Chapter 2 - Are You Scared?

Everyone in the room, except for myself who didn't even bother to look, was staring at the dragon heart.

It was silent for a moment, until the man who had been acting tough a moment ago, asked in a weak voice, despite already knowing the answer, "where did you get it, how do we know it's real? You could be lying to us. After all, a dragon heart is hard to obtain."

"It was my son's", She said, not a flicker of emotion crosses her face, "I dug it out with my own hands," she assures.

The whole room went quiet for a moment. I notice my tears have stopped by now. I guess I don't really care enough to keep crying.

I raise my head and look at the group of tough looking men standing in our doorway.

I notice that two of them are shaking slightly. Is it because she had just openly admitted to killing her son? The man in the front doesn't shake, at least, but you can still see the fear in his eyes.

The other 3 just looked stunned. Like they didn't know how to feel.

The most interesting expression would be the man who had been leaning against the door frame. Who had asked me that question. I decided to ask it back.

"Are you scared?" I say. "I watched her do it."

"She plunged her hands into his chest, laughing madly. She held her glass up to his chest and let it fill with blood before drinking down glass after glass. I've never seen her happier. And in the morning, she picked up his body, laid him down on that kitchen table you can still see here today, gouging out his eyes, pulling off his nails and hacking at his head with an axe to get his horns."

So, I asked him again, "are you scared?"

He looks at me for a moment, stares right into my gaze as if trying to see how I really feel inside.

He could just ask, but I have no idea what I would tell him. I was sad, but only for a moment, when I knew mother would not suffer with me. But after that, I felt nothing. You see... I don't really care what happens anymore.

"No," he says, "are you?"

"I used to be," I say, "but not anymore."

"Well then, I guess that we shall have to teach you how to feel scared again." He says, a wicked smile on his face. "But first... knock them both out."

Mother looks surprised. I am as well. I didn't expect them to move so fast. I wonder what mother will do now. Will she run? Will she scream? Will he claw at them and screech curses as she would do to me whenever I tried to run away. I don't do that anymore, though. I learned long ago that there was no escape.

I have no doubt in my mind that mother will get what she wants.

She always does.

If she fights, she will win.

I have been taught that mother is what is to be feared the most. And I have no reason to believe otherwise.

I watch as she sets the lid back onto the container calmly before carefully snapping it shut and setting it on the table.

"I would advise you to not do that, boys. Although I look fragile, I assure you that I am quite the opposite."

They acted as if they couldn't hear her as they dashed forth with no hesitation, ready to club her to death with those meaty hands of theirs.

My eyes don't change when I see my mother open her mouth as blood flows from her throat and begins to float in the air in front of her.

The men paused for a moment. I guess they know why her mouth is so red, now.

The blood swirls for a moment, before turning into 5 blades that hover around her. She grabs 2 out of the air, one for each hand, and dashes at the men of her own initiative.

She swings one at a man's throat, ready to take his life without hesitation, when a hand seemingly appears out of nowhere, stopping her before she could do any damage.

"A vampire, just as I thought." He said.

Mother looks stunned for a moment, before snarling, saying "and who do you think you are, stopping me like this? If you knew I was a vampire, are you sure you should fight?"

"Hello, Princess Vivian. I am Lawrence, I have been sent here by the dragon king."

Mother had a stunned look on her face. It is only now that I realized I never knew her name. Father would just always call her 'Honey' or 'darling' and Alex and I were to always call her mother.

"Don't call me that. I am no longer the lady Vivian you speak of, can't you see?"

"I am well aware. You are nothing but a runaway vampire, undeserving of your title, but I have been instructed to keep it as such, so please bear with me for now." He replied, a playful smirk dancing along his lips.

"Do you know how hard it was to find you? You ran all the way to such a run-down Red-Level city. I never would have expected this of you, lady Vivian. Such a pampered vampire reduced to such a lousy state... tsk tsk, whatever happened to you?"

"What happened? I'll tell you what happened!! That prince of yours raped me, then threw me into the forest to die!"

"And yet, you never did die, now did you?"

"We never would have known that you were still alive, lady Vivian, if not for the reports of a female vampire roaming the woods, drinking an excessive amount of blood, began to float around. That is when we realized that you must still be out there, as there originally were no vampires within that forest."

"And when the rumors started to say that the vampire had a rather large belly and seemed to be pregnant... we just knew you must be bearing the child of his highness. Think about it. A dragon of royal blood with a vampire with blood just as noble... What will the child turn out to be?"

Mother looks flustered for a moment, having her whole life spilled out before her.

"And what exactly do you want from me?" She says.

"Just as I had said before. Your daughter and... a small taste. After all, you were always known to be one of the most beautiful vampires in the kingdom, Princess."

"Never!" She cried, attacking him with blades of blood.

"Although you had so much potential, you never did take the time to practice, did you. Always so caught up in making yourself look more and more beautiful. So disappointing."

I watch as he waves his hands, the blades go flying in other directions. He pointed a finger at her and then said, "goodnight, princess."

I couldn't bear to look as my mother was stripped and thrown onto the couch. I think one of the men took a bit of pity in me and knocked me out at some point. Or maybe they thought it would just be easier to deal with me later if I was out cold.

But nonetheless, I was grateful for their actions. At least I didn't have to listen to the sounds they were making anymore.

Truly, humans are so revolting...
