Frankly, Ted was not terribly interested in Tom's complaints about his children and his grandchildren. The best thing that could be said about the old fellow was that he really heard and remembered everything. That could be an asset.
Nevertheless, it seemed like Tom had entered an alternate state of mind after being threatened with violence. He was not used to having to submit to anyone, but as he now had to bow down to the trio, it somehow broke him and caused him to share all kinds of details - both necessary and unnecessary - about his sorry excuse of a life.
