Love Yourself: Highlight Reel

Before you start: Make sure to read the HYYH, WINGS, YNWA and Love Yourself: The Notes theory first! Otherwise nothing will make sense!

Let's GOOO with the Highlight Reel:

To be honest, there is not a lot to say about this. It seems as if Jungkook was trying to go somewhere/leave but the girl holds him back. They probably met after Jungkook's accident and became friends.

Suga has the girl by his side instead of Jungkook. Remember how he abandons the piano and two years later he found Jungkook playing it? The fact that Suga right now is playing the piano means that he started again, meaning that after his mother's death, he found his piano again. Now, as we know from WINGS/YNWA and also from the note, Jungkook should be the reason why Suga started playing again since Jungkook is supposed to be his piano (happiness/dreams etc). But we have the girl. So, this shows us that JK really was "replaced" by her.

The girl takes care of him.

JUNE 6 Rapmon and the girl on the bridge:

Namjoon watches as the girl struggles with some stuff

He only helps her pick up some stuff and notices the hair band that she uses

JUNE 18:

V keeps the girl from stealing/doing something bad.

MAY 31

Jimin, Jhope and the girl are together. And Jimin films them dancing.

MAY 31 NOTE

In the HR, Jhope is reminded of his mother by that girl and since the note is from the same day, I going to assume that in the note Jhope is also talking about the girl. In both the HR and this note is he reminded of his mother by her. I think when he says, "I have not been able to look at the face of a friends I've known for over a decade" it is just a figure of speech because it's impossible for him to have known the girl for over a decade.) Also, I was confused about why he said "he threw me a towel" so I asked the translator @snoweflake_dee and she said that it actually wasn't mentioned if it's a he or she etc so she just wrote he.

Now that I know that this makes more sense because in this whole note he is talking about the girl and it would be weird if we suddenly had a he.

The woman (his mom) said "Hoseok-ah" and then left him:

The girl asks him where he is going and since he has mentioned before that she reminds him of his mother, we can assume that after she asks him where he is going and says "Hoseok-ah" he is reminded of the time his mother said "Hoseok-ah" and then left him

His mother leaving + him having to stay in an orphanage + his pills

This all mean that he has something like depression

And remember what I said back in the beginning of this whole theory (back in WINGS):

The HR and the notes prove that he really was having problems.

Then we see V:

He's with the girl. That's the same place Jin met "his" girl (his partner)

V looks at his phone, which is his only way of contacting the other boys since they have split up after the fight.

Then we see some of his memories:

Suga is me 24/7

Remember these moments? They were from the prologue.

In the prologue they were shown as "happy times/moments" from Jin's illusion/dream world BUT:

This means that that (picture above) moment really did happen, which is why we see V remembering it.

There is one more thing:

Does this look familiar?:

Remember what this scene meant in the prologue?

Because of this once scene we found out how Jin died (= drowning with car)

The sound of cicadas that chirred like showers end in an instant. In the abrupt silence, I realize life's immense beauty. Just the fact that you are in it makes all the difference. Even if this were a dream, this is where I choose to be.

It shows that he, just like Jin (you'll see later on), chooses to stay with the girl instead of being with the boys. He "throws" away the thing with which he could contact the boys. He remembers the time he spent with them and decides to keep them as memories and not start new things with the boys.

Then we see Nams:

Once again, Namjoon only watches her from afar and doesn't make a move. Having already noticed her yellow hair band, he decides to give her a new one. Before she can notice, he just puts it next to her while getting off the bus.

Jungkook and the girl, who is also sick. And they notice a girl singing. That girl being Suga's girl:

And right after that, Jungkook remembers the time he spent with Yoongi:

Why? I think its because of the melody/music/song that the girl is playing. Maybe it's a song that Suga played next to Jungkook (pic above), or just a piece that Jungkook and Suga like. After he hears the girl, Jungkook walks closer:

Meaning that he probably recognized Suga's lighter.

Now:

We already know that Suga and the girl are pretty close. And if durning this time, Jungkook and Suga had been close as well, then Jungkook would know who that girl is or why she has the lighter.

