Have you ever thought how having no one, absolutely no one in your life? Well, that's me. I have no one. I was only seven years old.
"Hey, Theo, what do you want to eat?"Delores said. "Fried chicken. You chose the sides." Theo said. Okay, just wait a minute until I start. Eat some snacks or some. Delores said. Mom, I know he's coming over. Phillip is your boyfriend, you can't hide nothing from me. You should know that by now, I mean I am your son. Theo said. "Ah, you know me very well"- the doorbell rings. And that must be him. Delores goes to open the door. When she opens it she immediately closes it, and puts her back on the door. Theo, call 911. Delores said. A sword come through the door. Theo pulls his phone out and he dial 911. 911, what's your emergency? The operator said. Someone is at my door with a sword a- and they are trying to kill my mom. Theo said. A sword? The operator said. Yes! A sword. Theo said. Okay, what's your address? The operator said. Uh, 8634 South Benedict road. Theo said. I'm sending cops your way. Just stay on the call. The operator said.
The sword slices Delores' right arm. She screams in pain. Mom! Theo said. Theo, stay back. Leave through the back door. Delores said. I'm not leaving you. Theo said. You have to, for your safety. A sword goes through Delores' chest. Run. Delores said. Theo drops his phone and he runs out the back door. Delores' body fall and the door opens.
As Theo run he breath hard but he hears a twig snap behind him. He stops and turn around. He turns back around and sees Phillip. Phillip, you're here. Something happened to my… mom. Theo looks at Phillip's hand and see a sword in it. He tries to run but Phillip drops the sword and pull his arm. I had to. I had to. Phillip said. Why would you have to kill my mom?! Theo said. I killed your whole family. So that we can be together. Father and son. Just me and you. We can be together forever. Phillip said. Theo starts to cry. How do you kill my whole family and say that? I would never want to be your son. Theo said. Phillip starts to choke Theo. I don't care if I have to force you, but you will be my son. Got it? Phillip said. Theo spits on his face. Phillip stops choking him and he punch Theo in his face. Do you understand or no? Answer me damn it! Phillip said. Yes, I understand. Theo said. Good. Now get up and let's get back to the house.
Was your mom making fried chicken? Phillip said. Yeah, she is. Theo said. Was. She's dead on the floor, right by the door. So it's "was" and not "is". You should be smart enough to know that. After all the school is asking you to skip third grade and go right into fourth. Phillip said. Theo looks outside and sees the police lights. Uh, so that's why you've been gone for these two weeks. You had to kill my family. Theo said. Yeah. There all scattered around the country. Like can they all just be in Redwood City? It's not that hard to live in one city. Oh, and don't try to run. I don't wanna hurt you. Phillip said.
The back door get blown open and cops enter the house. Phillip easily gives up. He puts his hands up and the cops put him in cuffs. Call an ambulance. The cop said. Is she dead? Theo said. What's your name buddy? The cop said. It's Theo Tate. Theo said. Oh you're a Tate, I'm so sorry. The cop said. So he was right. I'm the last of my family.
An alarm wakes Theo up. It's been ten years and I'm still having that same dream. First day of my junior year. I never thought that I would make it this far. Theo said. Theo puts on his headphones on plays Generation why. He takes off his pjs and put some regular clothes on. Brush his teeth and go downstairs. Ugh, I have no food. Looks like I have to go shopping. Theo said. He walks out the house, gets in his car and drives to school.
Junior year. What a delight. Same teachers, same lockers, same everything. Theo said. Everyone, can I have your attention? This year we will not be having a homecoming. The school board decided that because of what happened last year. If you freshman do not know then it should stays like that. Well, that's all I had to say. Sorry to stop y'all in the parking lot. The principal said. Hmm. That sucks… for everyone else. Theo said.
What the hell! Because of one person we can't have homecoming. I'm pissed! Izzy said. I'm as pissed as you are. But we can't do anything. We won't have homecoming. Mathew said. Wrong. The freshman's, sophomores, and the seniors all having a house-homecoming party. The juniors aren't having one. Heather said. Why is that? Izzy said. They all saying that their parents won't let them. I asked every junior and they all said no. Heather said. You didn't asked all of them. Matthew said. I'm pretty sure I did. Heather said. No, look behind you. It's quiet, smart guy. Mathew said. Oh, she didn't ask Theoretically. You should go ask him, Matt. Izzy said. Why me? Matt said. Because we got to get to class, and you're the only one who hasn't asked anyone for a party for homecoming. Bye Mattie. Heather said.
History first. Wow, that's a twist. Theo said. Theo closes his locker and see someone behind it. Hey, Theoretically. Matthew said. Um, first of all: my name is Theo. Second of all: what do you want? Theo said. Oh, I guess "Theoretically" was a little nickname that they called you. Uh, I was wondering if the juniors can party at your house? Mathew said. Why ask me? Theo said. Because everyone else said no. Mathew said. Theo sighs. No. Now if you excuse me, I have to go to history class. Which that is all the way across the whole school. Theo said. The bell rings and he starts walking, Mathew follows him. I won't take no for an answer. Matthew said. Well, you'll have to take "no" for an answer right now. Theo said. Do you want me to beg? Cause I'll beg. Okay, you asked for it. Please? Please? Please? Please? Please? Please? Mathew pleaded. If I say "yes" will you stop asking? Theo said. Yeah, that's the whole point. Mathew said. Fine. When is this party? Theo said. Friday, 8 o'clock. Matthew said. Theo pulls out his phone. Here, give me your number. And I'll text you my address. Matthew grabs the phone out of Theo's hand and he puts his number in. He gives the phone back to Theo. Okay, you should have got the text now. Theo said. Yeah, I got it. 8634 Benedict road. Isn't that the place where the kid was left all alone with no family. If I'm correct his name was… Theo Tate. Mathew said. Don't tell anyone. I don't wanna be the center of attention for the school. So please don't tell no one. Theo said. Okay, I can do that. Mathew said. Thank you. Uh, what's your name? Theo said. Mathew, but my friends call me Matt. Mathew said. Mathew it is. Theo said. No silly. You're my friend now. So call me Matt. Now come on, we got history class. Matt said. For the first time in ten years I made a friend. That's mot accurate. Theo thought. Come on, what are you waiting for? Matt said. My bad. I'm coming. Theo said
