Ted did not know what he had expected before saying those fateful words. Had he thought that he would crack the shell that Madorn had built around himself? Had he thought that Eknie would have been secretly clinging onto whatever warm feelings she had for him? Or had he thought instead that it was a lost cause and it would be better to deceive the two thirds of the broken trio?
The silence was almost too awkward to be broken. There was a sound of fabric sliding against fabric as Madorn shuffled his feet. Eknie was playing with a patch of dry skin on her lip.
She tugged on it too quickly, with too much force, and a single drop of blood erupted from the sensitive tissue of her lower lip.
The drop fell onto the floor and that was when the silence got broken.
