Chapter 1 - Rebirth

It was dark.

Silent.

And empty.

Then comes pain.

Pain.

Nothing but pain.

And then light. A very blinding bright light.

I've shut my eyes closed but even doing so, all I ever could see were unending white scape.

Then I heard someone whisper my forgotten name.

Speak of it till it became louder and louder. Then it became wails and cries until only screeches and shriek impaired my sense of hearing.

And something broke.

Everything that I thought I've forgotten came to me like flood. A literal flood.

Cold and water came crushing inside my cocoon washing away all my sleepiness. Now I remember everything that happened.

Right after the dark is light. From silent came noise and then, the vast emptiness filled. The nature will always abhor the void and hail the balance, an unending cycle of destruction and creation.

Right after I choose my death and willed my own destiny back on Earth. I got reincarnated in the most peculiar and unexpected way I could ever thought of, an insignificant and detested pest of all, a mosquito.

I don't know how nor did I believe it at first but that is what exactly happened to me. And the most incredible and annoying part of it was, I just couldn't die.

***

The day Vanth Cross got reincarnated.

It happened when I first woke up in this baffling world wet and confused. Everything I saw was gigantic and my body somehow felt funny.

I couldn't move a muscle and I could smell through my head. I could see things in much profound ways, detect color and movement in ways I've never experience before.

Feeling too amazed by my experience, I did not notice the looming shadow coming to me. Then, everything went black.

Like a television shutting down, so sudden and so fast, everything went poof!

Shocked to what just suddenly occurred, I did not even know I died at that time. All I know was, what happened after that.

I was greeted with darkness, silence and emptiness.

Then light, sound and pouring cold water.

So cold that it woke me up from my stupor.

I opened my shut eyes and saw a different place from where I was before. Instead of cook wares, glasses and wooden cabinets, I was welcomed with greenery. Flowers, trees and many plants that I have never encountered before in my life, spread across as far as my eyes could see.

They were so huge that I felt like a tiny insect.

And that last two words woke me up real good.

Since I still couldn't move a muscle and I have such a good eye. Perfectly seeing all color and movement all around me. I tried looking around trying to see what was happening to my body.

'Did I have stroke or what?' I thought since my mouth doesn't move and my eyes felt very funny.

Whenever I try to move them, they go on separate ways making me see everything three hundred sixty degrees and I can't close them no matter how much I tried which slowly making me dizzy and making it much more complicated and painful by the second.

'Breath and calm down.' I said to myself when reality hit me. 'I can't talk. I can't feel my mouth. How am I even breathing? Do I have noses? Why I can't feel the air filling it?'

Slowly my situation was getting more and more confusing though I don't feel alarm, I have never panicked on anything before even at that time when I've lost everything I've had.

What was happening right now was no different.

In fact, the more things keep unfolding, the more I felt it getting comical.

Funny might it all seem to me how my brain was playing weird things and how my body does not function. I know and I remember well, I was perfectly capable before my departure.

'Yes! I remember and my brain. My f***ing brain!'

Realizing, my brain was the only organ that I can currently use. It was working just fine.

I've stop forcing my body to move since that endeavor was totally useless.

I've eased up my eyes, did not try to move nor close them and observe what I can see on my surroundings.

'Eureka!'

That was when I saw, to which I assumed my body.

It has a chitinous back with two transparent wings. An abdomen with striped black and white skin and two long antennas on its head. A huge black eye which reflect my other eye.

I don't know how I'm seeing my own eye as well as the clear blue sky nor do I know how my brain knows that it's my body.

Maybe, just like how I've accepted everything and treated it as it was, my mind easily adapted to my situation.

Beggars can not be choosy after all. It is what I've always believed.

It also bewildered me how I can see my back but not my front body and as I can feel the gravity, I am supposed to be crouching on all four facing down, not up. So, seeing my back was impossible.

I also don't see if I have limbs but at the back of my brain I feel that I have one.

