Chereads / The Chronicles of Mikayla / Chapter 7 - Living A Nightmare

Chapter 7 - Living A Nightmare

The cloudy skies were soon giving way to a brilliant blue ever-stretch of life as though the sun was forcefully pushing the heavens apart, within a few hours the day was bright and warm.

Kay was standing out in the forest, in front of her was a man-made cave leading down into who knows where.

Beside her stood a man and a woman, the supposed guards of the cave, she couldn't see beyond the darkness, but ever so often she could hear a few words penetrate from the deep within.

"So, just how many of you are there?" She asked after a boring extended silence, but the two guards just glanced at each other before staring back out into the forest.

"C'mon."

Having nothing else to do she walked out into the forest to a boulder and sat. "Can you at least tell me why I'm here then?" She shouted, pouting. "I could've been long gone by now at least tell me that much."

The she-Hound guard sighed.

"I can't believe he thinks this kid has any potential." The man frowned. "All I see is a spoilt brat."

"They told me she took on an entire pack of Werewolves by herself." The woman replied, looking at Kay in the distant. "She might not seem much, but she's definitely something if she can keep her head in front of an Alpha."

They were practically whispering, but she was able to hear them as though she was using headsets in high definition.

The third day had passed since the moon was full which meant she was more in control of her impulses, so Kay decided to mess around a bit.

She took off at top speed toward the tunnel then jumped, smiling wickedly as she did this, she wasn't surprised when the guards grabbed her legs and successfully tossed her backward.

She balanced herself mid-fall and landed on her hands and legs. "So, just how good are centuries in America anyway?" Kay asked before she ran toward them again.

"This damn.." The male Hound guard snapped in annoyance then grabbed her by her backpack and slammed her chest-first onto the forest floor, causing a bit of a rumble. "What're you up to, you damn Omega!" He had already lost his composure as he knelt on her arms and sat on her back, using one hand to hold her head while the other was poised to deliver a blow to her neck.

Kay huffed and chuckled. "Just.. having a little.. fun." She slowly began rising beneath him.

The she-Hound grabbed her hands and pressed them onto the ground.

"Are you a spy, who sent you?" The she-Hound asked, twisting Kay's hands unnaturally, her short brown hair waved with the breeze as she practically scanned Kay with her hazel eyes.

"Who could ever bother spying on such a big pack, the only thing they could do is hope not to piss you off." Kay replied, forcefully bringing back her hands and placing her palms on the ground.

The guard on top of her struck the back of her head when he realised she was gaining more strength, but was surprised when she didn't even budge. "Ouch." Kay commented before she grabbed the woman's leg and the hand on her head, with a huff she tossed the man directly onto his partner causing them to collide with grunts of pain.

She slipped away walking backward on her hands and then back-pedaled several metres from them.

Both guards looked at each other incredulously, unable to figure out how she'd so easily overpowered them.

"Fun right?" Kay asked. "Round two?"

They both stood up and dusted themselves off before simultaneously attacking her again, with a throaty roar the man clasped his hands and brought down his combined fist at her while the woman slowed before using him as a shield.

Kay caught the guard's attack with a single hand, pushing against his brute force and then spun around him, grabbing the woman by her shoulder and pushing her toward her falling partner, causing them to both collide again.

Recovering faster than the last time, they stumbled over each other then launched another attack at her, though this time, the mood seemed to have taken a swerve into something playful rather than serious.

They weren't sure of the amount of time passed, but they only stopped when someone awkwardly cleared their throat. "That's enough, Kerri, Brown." The person called at them, causing them all to stop mid-fight.

"Luchkk." The now identified Kerri said surprised. "Whng ghij yuu gesh hrrr?"

"That'd work better if you released her shoulder from your mouth." Luke replied seriously.

Kay had Brown pinned on his belly in a chokehold while Kerri was on her back attempting to bite her.

The three of them quickly righted themselves realising they had been caught acting no better than cubs.

"You." Kay huffed, fixing her hair and dress with a shake. "You sure took your sweet time." She was addressing Luke, but her eyes had diverted to the woman who stood relaxed at his side with a lollipop in her mouth.

"I have questions for you, Omega." Luke softly spoke, his voice carried a power she hadn't thought possible, although he had said it gently, his words had a phantom roar that caused the hair on her arms to stand on end.