But him being surprised shows us that Jungkook does not know anything about the girl or the lighter. This could mean that Jungkook and Suga haven't talked in a long time.

But anyways this proves that, Jungkook really isn't Suga's piano anymore. Jungkook was replaced by that girl.

Also:

This is the same room/apartment.

Jungkook and Suga were together at some point. Before there was the girl.

Back then it was Suga, Jungkook and the piano, meaning that, as said before, Jungkook realy did become Suga's piano (=> happiness etc) after they "re-met" on APRIL 7th. And back then, the apartment was still empty.

But after Jungkook and Suga stopepd talking, it is now Suga, the girl and the piano.

BEAUTIFUL

They look so cute omg

Anyways, here we once again have Jimin filming Jhope and the girl while they're dancing

Now to this part.

Suga checks his phone but judging from the frustrated face he makes afterwards, I am guessing that he was waiting for a call or a message but didn't get anything. Whose message/call is he waiting for?

Probably the girl. Because right now, the girl is the only person Suga is close to. He is not talking to the other boys, so who else could it be?

He was about to take out a cigarette when he stops and smiles.

It is obvious that he is thinking about the girl since she was the one who made him stop.

So, while waiting for a message/call from her, he gets frustrated and wants to smoke but then he remembers that the girl doesn't want him to. He then starts smiling at the thought of her.

He literally falls down to see who is calling him.

But there is no smile whatsoever. He just stares at the name.

Why would he look like this if it was the girl calling? He was waiting for her call and was smiling while thinking about her. So, why that face?

Just when he sees the name, Jin says this:

Why is it that the happiest moments usher in sudden fear? Looking back, I had known all along that underneath the glittering world before my eyes lay my deception, that everything was to collapse with a breath of wind. I turned away, sidestepped, simply closed my eyes. Afraid I was, afraid to be loved for who I am.

Suga was somewhat happy while thinking about the girl and waiting for her call. But then someone else (we don't know who) called. And it doesn't look like he is happy (he seems different)

I think the note and that call scene are connected. Because in that note he finds out something bad.

Now before I continue explaining what I mean, I gotta says this:

You might think but the girl is next to him in the note? And he gets a message not a phone call?

But the thing is:

Even if we were to look at Jhope's note from MAY 31and the Highlight Reel scene from MAY 31, there are many differences, even though it is the same day.

In the note there is no cake. The girl is already there.  Jhope doesn't even mention Jimin.

What I am trying to say is that the notes and the scenes from the highlight reel don't completely match, even though they're about the same day. Because Jhope is reminded of his mother when he gets that cake from the girl, not after she calls his name.

So just because in the note the girl is next to Suga, it doesn't mean that it cannot be and on the same day as that phone call scene from the Highlight Reel.

Now, if we assume that they're on the same day, it would make a lot of sense. Because in the note, we find out that Suga gets a message that makes his "heart feel heavy". Suga must have heard something bad.

And after finding out, Suga loses it.

what is this screenshot even loool

Then we see the how the girl catches up to him but Suga pushes her away. He doesn't want to stay by her side.

Why?

Suga was expecting her to call, he was happy while thinking about her and now he pushers her away. All this after getting that call. This means that whatever he found out makes him frustrated and angry enough to push her away.

What did he find out?

The only thing that comes to my mind is Jungkook's car accident.

Because look:

On JUNE 14, we see Jungkook in the hospital on a wheelchair and on JUNE 13, Jin finds out that Jungkook got hurt. This means that the accident must have happened before the 13th.

And on the 8th, Suga gets a call that makes his heart feel heavy and scares him.

And we also have this.

If it really is true that on that day, Suga found out about the car accident, then his behaviour would make sense (if you look at everything we have here)

Even though Suga and Jungkook aren't talking anymore, it doesn't mean that their friendship is completely forgotten or anything like that.

Jungkook was still the one who helped him "play the piano again" and it was still Jungkook who became his piano years after his mother's death.