I tried to recall everything on my memory something that might help my situation right now. First, I was a human. Second, I made my own end. Then after that, I woke up on a strange place with gigantic things with no control over my body and then I blacked out.

Finally, waking up again wet and soak in water in a very strange place with huge green plants of different kinds that I don't remember back when I was working in biology and agriculture.

I remember well all of the plants and I know that what I'm seeing now never exist on Earth.

Somehow, I know that I have a body, a different body.

A small, disable and insect body.

'That summed up all things.' Then, without a choice. I resigned to my horrible fate.

Sighing, 'What an ironic thing to happen to a man that doesn't want to live.' I thought while looking back of all the religions on my previous world, Earth, were actually bogus. The end of life is not death but another life nor do people go to heavens and hell.

Life also doesn't just vanish on thin air nor do you meet God at the end of the tunnel. There were no angels singing holy songs but infinite silence. And in-between life and death is the ultimate peace.

Life is a never ending cycle after all.

Science also made it wrong when they assumed that aside from human, no living creature can be sentient just like them. I am the living proof of that but I can't go back now and tell them all of it, can't I?

Philosophy and logic have it right. You can not say what something is, unless you walk a mile with it.

'So most of the things are now established. I am now a mosquito and I got reincarnated along with all my memories from the previous lifetime. I am inhabiting a foreign incapacitated insect body. And lastly, these world is not the world I know, I am certain of it.'

'The only thing that remains that I couldn't figure out is, how on the sh*tting worlds my small insect brain can process all of this thoughts. Does really consciousness lies beyond reality? And how f***ing amazing things are happening to me right now.'

After I recovered from the short surprise on my current life. I started to plan things out. First, I need to learn how to move my body or at least find out if I can really move it. This place is unknown, lots of things do not add up.

Second, I need to know where I am and what kind of world did I reincarnated with. Secure myself and probe if this world inhabit more things I've never encountered. If this world can satiate the boredom I've felt for so long then I'm might as well stay.

And lastly, understand what will happen if I ever decided to depart. If either I am bound here or will I be sent to somewhere else. How I got teleported or something? Was it a different world or a place somewhere in this world?

'First things first. Learn to move my own ass.' I utter to myself.

Since moving my eyes is a no go. I'll go with my hands. Hands that I have no clue where. All I see on three hundred sixty degrees vision is the vast forest, the wide sky and my back.

Though I can feel that I'm standing on all four of my limbs.

I tried to raise my right arm. Nothing happened. I tried my left but to no avail, still no results. I tried to move my legs but still, no movements.

Back when I was human I did not know how I learn how to move my body, no one does. We just sudden know how. Motion is as natural as the beating heart.

Without even thinking about it we can move our body. Once we willed to, it will. It is just that simple and with practice the body can perform complicated actions like dancing, acrobats and variety of sports and arts.

But now moving is struggle and as complicated as following health diets. You want it to happen but it just doesn't.

Then something flash on my mind. I remembered that before the water flooded me, something broke which meant I must have undergone metamorphosis since I am an insect.

And this broken insect body that I inhabit is a new born.

A mosquito's lifespan depends on their gender. A female mosquito can live up to at most two months while a male mosquito can live up to only ten days.

'With luck, ten days before my inevitable demise.' I assumed since I was a man before I reincarnated.

'When things go south, I'll be dinner.' I thought jokingly to myself. I don't mind dying, in fact for me it's a blessing. I don't have to deal with petty little things every living being do.

Hours passed when in the middle of still trying to move a finger or what ever my body has, I felt a familiar and annoying feeling, hunger.

Hunger.

The uncomfortable and painful physical sensation caused by insufficient consumption of dietary energy. An unbeatable enemy of living, a constant reminder of survival.

A mosquito can last four days without eating but I don't think I could last that long nor could I wait that much.

'This doesn't bode well. I have no control over my extremities and my natural enemy is already knocking on the fringes of my stomach.'

'Desperation will slowly eat me from the inside and when that happen, I will be its first victim.'
