Chapter 2 - Chapter One

Life in Chingola is boring. Nothing interesting ever happens. Or is the time just not right?

The alarm goes off and a ringing is heard in the distance. Cars are singing birds are tweeting and this no eventful day. Reaching to open the window, Nicolas Cruz, find the blinding rays reach for spears to stab him in the eyes. The pain is no longer bearable, he decides to get up.

He walks on to the door of his room with the speed of an insect. The room is of a sea, whales on wall, diving masks on the left wallpaper. He gets to the bathroom and sends his skin on a suds roller coaster. Once done freshening up he prepares for work and gets on his way. He leaves house full of boredom. " Isn't there anything worth the excitement?" he pondered.

Nicolas is a sales intern at the Chingola Institute Of Science. He has a desk and a good pay. What the company is all about he doesn't know. This man has weird ears, a cute button nose and a dark complexion.

Walking into the building, he is meet by the greetings of the front receptionist, Chisela Chakani. " I'm fine thank you, how is you husband?" Nicolas asked, " He is fine, Nick, much better than yours!" she retorted gleefully. She asked him if he was going to he office or he would first want to see the new project the company is wising to propitiate.

" All this company does is make unnecessary scientific statements that are useless, how can there be any interesting thing they are doing?" Nick remarked. " Well I challenge you to look at the newspaper headline" Chisela countered. Nick went to say that there was no point wasting his time looking, he would just be disappointed further at the poor project. Yet his curiosity was aroused.

He walked into hiss office. A small room with a desktop computer that is as old as him standing right in front him as he approached the desk. A corner red lamp that radiates blue light, brown floor and a fast cold air blowing air conditioner. He sets himself down to start making the plans for his next sales meeting presentation with the thought of the company project still fresh on his mind. As he is typing, the image of his in the distant past asserts itself on him. " If you can't even design, there is no point in you being an engineer. Clean your desk and join the sales department" his boss' voice echoed to him. This was just two months ago. His boss, Mr. Rahul Patel, is a hard man that does not fire employees but just degrades them. In this incident Nick had failed to design the solar wind spacecraft. In todays presentation, he was to make sure he gave a good sales report of he would be de graded, again.

He finished his work and went to meet his boss. He barely started to present when Mr. Patel interrupted, " Do you know what we are doing here tomorrow? Don't bother making that presentation all I want a risk takers and lovers of science, leave! "

Confused at what had just happened, is mind returned the image of the newspaper. He dashed for the front office and asked the receptionist for the paper. She gave it to him and read. " Human volunteers for brain enhancement."

" Wow," he remarked, " this is exciting! " " I told you it would be exciting" she retorted.

He went to his office pondering this new light that dawned. As he worked the thought never left his mind. Filled with fuel he dashed to the registration office and signed himself in.

This was the most interesting thing to ever happen to him.

He got home and there was much excitement in him that he called to tell his mother about this new development. She was atomic bomb to his Japan village. She refused him to try anything of that manner.

On the far west part of Chingola is woman named Natasha Siwale. She is a high school teacher and loves the human brain. She is a tall, light, beautiful young woman. Her day so far was going great. She had woken this morning full of strength, had a good work out, found no line at the coffee shop and had the best hair day. She had put on a yellow dress with a white belt. Her long hair rich as basalt rock and flowing like a Zambezi river.

She to the school and started her usual routine. This was greet the teachers in the staffroom, go to her class and tell a joke, take the register and finally go to her class for that period to teach. She had finished teaching her classes for the day and decided to head to the teacher's lounge. She got there and found Mr. Mwima reading an article in the newspaper with extreme concentration and enjoyment. " Top of the morning to you, how do you do? " she saluted, " Remarkable! " he announced. She asked him what he was reading. He told her that it was an article on the Chingola Institute Of Science's project. He explained to her that the company has developed a microchip that would enable anyone to gain control over technology. She was intrigued!

School was over and headed home. On the way, she came across a poster advertising exactly what her colleague had explained to her. She took keen interest and read the text. To her astonishment, human volunteers where needed and sign ups were due in only two hours. She quickly got home and dropped her bags and went for the registration.

Mushota Banda, an agriculturist was about business on the farm when he heard that his potatoes were needed in town. In the Kapisha Farms did he live. He was alone and very prosperous. He reared goats, sheep, cattle, pigs and chickens. His farm was the largest. An elderly man of 79 years, widowed and no children all with great affluence was a humble soul.

One uneventful day he awoke and just felt joy. He got out of bed, took a bath and headed for his field to supervise the work. On him had dark blue jeans and long sleeved red shirt . The workmen had already started work and were almost through. " Why are you guys rushing through your work? " he asked, " In order to have enough time to sign up for the science venture." They replied. Mushota asked them what the adventure was all about. They had hardly completed their first word when a messenger girl came calling his name. " Mushota! Mushota! " she called, " Yes, what is it? " he replied. The girl explained to him that that the towns people want him to deliver to them 90kg of his potatoes this afternoon. He then remembered the good feeling he awoke with and acknowledged it.

Turning to the workers he told to go to where ever they wanted when they completed the work. He saddled his horse and attached a wagon to it and placed 100kg of potatoes. He went into town and made his business the productive. He met with all the clients and sold to them. They praised his wonderful potatoes.

After having sold all the potatoes he went to a local pub. Once inside he ordered a drink, Fanta, orange flavored. He enjoyed the cool beverage. As he sat there he saw a newspaper to the left him and decided to read it. The first page contained the headline "Human volunteers for brain enhancement. " intrigued he read on. " This is foolishness, who would want to go this? " he muttered.

He left the pub and headed home.
