Chapter 18 - Melusine's Plea

Drawing his brand from its case, Cormac swam in the direction that the blue whales had been coming from. These murderers would not kill again!

Feeling Melusine grab him by the arm, the Young Egan turned and looked upon the Surface-Born Merrow-Maiden. Worry in her reddish-brown eyes, the Helena of the Deep uttered: "Cormac, please! Don't go! You are only one and you can't be out of the water for more than five minutes! You will be outnumbered and should your five minutes be up, you will be helpless against them!"

Melusine's plea did not fall upon deaf ears. Cormac heard and acknowledged the words that were said and he understood her worry. It was all too likely that he would get himself killed doing something like that and yet, he wanted to help… He wanted to defend the whales… but if he fell…

Sheathing his brand, Cormac looked into Melusine's worried eyes, nervously brought a hand to face and gently caressed her countenance. Quietly, he told her: "Don't worry, Melusine. I'm not going anywhere."

Holding onto his hand, Melusine closed her eyes, hoping, wishing, praying that she and him could stay like this for just a little longer. Alas, she knew they could not.

A small blush upon his ruddy front, Cormac drew his hand away, an action which caused Melusine to open her eyes and playfully pout. Smiling at his compeer, Cormac said to her: "Come on, lets get going."

And get going they did, no more knowing if the whalers would commit no murder that day than knowing what was ahead of them. Dangers from the Surface, dangers of the Deep, who could say? All they knew was that they had a destination to get to.
