Chapter 9 - 9. BACK AT HOME

Nathen was left empty after his best friend's departure

*NATHEN

It wasn't easy to let go of Karen. We met at the age of 4 and she was a sweet heart. That kindness ran through the family because when I moved out with my dad after losing my mother Karen's mom welcomed us as if we were family. They would invite us from time to time for dinner and parties. Karen presented me to everyone in her town as her friend though we knew each other for only a week at that time. She was one person who never closed a chapter until a solution was found, without forgetting what a curious person she was.

One thing that surprised me was when she insisted and begged my father and her mother to take us to the same school. At that point I realised how attached she was to me. I promised myself to always protect her and make sure she wasn't lonely, depressed and especially bullied by anyone. Our relationship had some conflicts as she was a bit of a people pleaser. She never wanted to let down anyone and that's how she got thrown into the mud by people she thought were her friends, well except for her long time friends from kindergarten, Miriam and Florence.

Honestly I wouldn't forget the promises I made to her since It was one way I could still feel attached to her.

It was time I learnt from her example and put my life together too. But unlike Karen, I was taking a gap year before university. During this time I would be working and save up money for college. Of course I didn't talk about money to Karen because she would definitely wanna help me out and personally, I didn't want that.
