Chapter 19 - Backline? Why?

[.....]

'....'

[ guess ill have to display them under your main stat menu. although i cant really blame you forgetting after all that has happened. but I would've hoped you would have a little better memory than this. I've updated your menu, you can check it later but right now don't you have better matters too attend too?]

'huh?'

I looked past the floating text to see everyone to the left of me packing up their weapons as the instructors exited the field. I quickly looked around for my two weapons and ran to catch up to them as everyone left. Entering the door after the large group of people i saw a couple of large carriages waiting to take us out of town. The instructor pointed to each of the 4 carts as he went through the line of people, most people were sent to the 1st cart. which i assumed was for the frontline. everyone going on that cart was well built and big.

The Instructor eventually stopped at me and pointed to cart two, which was the backline. I was confused at first, wasn't I a hand to hand combat specialist? why would he send me to the backlines of all things? even the mage group would make more sense.

i ignored the questions popping around in my head as i walked towards the cart, around 20 people were in this one cart and it was starting to get a little cramped. I couldn't imagine what the frontline was like. A few other guys were in the group with me, which consisted of 22 people. They looked at me in surprise, apparently I was right to question their decision. But looking around the carriage i saw Sam sitting in the front, asleep.

"hello, my name is Li, Li Ming." a brown fox beastkin told me sticking his hand out towards me.

"Akio, Akio Sano. nice too meet you" I responded taking his hand

"I didn't expect you to be put in the backlines, I thought you would be put in the mage group. But i guess it makes a little bit of sense." he replied.

"Assassins and ranged fighters are put in here, because well.. a bow is used in the backline. But assassins are put here because they cant do much on the frontline, they are used to wrap around. OH, sorry I'm nerding out a little." Scratching his chin he laughed.

i guess that makes more sense then, I move well with a dagger and im a lot faster than most of the people here.

"not at all, in fact you helped me clear out why I'm here in the first place. But i wonder where they are taking us exactly."

"well the frontline is going out to fight some monsters that have been growing more rampant, the easier ones of course. to build some teamwork, we are heading to another training facility where we will work out who's a bowman and who's an assassin. No idea where the mage group is heading." He shrugged as the carriage shook.

"huh, I wonder how they will decide that." I responded.

the conversation dried out so he introduced himself to a couple of others while i opened my system back up

[I'm finished with the changes, hopefully you actually use them this time around.]

looking at the current options displayed in front of him. Akio smirked.

'Thank you system, I wonder how you're able to give me my own personal shop.'

[I didn't, everyone has a shop. Yours just has some extra items that can be purchased. None of these are world shattering, I know. I made it that way so you don't go blow up the empire for you small plot of pity revenge]

'PITY REVENGE? I DONT EVEN KNOW IF MY PARENTS ARE ALIVE!' Screaming would've been an understatement. I bit my tongue at the response of the deep voice to prevent my self from actually saying it out loud.

[hmmm, I suppose I went a little too far. my apologies.]

'danm right you did.' I took a look at the dagger, the bleeding effect has already saved my life once. imagine if I could increase that effect, wouldn't it be easy? I tapped on the floating hologram and tried to buy it.

I let out a sigh, of course it wouldn't be that easy. I ruffled my hair and ears. i took a look at the screen for a long minute, wasn't I going to train for the backline? Maybe i should pick up the bow as a second means of combat. I clicked on the bow, its blue handle gave of a melodic feeling as icy blue patterns were encrypted on it. Not in a very noble way but a ferocious way, like a painter got mad and threw paint on it while running in circles.

after thinking some more I clicked confirm and I felt the bow being warped into my storage space. Looking around it seems like things were about to wrap up as everyone started to organize their items once again. I didn't unpack anything so I was just fine. I felt the carriage stop and a voice boomed from the back of the carriage.

"Hurry on out, you don't want to get her mad on the first day." a nervous guard looks at us apologetically. i hoped out quickly, if the man i interviewed with was only an instructors boss i don't want to imagine a division leader. i swallowed hard as i ran to where a nearby guard pointed and stood in line.

'they must really like lines, or organization.' i commented as everyone else lined up. The sound of loud footsteps could be heard as a woman with an ice cold gaze walked towards us. her blonde hair dropped to her waist as she looked at the new arrivals.

"Dude, look at that bust." a man snorted at the end of the line. earning the giggle of agreement from another.

I looked at the lady once more and i had to agree, might have been the biggest assets if seen in a long while. but I made no facial movement at the sight of them. her uniform was a sleek mellow grey button up and leggings with boots. it looked more like a casual outfit compared to our armored up chests and legs.

Her face turned even colder, which i previously thought to be impossible at the comment made. her expressionless gaze stabbed the two men in the middle of the line.

"state your names, now" she told them with a voice that had immense pressure booming out of it. she wasn't even looking at me and i could feel the snake like coldness of it twirl around my neck, waiting to collapse my only airway. it took all of my willpower to not react to the pressure being applied.

"D-Devon, my name is Devon Ma'am" the clattering of iron clashing between his legs almost covered up his meek voice.

"Henry, Ma'am." the other man replied straightforwardly but with all his effort, he was frozen still. also terrified.

The lady turned to a set of two guards behind her. and gave a short nod. as she beckons all of us aware towards two large doors on yet another grand building. opening them we found a large meeting room complete with couches and chairs.

"take a seat" she said as she walked to the front of the room. i chose a single chair in the middle of the room, which had armrests.

'these are nice' I said as I sat down and look around. Henry and Devon weren't there, without my surprise I turned at the sound of her voice.

"My name is Fuyoko. I will be your Instructor for the next month." The pressure once again was applied to anyone in the room.

Showing no change in my face she focuses her gaze on me.

"Now, I'm not much of a sit around and train on dummies kind of gal, so I want you all to go out and kill a 2nd phase monster with only a bow, then a second grade monster with a dagger. Of course you may go higher if you want." She smiled

"No help from anyone. No magic, No enhancements. if I find that you did i will fire you and send a letter to the school preventing entrance. am I clear?" she paused looking around.

Dead silence rang throughout the room.

"good, you have 3 hours" she clapped her hands and sat down.
