Chapter 5
When we love someone we have to go to great lengths to help both of us survive.
"HAZEL!! HAZEL WAKE UP COME ON PLEASE!" I screamed but there was no reply.
I started doing the first thing that came to my mind, CPR.
I constantly did it but I still found no pulse. I knew what I had to do. I kept trying various things to help bring back a heartbeat but there were no results. I kept trying to remember my childhood seeing mom doing operations and stitching and I could feel pieces sticking together like a jigsaw. I brought out a bag that contained lots of medical equipment and got to work. It was a blur of taking out the bullet, lots and lots of blood and careful stitching the wound with a needle.
When I was done I put the contents away and carried Hazel to a nearby cabin that was abandoned. I got some things working and then started collecting wood for a fire. When I came back, Hazel was still unconscious.
I cleaned the house up a bit and laid Hazel on a couch by the fire. I had hoped I'd done enough. I locked the door and shut all the windows of the house to make it look isolated from the outside. I began talking to Hazel as if she were a patient in a coma.
"Hazel I hope you hear this. I was always so afraid to show my emotions because I was always left unprotected when I did. But when I saw you it was like you ignited a fire inside of me. I wasn't scared, I felt unstoppable. I wish that I asked you to dance that night. Every time we're in the classroom together time stops and all I do is just be mesmerized by you. Hazel, I love you and I always will" I explained. I gently kissed Hazel's forehead.
"You should've told me soon dumbass," Hazel replied.
I gazed at her and noticed that her eyes started opening. I blushed a little understanding that she just heard everything. But for some reason, I didn't care anymore. If I didn't express my emotions they would keep building up until they would explode. I looked at Hazel who was still trying to handle what just happened. I told her everything that had happened.
"Jamie! Wow, I know that must have been hard for you but because of you I'm alive right now so thanks,"' she announced. I felt a sudden strip of proudness. I was about to respond when-
"WHERE ARE YOU LITTLE DOGS?!" Alex screamed.
I jumped in fright from the floor and stood up straight. Alex was close by! I needed to keep him finding us.
I searched the house for anything that could help us and thank the Lord for what I found.
In the kitchen below the carpet was a hatch leading down in a little room that could be locked.
I helped Hazel stand up and took her down the hatch. Pasteurised any evidence of our presence from the house, took the bags with me down the hatch and hid them from sight. I locked the door and went down with Hazel. She sat on the floor shivering silently. I took out a blanket and wrapped it around her. She gave me a thank you smile. I nodded and together we shivered silently hoping we were not going to get caught.
