Chapter 2 - The Debutant: Bowen

"Boss, it's clear that Leicester's press is causing us significant trouble," Kai responded, his voice steady but laced with enthusiasm. "We need to find ways to bypass their aggressive approach. Their wing-backs are pushing up high, leaving space behind. We can exploit that with quick and incisive passes into the channels. Our midfielders can make diagonal runs to receive the ball, creating overloads and stretching their defense."

Kai answered eagerly whilst eyeing a particular Leicester city defender.

"Especially the innocent Ben Chilwell! We need pace down the wing!"

Pellegrini listened intently, his eyes fixed on Kai, soaking in every word. He nodded, his face displaying a glimmer of renewed hope.

"Good observation, Kai," Pellegrini acknowledged, a flicker of a smile emerging on his face. "Let's make that adjustment. I want us to be more direct, precise, and purposeful in our passing. Let's exploit the spaces behind their wing-backs and force them to retreat. And remember, we need everyone to stay composed and focused. We can turn this around."

With a newfound determination, Pellegrini turned back towards the field as he screamed and yelled to the players. Against the backdrop of the howling London Stadium. Pellegrini knew that Kai's insights had the potential to make a difference, to give his team the edge they needed to fight back and secure a crucial result.

As the play continued, Pellegrini's focus intensified. He rallied his players, reminding them of their abilities and the importance of executing the adjusted strategy. His conversation with Kai had injected a renewed energy into Pellegrini and his hope for victory. The manager faced the pitch with a burning desire to turn the tide and defy the odds.

With Pellegrini and Kai working in tandem, armed with a newfound plan, West Ham embarked on the second half, determined to show resilience, overcome their struggles, and seize control of their own destiny.

On the pitch.

West Ham team found themselves struggling to maintain control of possession. The opposition applied relentless pressure, making it difficult for West Ham to string together meaningful passes and establish a foothold in the game.

Amidst this challenging situation, the experienced and influential midfielder Mark Noble stepped up, taking charge of the midfield. With a composed demeanor, he surveyed the field, recognizing the need to change the flow of the game and unlock West Ham's attacking potential.

Noble, known for his vision and precise passing ability, saw an opportunity to shift the momentum. As he received the ball in a congested central area, he quickly assessed the situation. Sensing an opening on the right-wing, he unleashed a perfectly weighted diagonal pass, arcing gracefully through the air.

Andriy Yarmolenko, ever-alert and ready to pounce, anticipated Noble's pass. With a burst of acceleration, he surged forward, sprinting towards the right-wing, leaving his marker trailing behind. The crowd held its breath, sensing a moment of promise as Yarmolenko darted into space.

As the ball descended towards him, Yarmolenko gracefully controlled it with his chest, instantly bringing it under his command. With an unwavering focus, he swiftly shifted gears, moving into attack mode. The crowd erupted in anticipation, knowing the potential impact of this moment.

But it wasn't going to be so easy. Leicester City's Ben Chilwel, eager to prove himself, responded with a commendable display of resilience and tenacity. Despite facing a seasoned opponent, he refused to back down and threw himself into every challenge, determined to contain Yarmolenko's threat. The clash between the two players became a captivating subplot within the broader context of the match.

Yarmolenko attempted to outsmart Chilwell, utilizing feints, step-overs, and sudden changes of direction to create space for himself. He unleashed his blistering pace, attempting to burst past the young defender and deliver dangerous crosses into the box.

But before the young and energetic Chilwell, no amount of technical ability can fool the left-back as he kept the old Ukrainian winger contained. Yarmolenko was nothing more than a old man on his last legs when facing Chilwell.

Yarmolenko gritted his teeth as he deftly adjusted his direction, attempting to off-balance his defender before charging into the box. However, all the winger received was a brutal tackle as he was harshly pushed off the ball. Ben Chilwell delivered a hard, but fair tackle to win the ball back.

The crowd sighed in disappointment. Some enthusiastic West Ham fans can only clap for Yarmolenko's valiant efforts.

