast spells if that thing attacked them.

Adam could now clearly see the face of this three-headed dog which finally let him know that this dog looked really fierce and cruel compared to the cute appearance shown in the movie. He felt a bit regret coming here tonight but he didn't care much about it as he knew, as long as Harry was here, Dumbledore would not let anyone get seriously hurt or die in this room. He was also confident to run away from this place so he whispered in calm voice, "Daphne, slowly, step by step, walk towards me without making any sound. Don't look behind you."

Daphne didn't know why but she just followed Adam's words and walked slowly behind Adam then turned over to look at Ron and Harry who stood there. Adam instructed Harry to do the same which he followed without any hesitation. Harry turned around and looked at Ron who was now standing under the three heads of a big dog. It looked like it would attack anytime, which made Harry widen his eyes in fear.
Ron who saw Harry's reaction was frightened. He slowly turned around to see what was behind hm but when he saw it, he screamed in fear and ran towards Adam and others.
Adam didn't care about controlling his image as he used few bad words at Ron before casting bluebells flames which were not that hot but were bright enough to startle the big dog. Hermione followed Adam's action and cast the same spell. Big dog was barking at them but it did not jump forward as they were not trying to approach it. Taking this moment of hesitation as an opportunity, everyone ran outside the room. Big three-headed dog also followed behind them after the disappearance of the flames but it was already too late as they had exited the room.

Everyone was scared by the appearance of this big dog. Adam could also feel his heart beat like drums. He could not help but think of defeating this three-headed dog to add in the new adventure in his big diary. He knew it was his wishful thinking as even Quirrell could not defeat it and had to find ways to get past it. Quirrell was quite weak because of Voldemort residing on his body but he was still stronger than Adam so it was nearly impossible for Adam to beat this three-headed dog, atleast for now.

Everyone ran back to their common rooms without taking a single stop. Daphne thought maybe it could be the trial left behind by Rowena Ravenclaw so she wanted to talk to Adam but it was not the time to talk about this thing right now. So she decided to wait for the morning breakfast to talk with Adam.

As for the Adam and others had already arrived in the Gryffindor common room. Hermione was angry as she thought that it was Harry and Ron's fault that they had to be in danger today. She might've just returned to the common room if not for witnessing Harry and Ron sneak out of the common room. She said few words to Adam before storming out of the common room into the girls dormitory. Adam, Harry and Ron looked at each other for a few seconds but they did not have any idea what to say so all they could do was to return to their room. Even Harry and Ron were silent after they came to their room. They just slumped on their bed and quickly fell asleep in a few minutes.