But then they drifted apart and Suga only focused on the girl. And during the time he didn't "care" about Jungkook, he got hurt.

Also:

There are two options:

1. Suga does visit Jungkook but he doesn't tell Jungkook about the girl or the fact that he stopped smoking.

2. Suga doesn't visit him at all. [He might have gone to the hospital.

I think that the second one is more likely. Why? Because Suga feels guilty. While Jungkook was in that accident, Suga wasn't with him.

Remember what Suga said in his note moments before finding Jungkook in front of that piano in that shop?

He couldn't protect Jungkook and he couldn't stay by his side. Instead he was with the girl. And I think that because of that he is frustrated with/angry at himself.

Because both in WINGS and in YNWA, Suga was seriously affected by Jungkook. Be it the way JK wanted to help him when Suga was at his worst or be it Jungkook's death. So, why wouldn't it affect him now?

Suga is angry at himself and he is frustrated, that's why he pushes the girl away. Staying by her side and being happy might not feel right when Jungkook is hurting.

It actually was RUNCH RANDA and V but now its:

But now it is V and the girl. They do this "together".

They see the police and run away.

They try to hide but V tells the girl something and walks out. At the end, he gets caught.

Rapmon and the girl. But once again Rapmon is just watching.

When Namjoon was there, the black spot/writing below the "I'm fine" was not there, meaning that the thing with V happens after that bus scene with Rapmon.

Anyways.

Rapmon sees all the stuff that is written there and he is reminded of V.

And he just walks away.

We see Jhope and the girl dancing together. The room is lit brightly.

Jimin practises alone. His surroundings are dark. And there is no one else besides him.

In the next scene, Jimin and the girl accidenlty hurt each other? [To be honest, that scene just seems a bit off, I don't know why but it does.]

What could have happened: After practising alone, Jimin tries dancing with the girl. But he does something wrong and they end up hurt.

After getting hurt, the girl is being carried (probably to the hospital) by Hoseok but Jimin isn't next to them.

It seems as if he sees something and then turns back.

I think the reason why Jimin goes back is because he feels guilty.

Remember:

I cannot give you a 100% right answer here, just like in some of the other explanations. There is not a lot about Jimin and Jhope in the notes and in the Highlight Reel and most of the stuff that we see/read isn't very helpful when it comes to connecting these facts/theories. The only thing I can say now is:

Maybe the reason why Jimin and Jhope were together for so long and only had one girl is because they're special?

What I am trying to say is:

In WINGS, they were the innocent ones. Jimin chose evil because he was manipulated by Suga, not because he truly had evil thoughts since the beginning.

Jhope changed after watching all of his friends become evil. He didn't have a reason to stay good anymore.

But they both were the ones who stayed together the longest. They shared the same "ideas" and tried their best to believe that the happy times could come back.

And maybe they also have that type of bond in Love Yourself?

To be honest, I really am not sure… there is just not enough stuff to anything about those two. Looks like we'll have to wait for more to find out the real reason.

At the end of the HR he throws away something? I don't know what it is, maybe a hair band?

We see a happy and healthy Jungkook on his way to the girl with some flowers. But:

But the girl is gone.

Where is she?

There are two possibilities:

1. After Jungkook was released, she was healthy again and left the hospital, which would mean that she broke off contact with Jungkook.

2. She died and Jungkook doesn't know.

To be honest, number 2 would make a lot more sense since it would mean that instead of Jungkook, the girl died.

Moving on, let's come to the most interesting part:

[This is what Jin says during the Highlight Reel. What he says here is related to not only his emotions etc, but you can connect these paragraphs with the boys' emotions etc as well. But right now, we'll just focus on Jin]

Some moments become more vivid with the passage of time. Yesterday's many encounters and goodbyes existed for this moment. Every alley and crossroad I walked through were all meant to lead me to this very place. That kind of moment is what I mean.

To be able to completely understand and connect stuff like those paragraphs, I always "rephrase" them and try to make them less… confusing?