"Come." He again spoke softly, walking pass her along with the woman.

"I thought we were going into the cave." Kay said, slinging her bag over her back and keeping pace behind him, feeling a threat that came from walking at his side.

"Where are you from?" He asked, directly ignoring her statement.

"Europe."

"Your full name?" He asked.

"Mikayla Gayle." She huffed.

"Why did you come to Shallow Valley?" He asked immediately following.

She tried thinking of a reason, but came up blank. "It's just another stop before I move along once more."

"How long have you been an Omega?" Luke asked, his questions flowed as though he knew exactly what her replies would be before she even opened her mouth.

"I've never been a part of any, I left before that was possible." She responded again truthfully.

"Then how do you possess the strength you do?" He asked another question, while they finally stepped out of the forest and onto a dirt path that lead to a paved road ahead.

"Both my parents were Alpha." She again replied truthfully, not by choice, but something about him told her he'd be able to call out her lie easily.

"Are you from Cedar Springs?" He asked, and Kay instantly came to a halt, her heart began racing and her mind flashing back to and fro, the dead.

All she had done, all the lives she had taken.

He also stopped walking and turned around. He wanted to see her expression.

"What do you know of Cedar Springs?" She asked clenching her fist, staring at the ground and away from his away from his emerald gaze.

"Interesting." Luke's companion commented. "I sense a lot of turmoil within you." She stared at Kay like a scientist fascinated with a new discovery.

"You do know of Cedar Springs then, and probably of what happened that night seven years ago." Luke said stepping closer to her and using his index finger to raise her chin. "Was it you?" He asked, standing almost a foot taller than her, he could feel the fear as it radiated from her like heat from a fire, he could feel a reservoir of unbridled rage bubbling beneath her facade as it was suppressed over and over again, staring her down, he was able to witness as her act slowly fall apart.

"..me.." She was at a loss of words as her mind played the events over and over on repeat. "Me.." her limbs grew stiffer and stiffer until her entire body was shaking.

"Calm down." He hushed her, surprising his companion and her with a hug. "Then, I assume that what happened to our neighbors was also your doing."

"It, was...an accident." She sobbed out as his hug grew tighter.

Years, it had been years since she last felt an embrace, a hug, hands wrapped around her that could make everything feel easier.

A stranger had done what her mother wouldn't.

She couldn't even lift her hands, she just stood there as he held her like a father embracing a crying child.

Tears flowed down her cheeks and onto his shirt as her head rested against his chest.

"I can't control it." She whimpered, leaning harder into the hug. "The moon came and I ..I-wasn't-chained-up-and-I-lost-control just like every other moon, I lose control and no matter what I do it never stops hurting I just can't control it!" Her words grew frantic, surprising even Luke as he thought about it.

"A rage so powerful you lose yourself every time." The woman mused. "Unbelievable, she loses control every moon? And even now hasn't found any way of controlling it aside from chaining herself up, can such a life even be considered living?" The woman shook her head at just the thought.

"Mikayla, would you like to join us?" He asked, not letting go of the crying girl. "I can teach you contr-"

"It won't work!" She suddenly backed away from him almost falling. "It never works, control is impossible."

"Then let me take care of you, when there's a full moon, I'll chain you down myself." Luke stepped forward. "Become a part of my pack, I'll guarantee yours and everyone else's safety."

She stood there for several seconds unresponsive before her eyes rolled back and she toppled and fell. He was quick to grab her before she hit the ground, then quickly raised her into his arms like a bride.

"She's out cold, what the hell?" The woman sighed.

"Belle, Get her bag we're taking her to Sarah's." Luke said before stepping off.

"Will you really take her into our pack, she's a danger to everyone, even you." Belle picked up the bag and caught back up with him.

"A few hundred years ago, I was also like her, without control I went across entire states every moon killing everything in sight, I figure, if it's possible for me to control being a hybrid to the point where I can isolate my two bloodlines, she may be able to do the same with enough training.

"You could just let her go." Belle argued.

"We never leave our kind out in the cold like that, Belle if you can help, then you should, always." He said, looking at the sleeping bomb in his grasp.

"Her guilt will eventually drive her insane. If she's not helped, then she really might become our worst nightmare."
