Chapter 18 - Tug of War

And at the end…

Amidst the hustle of doctors and nurses…

The static sounds of machines and their alarms….

Kyle's heart pounces as his muscular arms do their best to revive the man he initially hated.

A sound of relief was heard.

"His heart is stable," a doctor announced.

Kyle did not even check who it was. He picked up his coat and stormed out of the room as soon as he heard the word "stable."

He did not mind anyone who greeted him along the long hallway of the mansion. Nothing matters. He can't even understand what he feels right now or even what he should feel now; everything from black and white is now a mixture of grey.

It is raining hard.

Just like that day …

The day where he swore against the man who he just tried his best to save today.

Kyle stands in front of the car door.

Looks up.

Closed his eyes.

Let the rain fell hard on his face.

"This rain never stops?" He thought.

Steven came down running, trying to stop Kyle from driving as he knew the man was not in the best state to run a vehicle.

But it was in vain; he was three minutes too late.

Kyle stepped hard on the gas and practically flew out of his dreaded place.

Steven made a call. Gates are made open.

"Observe him from afar,"

Hung up the call and observed how Kyle drifts on the wet pavement. Steven's eyes are full of sympathy, but he knows it is all in vain. He went back inside and asked the gates of the rich to be closed, observing how the gates leave a clear line of boundaries in his mind between the rich and the other half of the population where most of us belong.

A man drives fast above speed limits in the middle of harsh and cold wind, bringing sirens to wake.

His eyes are watering like falls, just like the nonstop rain and its unending roars. His mind is blank yet fragmented where flashes of memories peak alternatively – both the good and the other.

Loud sirens are heard.

"Driver of …." A police officer is asking the driver to pull out on the side.

Going once, going twice.

He didn't notice.

The last warning was sent.

"Driver of 32 -1010, this is our last warning…" the voice was sterner, and this is the only time that the situation is showing itself to the disturbed man driving the said plate number.

Kyle parked the car on the side.

"May I see your license, please. You are over speeding," The officer shows a particular type of meter to prove his claim.

He quietly followed as instructed and was about to give the officer his license when another officer rushed out of the police vehicle and whispered something to the first man in uniform to whom he was about to provide his identification.

A drastic change of reaction was seen to the first officer when he realized who the person he pulled out was,

"I… I… think this radar is broken. Sorry for disturbing you, sir, " the shaken voice of the initially proud officer echoes through the rain.

Kyle just slightly nodded, he watches as the Police mobile drove pass him as if nothing happened.

These are instances that prove how powerful his family is, how his father rose up from the gutter where he initially belonged and up to the top 1% of the population. Perks of being controlled and manipulated, a price to pay for the happiness brought by making your own choices and being allowed to make mistakes.

Mistakes. Failures. Foolishness. Are inexistent in Kyle's world- no second best, everything should be flawless.

Kyle pours himself another glass of Aperitivo Select, surrounded by lights and deafening music inside a well-known exclusive bar open for members only in the heart of Seoul.

Devastated.

He drowns himself in liquor as he swallows all his tears inside.

Another glass.

His sight of things gets doubled.

Another shot.

He spews inaudible words into the air.

He is about to get another drink when a familiar touch from a delicate hand stops him.

"It would be hard to carry you on my back if you blackout," A smile he would be able to recognize from afar greeted him.

He was happy to see her.

But should he be happy? He had the chance of saving this maiden's life today, a chance of being free with her- but he can't do it.

Kyle pushed Angel's hands away and gulped the drink she stopped him from having.

He poured another one and is about to have it again as if he is a runner thirsty for water.

Angel can't let him have another drink.

She knows Kyle is not good at handling his liquor, based on her experience, but is she right?

She gripped Kyle's hands.

Took over the glass he was about to drink.

One-shot.

"Yuck! This is too bitter! What the h*ck is this?"

Angel's world turned around- this is not something she can handle. Yes, she drinks, but she is never a strong drinker.

Angel tried to stand as her world turned around. It is ironic how she initially rushed here to pick up Kyle, but now it seems the latter should accompany her home.

"Sit down, you idiot. I did not tell you to come here,"

"What did you say? It's so f*cking loud here! "

Kyle looked at Angel and chuckled. It seems that having her here washes all his depression and sadness away.

"How did you know I am here?"

"What? I can't hear you, let's go out now. I am getting dizzy! What the heck are you drinking? Is there poison in there?!"

"ha, ha, ha" Kyle's laugh is hearty. Angel seems to be his instant source of endorphins whenever he needs one. When the pain he carries is too great, she comes like a wonder woman and saves him from his misery without her even knowing.

Angel still managed to drag Kyle out of the bar, of course, with Kyle's occasional guidance without her realizing. Kyle watched as this beautiful maiden tried to remind him of the steps, even if she seemed drunker than him.

Kyle's night would have been full of smiles if he did not see the person leaning outside Angel's car…

"Hi!"

Kyle's eyes glared at first sight of the man and did not even bother to respond to his insincere greetings.

Kyle let go of Angel's hands in dismay. He did not realize that his actions would let her off balance. Kyle watches as James pulls Angel closed, making her face land on his chest. He watches as these two seem to shoot a scene cut out from a romance novel, which he detests unless he is the main lead.

This is the second scene, and it is not making him happy at all.

Kyle's blood is boiling.

It might be the liquor

It might be the chilling night

Or the stress of the day

It might also be a budding jealousy

Of a resounding voice saying," you will never take my place,"

But whatever it is.

It is a strong force that made Kyle pull Angel out of James' arms.

But the latter did not let go,

A fierce exchange of glances came back and forth as neither one of them let go of Angel as if they were playing a tug-of-war.

Angel stands in between, bewildered what is happening as these two handsome men push and pull her.

A cycle on her head.

A whirlwind on her stomach.

Angel did something she did not come here to do,

It is so shocking that both men let her go at once….