So I will add that here as well in case someone also needs that ^^

Talking about a special moment => for this one moment he had all those goodbyes and encounters, all the alleys and crossroads were supposed to bring him here (=> sounds a lot like fate lol)

becomes more vivid with the passage of time = what does he mean by that? Vivid = very clear, powerful, and detailed => Some moments become more clear, powerful and detailed with the passage of time.

Now this all sounds as if he's reflecting. Only after some time does he realise the importance and "real meaning" behind that one moment.

What moment?

The moment Jin met the girl.

The sound of cicadas that chirred like showers end in an instant. In the abrupt silence, I realize life's immense beauty. Just the fact that you are in it makes all the difference. Even if this were a dream, this is where I choose to be.

Because of that one person, life becomes beautiful and even if this "beautiful life" is just a dream, this is where he wants to stay.

or better said:

Because of that girl, Jin's life becomes beautiful again (by "forgetting" his problems and only focusing on the girl). And even if this beautiful life is just a dream and not reality, Jin wants to stay here. Why? Because reality is full of problems.

Why is it that the happiest moments usher in (to make an activity or process begin/introduce ) sudden fear? Looking back, I had known all along that underneath the glittering world before my eyes lay my deception, that everything was to collapse with a breath of wind. I turned away, sidestepped, simply closed my eyes. Afraid I was, afraid to be loved for who I am.

By "choosing to stay in that dream", "ignoring the problems" and only "focusing on the girl", Jin was deceiving himself into believing that his world was beautiful. Deep down, he knew that with just a breath of that wind (Note from June 13 – humid wind shaking picture – if you don't remember go back), everything could collapse, but he chose to ignore it. He "turned away, sidestepped and simply closed his eyes". Why? Because he was afraid of reality. Reality meant problems. And to be able to solve these problems he has to face himself (Note from June 13) To be happy with the boys, he has to face himself, but he doesn't have the courage to do so.

Because he knows that once he does that, he'll find his real self. And he is scared to be loved for who he really is. His real self can't be loved but he wants to stay with the girl, that's why he says, "Not yet" (Note from June 13)

This is the day Jin gets the flowers and goes to meet the girl.

And what he is holding right now is the girl's notebook that she dropped on JUL 11 – the day Jin saw her. And in her notebook we see the Smeraldo flower. (Underneath the picture it says "Mysterious flower".) The girl was interested in that flower.

And that is why Jin wants to buy her those flowers.

He wants to make her happy. He wants to be a good person.

He believes that by making her happy, he can become a good person.

But he is just deceiving himself because he can't face himself. He knows that the boys are/are going to be "unhappy" because avoiding a problem doesn't mean that it is solved. It still is there and keeps getting bigger and more complicated. And deep down, Jin knows that but he doesn't have the "courage" to talk to the boys and get rid of his guilt. Instead of doing that, he completely focuses on someone else and give his everything to make that person (the girl) happy because he thinks that by making her happy he and his world can become good.

This is the same as in WINGS – it's the same principle – he deceives himself into thinking everything is alright (WINGS – dream world) or he avoids it (LY) and focuses on the girl.

He takes something.

Then the car leaves. That car being:

[this picture is from @ktaebwi)

Meaning that Jin took the flowers now.

And he waits for the girl.

And then BAM

The girl dies before Jin can give her the flowers.

Just like that owner and the man from the Smeraldo story.

In the end, Jin couldn't make her happy the way he wanted to. And his beautiful world collapsed with a breath of wind.

VIOLET LIGHT hah back at it with the colours huh :')

Violet:

He couldn't make the boys happy, so he wanted to at least make the girl happy. But she died because of him, just like how the boys had died.

V committing suicide.

Jungkook dying in a car accident.

V killing his father.

Jin letting down the six lily petals (the boys).

Jimin's desire to commit suicide.

Suga's fight with Jungkook.

Jungkook getting hit.

Jhope's overdose.

V and the darkness.

If we could turn back the clock, where should we go back to? Once we reach that place can all our mistakes and errors be undone? Will happiness be ours to stay?

