Azraiel has just finished his internal rant about the well being of his mate. He even rehearsed the lines he would say while revealing his supernatural self to Charlotte. Thinking about what she must be doing right now, he decided to ask his beta to check up on her.
Azraiel furrowed his brows when he couldn't get through Matt. It is odd, he thought. Matt almost never blocked him out. Shrugging his shoulders he released a breath and decided to go to the medical wing himself.
Azraiel smelled him before he saw him. The air around the medical wing smelled like his beta. He continued to walk until he reached his mate's room. He peeped inside her room from the glass panel in the door. There he was, his beta Matt sitting quite rigidly beside Charlotte's bed. Both of them were quiet, just staring at each other intensely.
Although he trusted his beta, Azraiel's wolf didn't like his nearness to his mate; especially in the given conditions.
Realizing that his wolf was about to resurface, he decided to break their staring contest and entered the room.
"Matt....What the hell are you doing here?" Azraiel couldn't help the angry tone in which he questioned his beta. He watched as Matt broke out of whatever trance he was in and removed himself from the chair. Matt looked at him for a brief second and then again at Charlotte with questioning eyes. Charlotte just gave him a weak smile and shook her head.
Matt replied with a smile of his own and looked at Azraiel again, " I just wanted to make sure she was alright. I'll wait outside for you." He left without waiting for Azraiel's reply.
Azraiel's jaw clenched at his behavior. He had seen the interaction between his mate and his beta and he didn't like it. He didn't like it a bit. They had been talking about something while he was contemplating various ways of telling her the truth. Now, his mind was stuck upon the conservation they were having instead of the one he intended to have with her.
He looked up to find his mate staring at him with her head slightly tilted to the side. His heart skipped a beat at the questions swimming in her eyes. He knew she was confused and scared but right now looking at her, he knew she wasn't weak.
Something had changed between the time when she woke up and now. She somehow seemed more relaxed and calm.It was like she knew something he didn't and it put him on edge. Sure, she is his mate but she is also human and no one knew better than him how cruel humans could be.
Azraiel walked quietly and positioned himself on the chair that was earlier occupied by Matt. "How are you feeling now?"
He asked with his eyes undeniably softer than they were a few minutes ago.He hated that he was putty in her hands even though he didn't know her.
"I'm better..I think." She replied, sounding a bit breathless. Azraiel couldn't help but notice that her heartbeat had increased. His wolf was wagging his tail and jumping up and down at the thought of his mate responding to the mate bond.
"I lied to you earlier." Charlotte spoke up after the silence of a few seconds. Azraiel was surprised that she was admitting it all by herself. He thought he would have to start the conversation in an interrogative manner but boy was he wrong. He looked up at her with questioning eyes.
"I'll tell you everything I remember, but I need some sort of surety that no harm will come to me. I mean...I know you guys can kill me anytime you want and I'll be a fool to trust your words but that's all I can do for now." His mate finished with her eyes wide. He could still hear her fast heartbeat. Azraiel was surprised but not disappointed. He quickly masked his emotions with a poker face and decided to test his little human.
"You are right. You are indeed a fool if you fall for anyone's words just like that. Although...I have no reasons to harm you, I still need more information to believe that you intend no harm to my people or me. I know you were injured at the time we found you but I won't be surprised if this turned out to be a tactic to breach this town's security."
Azraiel wasn't wrong. Had she landed near any other pack's border, she would have been caged in a cell and tortured until she either spoke the truth or died. The only reason that she was alive was because he did things differently in his pack and the fact that she was his mate made it almost impossible for anyone from his pack to hurt her. They were unconsciously bound by their duty to protect their Luna at all costs.
He watched as his mate studied him for a second and an almost smirk formed on her lips. "I know I could get killed anytime, but I think you'll be interested in whatever I'm going to tell you. Of course, it is up to you to believe me or not but I know you'll figure it out pretty soon. As far as the security of your town is concerned, I don't think I can pull any stunt in my given condition and even if I do, I am sure you have abundant means to destroy me within seconds; both in quality and quantity." Charlotte finished, her voice low but firm and confident.
There it was again, Azraiel thought. The way she spoke made him believe that she knew more than what she was letting on. It seemed she knew what she was saying. The thing that concerned him more was what could she possibly know that would interest him? He knew he had no other option but to listen to whatever she wanted to tell him. As far as her safety was concerned, his wolf would never let any harm come to her even if she turned out to be as vile as his enemies.
Azraiel pretended to think for a few seconds and then replied, "Alright. I promise no harm will come to you as long as you are in this town and as long as you don't hurt anyone here. But that's all I can give you...a promise. Now, tell me what you know." Azraiel was curious about her story. Of course, he wanted to trust everything she would say but he knew better than to trust humans just like that. He knew he would have to cross check every word she would utter from now. The fact that she wasn't afraid of him when most humans would be quivering at his sight just made him more cautious of her.
Well....Let's see what you've got, Luna!
