At the lunch table, Kiara aimlessly poked into the metal tray and bit into the fork that had nothing on it. She repeated the same process for who knows how long while the people around her had already let go of their crockery just so they could record her stupid actions. The guy who had opened the door at her nose came to the table where she was sitting and placed his tray beside her before sitting across from her. He picked up his spoon and asked Kiara in an interesting tone.
"You must be liking the taste of that, don't you?" He asked and ate his food. Kiara snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him blankly before nodding. "Huh? I mean… Yes, Yes it's good." She replied dumbfoundedly. The guy kept eye contact with her for a few seconds before speaking. " Without looking at your tray tell me what you just had for lunch?"
Kiara who listened to him attentively blinked for a few seconds as she couldn't recall what she had bought for herself. Without thinking anymore she looked down at the empty food tray in front of her. "It's empty." She mumbled in a low voice.
"Exactly, That way I was wondering what that thing tasted like. You have a very unique taste preference." He held his laugh and looked back at his food.
Suddenly she felt her cheeks grow warmer and she looked around at the people who had been looking at her with weird eyes. The rush of embarrassment made Kiara want to crawl into a nearby hole. She looked away and lowered her head, Her brows got knitted together and she gritted her teeth. "What has gotten into you! Stop thinking about him" She scolded herself.
"Is it because I banged the door at you the other day? If it is, please feel free to tell me I am more than happy to pay for the medical examination." HE added to which Kiara looked at him with an embarrassed look.
"No, No, No! Absolutely not… I am just a little too caught up with work, that is the reason." Kiara didn't want to make him feel burdened,
He replied with a smile, "By the way, I am Miles for the Accounting department." He introduced himself. Kiara replied with a smile and said. "Kiara from the advertising department," It was a brief interaction before Kaira decided to run away from all the humiliation she was suffering from. When she reached back to her cabin something not very pleasing welcomed her eyes. A tall tower of files was lying on her table with a sticky note attached to the top of it. She plucked it off the papers and read it. "Check them before submitting it to the manager, -Suli"
Kiara felt her blood boiling up and she wasn't able to take this anymore. She picked up the tall bundle of the files and marched over to their coworker Suli, Who was, not surprisingly, busy with retouching her makeup. Kiara didn't care what she would say to her if she refused to do her work, Kiara has had too many scoldings just because of Suli dumping her work on Kiara. That would end up in her almost losing her job.
Kiara slammed the files on Suli's table and looked her in the eyes with a straight face. "I suppose you forgot some of your files on my desk, I came to return them to you and I hope that would not happen again."
The sudden change in Kiara's temper made many heads turn towards her. After all, she was just an intern and not a full-time worker.
Suli, who was a charismatic woman, looked at her with disbelief. She didn't want to lose her cool that quickly so she asked in a light tone. "I just asked you to do me a small favor, WHy are you making such a big deal out of it." She stood up while giving her a lenient smile.
"I am sorry but it seems like I don't have enough time on my hands to do you any favors." Kiara smiled at her...
"That's so rude of you." She spoke in a soft yet angry tone as she didn't want to ruin her reputation as a kind lady.
"I am sorry if you think that way but I wanted to let you know about this. SO in future please keep your work at your desk." Kiara breathed in heavily and turned around to go back to her seat under the judgemental gaze of the audience.
After hours of constant work, Kiara lifted her head to see that the sun had already set and that most of her coworkers had left for their homes. She and some of the cleaning staff were the ones that were left. She slowly packed up her things and turned off her computer and got out of the building. She stretched her muscles and took a long breath. While her hands were still in mid-air she felt a vibration in the back pocket of her jeans. It was her phone that was ringing. She pulled it out and attended the call even though the caller was unknown.
"Hello? Who is this?" she asked.
"This is Inspector Josh, Can you come to the police station now?"
"Police Station?" She was confused. "Can I know the reason?"
"Your brother has been arrested," He replied leaving Kiara in utmost shock.
The phone ended but she stood there with a blank face. "My brother? Did I have a brother? How come Dad never told me about that?" She spoke to herself with confusion. AFter thinking for a long time, no reasonable explanation came to her mind except for her to visit the police station on her own.
She rushed to the roadside to catch a taxi.
Within half an hour she reached the police station. It was her first time visiting the place so she was a little nervous and almost bumped into a guy who was taking in a tray full of coffee cups. "I am so sorry," she apologized.
"It's okay,'' he replied and began to walk away. "Wait! Where can I find inspector Josh?" HS stopped the coffee man and asked for a favor.
"He is sitting right there." He pointed towards a guy who was sitting with a frown on his face.
"Thank you for the help."
After walking past many people she stood across Inspector Josh's table. "HI, Sir, I receive a call from you a while ago. I think there might have been a misunderstanding. I don't have a brother," She said.
"YOu don't? Then why did he say that you were his sister?" He pointed at the bench on the wall beside the prison bars.
"What the hell…"