Manuel Pellegrini's frustration grew as Yarmolenko struggled to break free from Chilwell's tight marking. Sensing the need for a change, he turned to his coaching staff for suggestions on how to alter the course of the game.

"Marko Arnautović," Pellegrini declared, his voice tinged with a touch of urgency. "We need a fresh injection of energy on our wing. Your strength and power will give us an advantage."

However, before Pellegrini could finalize his decision, Kai, the young coaching staff on the West Ham team with an astute eye for the game, stepped forward with a different proposition.

"Boss, I understand the thought behind bringing Arnautović on, but what if we consider Jarrod Bowen instead?" Kai proposed, his voice filled with conviction. "Chilwell is a talented defender, but he hasn't faced the blistering pace and directness that Bowen brings to the table. Bowen would catch Chilwell off guard with his quick bursts of acceleration and incisive runs."

Pellegrini turned his attention to Kai, his interest piqued. The suggestion intrigued him, offering a different perspective that hadn't crossed his mind.

"Tell me more, Kai," Pellegrini encouraged, his tone eager to hear the reasoning behind this unexpected suggestion.

"Jarrod Bowen is young and hungry," Kai explained, his voice growing more animated. "He has the hunger to prove himself on this stage. With his speed and directness, he can stretch the defense and create space for himself and others. It's a gamble, but it could catch Chilwell off guard and disrupt Leicester's defensive structure."

It wasn't really a gamble. Even though Bowen barely played for West Ham this season, Kai had absolute confidence in the young Englishmen as he know what he could do. As a person from the future, he was confident in his assessment in Jarrod Bowen's ability.

Pellegrini considered Kai's words carefully, his mind weighing the potential risks and rewards of this daring move. He contemplated the prospect of injecting youthful vigor into the game, relying on the unknown and untested.

Finally, a smile crept onto Pellegrini's face, a glimmer of hope and determination in his eyes. The old manager eyed the bubbly Asian coach. Kai is a man who had worked his way up as an unknown youth team coach in West Ham to becoming his current assistant manager.

"Kai, I trust your judgment," Pellegrini declared, his voice resolute. "Let's give Jarrod Bowen a chance to make his mark. In this battle against relegation, we need boldness and a willingness to embrace the unexpected."

Pellegrini eyed the nimble Bowen that was sitting on the bench, who was unaware of their conversation.

"Bowen. Get ready. You're going on."

Bowen's eyes widened in disbelief. He felt a mix of excitement and nerves rush through him. This was his chance, a dream come true, but also a daunting task. He had to step onto the field and make an impact immediately, with the weight of the team's hopes and the manager's trust resting on his shoulders.

As he rose from the bench and began his warm-up routine, the adrenaline coursed through his veins. He could hear the crowd's loud discontent, their voices a constant reminder of the magnitude of the moment.

As the team prepared for the substitution, Pellegrini's decision reverberated through the dugout. Some players exchanged quizzical glances, unsure of what to expect from the young Englishman. Yet, a sense of anticipation hung in the air, a collective belief that this unexpected change could be the catalyst they desperately needed.

Jarrod Bowen, the young talent eager to prove himself, felt a surge of adrenaline course through his veins. He tightened his boots, visualizing the challenge that lay ahead. This was his opportunity to make a name for himself, to step up when it mattered most.

The sound of the whistle signalled the substitution, and as Bowen stepped onto the field, a roar erupted from the West Ham faithful. The young winger embraced the weight of their expectations, his mind focused on the task at hand.

"And here we have a remarkable turn of events, ladies and gentlemen," the commentator exclaimed, his voice filled with a mix of surprise and excitement. "Jarrod Bowen, a young talented winger purchased from Hull City last year, is making his long-awaited debut for West Ham in this crucial match against Leicester City."

But the commentator had a questionable expression as he watched the substitute getting on the pitch. "Is this really the time to choose someone unproven? When the stakes are so high?"
