"That could have gone better, but it could have gone worse." I told myself quietly. "But regardless, it is time to go home."
I start walking down the street. I think about how the night unfolded. I know in my gut that there is no way I will ever get a job at The Red Goblet. I felt sad. I had wanted that. But at the same time, knowing what I know now, I was sure that I would never have been happy there with the type of management they had.
The wind blew. It was getting gustier, and I was already cold. I wrapped my bare arms around my torso. I had to get different clothes, and fast.
Shivering, I ran across the street and continued down a street going southward. Unfortunately for me, the buildings were now no longer giving me shelter. I was in a wind tunnel.
"This wind is just evil." I said to myself, as I switched from jogging pace to running as fast as I could. But, five minutes later, I reached the darkened, abandoned alley I was looking for.
As soon as I stepped into the alley, I was glad for the warmth that I got back as the old brick walls kept the wind out. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and used my powers to reach out through the entire length of the alley. I searched for life forces. I wanted to know if anyone else was in the alley besides me.
In less than one minute, I had my answer. There was only a cat. I smiled. Now that I knew the chances of anyone seeing me naked in the slim chance that my spell backfired was slim to none, I used my magic to change my outfit for the second time that night.
The warmth was heavenly. I wore black jeans and my dark blue tank top was barely visible under the teal sweater.
Now that I was changed, I walked further down the alley, until the cat came into view. I stopped walking.
"Hello" I greeted the cat. She turned her head to look at me. We looked into each others eyes. I did the slow blink. The slow blink is a friendly way to greet a cat. It tells them that you trust them. She did the slow blink back at me.
"Come here, pretty girl." I said softly. When I smiled at her my whole face lit up with happiness. "I could really use your help."
The cat sauntered over and rubbed her body on my legs. I lowered myself into a squat, with my behind nearly taking a seat on my heels. I held my right hand out to the cat, palm up, so she could catch my scent.
But she barely even gave me a sniff, as she broke protocol and jumped at me, launching herself at my right shoulder. I instinctively grabbed for her as soon as I realized her intention. But it still wasn't enough. I ended up lying on my back on the alley floor with a cat on my chest.
" I love you very much. You are a good girl." I told her. Still holding her in my arms I sat up. "Did he send you to check on me?" I asked the cat as I stood up, still cradling her to my chest.
The purring was an affirmative. I rubbed the top of the cats' head. I looked into her eyes and she looked into mine.
"He still worries about me doesn't he?" I sigh. Even though the cat knew that I knew the answer, she still did the slow blink and nodded her head yes.
"Will you help me with a reversal spell before you go?"I asked the cat. Again, the same slow blink and nod of her head yes, was my answer.
"Thank you" I said in a grateful tone. We both closed our eyes and got to work. I am not very good at reversal spells. Anyone can cast a spell, but undoing your own spell is another level of magic completely. It is much harder.
The cat and I complete the spell in five minutes, a feat that would have taken me at least twenty minutes on my own. Now all the magic I did earlier at The Red Goblet has been undone. The lights and music will be back to normal and the vampire bouncers unfrozen.
"Thank you again." I say to the cat. "You will always keep him safe, right?" I ask with tears in my eyes.
I could tell the thought of someone hurting him made her downright murderous. The cats' eyes turned red and an evil wide grin appeared on her face. The giant grin was one that would be biologically impossible on a regular cat, and this grin exposed row after row of gleaming sharp white teeth.
I smiled at her. "Goodbye Luna: The Moonlight Slaughterer."
The cat did a slow blink in farewell. Then, with a sound like a champagne bottle being uncorked, the cat vanished.
I love Cheshire cats; they are very cool creatures. But I am always very cautious around them. They go from zero to a thousand at the drop of a hat.
As a whole, they make for a loyal ally, but are well known for being quick to anger, easily insulted, tricksters, and moody. I always showed any Cheshire cat every formality.
I have respect not only for the damage they can inflict when they physically attack, but also for the very strong and ancient power they have the ability to wield. The very source of the Cheshire cats' magic is still unknown.
After I bring myself back from being lost in thought about Cheshire cats, I get out my cell phone and scroll through my contacts list. I find the number I am looking for and press the green "call" icon. It rings twice and on the third ring, the phone is answered.
