Chapter 8 - We will be, who we will become

As the preparation was underway and everyone was bustling with the fire of survival, commander Lin Teryul held a meeting with the town council in regards to political, physical, and rational matters, after the meeting they began preparing the battle unworthy folk for their trip and began their construction of weaponry that was to be used in battle. Ari, Kalvin, and old man Jan were all assigned to tasks as was everyone else.

The trio was spearheading the build of the northwest watchtower since they proved to have the most experience with wood material in the sector they were put in, Sector Z. Ari was holding one end of a 4 x 9 board as Kalvin hammered it into the base of the watchtower platform, as he was about to finish, one of the two men that were play fighting knocked over the two-man ladder that the both of them were standing on. With quick reflexes, Ari grasped Kalvin's shirt and set him in her arms as she jumped off. her feet plunged into the ground with a soft thud before she quickly recovered and dashed out of the way. The ladder fell and both men and the audience were in awe at what had just transpired.

Ari stared at the both of them and as she was about to go and confront them, old man Jan stepped forward and put his hand on her shoulder. She stopped and Jan went ahead to talk to the men. After a few minutes, they came over to apologize for their blunder. In her head, Ari thought they should have apologized for being stupid but she didn't say anything. Instead, she went over to where Kalvin was taking a break, and sat beside him. She put her head on him and he looked at her. He could feel her tension so he put his hand on her head to calm her down.

What they were building had to be made well. The watchtowers would be a very crucial asset in the upcoming battle. Without it, they would virtually be fighting blind. So with 26 sectors of different amounts of individuals based on the integrity of the task they were assigned to, there were 4 sectors in charge of building the four corner towers of the town. Sectors A, P, R, and Z.

Aside from those 4 sectors, there were 2 sectors in charge of support towards the other sectors, B and C. There were other sectors doing different things such as keeping a steady stream of people leaving the town so there wouldn't be a conflict with the construction or chaos amongst some of them. There were also sectors that were put in charge of building melee and long-range weaponry. Some of the blacksmiths from the kingdom were brought to teach sector D how to use certain tools and taught blueprints for different weapons.

Technical magicians were brought as well to teach sector M to imbue things like cannons with magic. Although there were many races, not many were able to utilize magic. Some races better than others and some races who couldn't use magic at all. Races like that were usually able to do other very complex things that normally wouldn't be able to be done. The power of bloodlines was respected by all races despite prejudice. But due to that as well, races were wary of each other and didn't always want to mingle.

Throughout history, many truces and contracts have been created and broken and the prejudice only grew stronger. Because magic was fairly rare it would have been quite hard for sector M to be able to learn everything in a matter of 3 months. The king ordered there be sufficient magicians there to imbue everything with magic because it would be an indispensable help in the upcoming battle.

As if no time had passed at all, Ari opened her eyes and realized that she had fallen asleep. The sun was already setting, the bright red horizon captivated Ari and she started.

"Hey…"

She snapped out of her trance at the voice of her friend, she flinched a little and didn't respond as she was caught off guard.

"Thanks for saving me"

Kalvin let out a subtle sigh and Ari replied.

"Pfft, sounds like it took all you had to say that"

He got a little irritated and wanted to hit her on the head.

"Your strong, but when you're caught in a situation where you are unprepared you freeze up. That's why I'm here, to save you at those times"

Ari said as she looked up at him and smiled. He stared at her for a minute and told her to get up so they could go and eat.

The sun had gone down and it began getting dark. He realized that she was right. But he didn't want to be reliant on her, because of the way things were going, it's very possible that there would be a time when they would not be able to be together. And in a time like that, if he wasn't able to make decisions for himself he would surely die. There was no way he was going to allow himself to die because of not being prepared. He steeled himself and decided to be prepared for unpreparable things. He didn't care that realistically, that would be impossible. One day he would have to save her from certain death. And he was determined to repay his debt.

Old man Jan who was covertly laying on top of the roof had heard everything. He blew a puff of his pipe and chucked. He was actually really happy to have raised those kids even if it was against his own will.

In the middle of the town, the Town Hall was closed but there was a meeting happening on the inside. People who looked menacing enough to be villains. Were they allies of the town or were they intruders who were here to destroy the town from the inside out?
