"Only one. Here, have some cubes." The deadrouser handed Ted a tray of sugary cubes and sighed.
"Only one, and you are unable to figure out how to do it?"
"Death doesn't take bribes. You can't reason with it, unless you have something substantial. Besides…"
The cubes did not seem to be poisoned. Just in case they were, Ted had Eknie eat some as well.
If he went down, he would pull everyone down with him.
"The case we are talking about was not documented well enough for any of us to get anything substantial out of it. The witch in question was the Maroon Queen, and we know next to nothing about her. You'd have better luck venturing around the continent in the east, looking for clues there."
"So…"
The magic had worn off by now, leaving Ted with nothing but an ache in his limbs and a bad mood.
It was not any particularly potent witchcraft.