These were all things that happened in WINGS.

But the clock was turned back. Jin turned it all back to before all of this this happened. From WINGS to YNWA and then all the way back to Love yourself.

And did it help? Were his mistakes and errors undone? Was happiness his to stay?

Though many seasons pass, there are places that cannot be reached. Yet another storm to be faced and to be weathered head-on. Loving without fear. Hesitating and parting. Merely living as the person I am.

No, it didn't work.

And we are back on the 30th of August and Jin doesn't leave to meet the girl. Instead, he picks up the Lilies. The Lilies that he always let down.

Until now, the boys always ended up suffering in a way.

First it was because of Jin's death. Then it was because of them parting ways. And both times, Jin was the one who "let them down".

Even though WINGS and LY are different stories, there are still some things that are similar.

- In both, relationships/bonds are broken.

In WINGS: First it was Jin's and a girl relationship, then his and the boys' (Jin dying) and lastly, the special pairs (for ex. Jungkook and Suga fighting).

In LY: First Jin's and the boys' friendship, then the other six boys' friendship and lastly the relationship with their "newly found" special partners (for ex. Suga and the girl fighting).

- People die.

Jungkook and Jin died in WINGS, which is the main reason why Jin went back in time (set the turning point all the way back)

But in LY, Jungkook and Jin don't die. Instead, Jin's "girlfriend" dies. (and most probably Jungkook's friend as well)

But now, we go back to the 30th again. And instead of letting the Lilies fall

He picks them up.

I also wanted to include the posters:

The direction my heart flows, the day I want to run to that place. / Don't come closer. You'll be unhappy. / I lied, there is no reason to love someone like me. / It's not the right time, so I'll just look at you from afar behind you. / If I had made a different choice, would they have stayed? / I'm okay as long as you shine. / If I can turn back time, I want to become the best man in the world.

-        The direction my heart flows, the day I want to run to that place. / Don't come closer. You'll be unhappy.

After Suga left school in YEAR 20, Jungkook was worried and wanted him to come back. Even after 2 years, we see Jungkook in front of a piano, thinking about Suga. But when Suga arrived in front of that instrument shop, he said that he didn't want to hurt anyone and that he didn't want to be close to anyone.

And I think these posters are supposed to show that.

-        I'm okay as long as you shine. / I lied, there is no reason to love someone like me.

I think we still don't know enough about Jimin and Jhope to say what these sentences really mean and in how far they are connected. We only know that while staying in the hospital, Jimin lies about not being able to remember something. We still don't know what that is though

-        It's not the right time, so I'll just look at you from afar behind you. / If I had made a different choice, would they have stayed?

I think Rapmon's sentence can also be connected to how his friendship with V went wrong in WINGS. Because instead of really helping V, he didn't really do anything and that's why V died.

But I can't really say anything more to that.

-        If I can turn back time, I want to become the best man in the world. / If I could turn back time, I want to go back to the sea of that summer.

I think this is pretty obvious. I already explained how Jin went back in time from WINGS to YNWA and then lastly LY (at the end he goes back to AUG 30th again). He wants to go back to that sea of that summer (back when the boys were together and happy) and he wants to be a good man.

~~~~
So, this is all I have for y'all :D
I think what BTS is trying to tell us is that you have to first love yourself and accept everything about yourself, so that others can love you as well. Because the more you try to change, the more you will pay attention to the "imperfections", meaning that you will never be satisfied. I think.
Sadly, there is still a lot I can't explain, but I hope I didn't disappoint you guys. Once again, I'm sorry that it took so long. But I hope you enjoyed it!
To be honest, compared to HYYH, WINGS and YNWA, this one was a bit more… tiring to write? That might be because we still don't know a lot about Love Yourself or because of the fact that I was half sick while working on this :') But nonetheless, I had a lot of fun ^^.
I know that the Love Yourself theory is quite confusing and if you have any questions, just ask! It doesn't matter if it's something small.
And if you have anything you want to share regarding this theory, feel free to tell me.
Sorry if I have any typos!!!
