Chapter 3 - Descent

From afar, Etna would seem a bright white dot. Only one-fifth of its surface, the stripe in its equator, has blue, green and red; the rest is coated in ice.

Near Etna's low orbit, the spatial fabrics rippled and a silver ovoid phased into existence:

The ovoid wasn't perfect, for it oscillated like a falling raindrop. Its mirror surface flowed like some magnetic liquid, forming beautiful patterns that swam across its surface.

Despite the ovoid plummeting onto the surface below, there seemed to be no change for a dozen minutes other than its silver surface slowly crystallizing.

...

That early morning, a bright white plasma tail lit the sky across several kingdoms.

...

The rising sun on the horizon refracted on the ovoid's surface as it decelerated to subsonic speeds before plunging into the thick clouds below.

Amidst lightning and thunder, the ovoid flew through the rain for half an hour; it trespassed into a city and hovered through its streets, stopping before a well-lit mansion.

...

In a gloomy room lay a sickly lady, and by her side, asleep on a chair, her husband. Despite her youth, her brown hair had streaks of grey.

Phasing through the wall like a phantom, the 2-meter-high ovoid remained still for a few seconds. Then, it hovered closer as translucent emerald energy tethers extended from its body towards the young couple.

For a few minutes, green energy arcs danced over the bed. The human eye may not discern the changes happening to the man, yet anyone would be able to tell that her skin gained a youthful glow.

Her hair partly shed, partly morphed into a dense snow-white mane.

...

The ovoid hovered over the dark empty streets. The heavy rain and dim street lighting didn't allow one to see beyond five meters.

The alien object flew beyond the city walls towards the vast crop fields: there, it went towards one of the nearby stone houses, phasing through its walls. Soon, emerald light leaked through its windows.

Leon woke feeling light in both body and mind. As he stood up from the noisy old sofa, he almost cut his feet with the sharp bottle fragments scattered across the wooden floor.

After checking no glass got into his slippers, he casually wore them and went to the storeroom to get a broom.

Having sorted out the mess, Leon found his eyes glued to the alcoholic beverage on the wooden shelves of the storeroom. Usually, he would've taken a bottle or two: yet now, after staring for a few seconds, he came out of the room and closed the door.

Looking at the rain violently lashing out at the windows, Leon walked to the extinguished fireplace, threw in some wood from the side, and lit the fire producing, from the tip of his finger, a spark so bright the whole room flashed white.

Leon found himself a little out of place. Everything seemed real yet illusory: he didn't feel like himself. His deprecating thoughts had been quiet for a while now and didn't seem to return even at the sight of rain, which reminded him how he didn't inherit the water-bending talent of his mother.

Looking out the window, he raised his hand like he had done many other times, commanding his spiritual energy to bend the water to his will.

The raindrops outside the window slowed for a brief moment as his arm felt the weight of the water. Caught unprepared, his extended hand dropped down with a yank making him lose his grip on the element.

With his energy drained, Leon stood in a daze looking at his arm. It worked! Usually, nothing would've happened, making him feel like an idiot for trying again, yet it had finally worked!

Leon extended his arm again and watched as a floating blob of water formed on the other side of the glass. Feeling jittery, Leon played with the little glob of water until his sight started to darken, which interrupted his fun.

He hadn't accumulated much spiritual essence even though he was 22, and this much was already overdrawing his energy reserves.

Everything seemed too good to be true. Feeling sleepy, he walked to the sofa; midway changed his mind and instead entered the bedroom where his wife rested.

Checking on his baby daughter sleeping in her crib, he walked to the bed, quietly got under the blanket, hugged his woman and let his mind drift to sleep.
