Why am I still alive?
I was just fired from my job, I lost my mother two months ago, my bitch of an ex-wife left me a month after that, and on my way to court to get custody of my son, the whole damn world gets bombarded by aliens. Now, I am waking up three months later, hooked up to some machine with most of my body gone. Half of my left arm? Gone. My right arm? Gone completely. My right eye? I wish that was all that was gone. And don't get me started on how I'm even waking up, alive, three months later without my entire lower half after being blown away by one of those hell fire bombs those damn aliens dropped down on us. Needless to say, if I had been born 500 years ago during the dark times then I would have been dead. Though, at this point that didn't sound so bad.
It was one thing to lose damn near my entire body, but… what really shattered my heart was them telling that… well… I really lost everything during that first attack. When I heard that I wanted to cry, but I couldn't. I wanted scream, but I couldn't do that either. Hell, I even wanted to thrash around and destroy every last thing around, but I couldn't do that either… or so I thought.
They gave me exactly 25 hours to grieve before coming back and making me an offer. And that offer, came in the form of a bug. Well, obviously more than just a bug. They said it was some kind of living alien tech that infests a hosts and practically, turns them into a weapon. They were somehow able to reverse engineer it, but the thing was still a big danger. Out of the 132 people that were given the bug before me, 94 died during infection and the rest lost their minds and attacked everything around them like wild animals. Now, it was my turn. I didn't even hesitate because what was my alternative? Besides, if all else fails I'll either pass on to see my son, or at very least get the chance to break everything in sight before I am forced to go see my son. Either way, I win.
So, I let them infect me with the damned thing and to say the least… it hurt like all hell. Listen, whenever someone says there is nothing greater than the pain of loss, kick them right in their teeth. Sure, the pain of loss lasts longer but the pain of an alien techno-parasite infecting your body and forcefully regrowing your limbs bit by bit is another type of hell that I hope I will never have to endure again. But, in the end, it somehow worked. Out of the now 133 people that have been infected with this thing, I was somehow the only one that survived… lucky me I suppose.
I now have a fully functional, though otherworldly looking, body. With my mind intact and my vigor at heights I could have never imagined, I was ready to tear those damn aliens apart. But first, they told me I needed one more thing, besides physical therapy, and mental evaluations. No, one more thing that decide this newfound war. When I asked what it was, they didn't take long at all to show me. Little did I know, or little did they tell me, was that this thing wasn't just a parasite, but a key, or in the bigger thing's case, its heart.
"Oh, hell yes," I breathed with the wickedest grin.
Staring back at me was not those ridiculous ass mechs the military uses. No, this one was way sleeker and a hell of a lot more menacing. It didn't even look like a mech, but more like a giant demon outfitted to be a mech. So much so that it made me wonder if this bigger thing had been alive previously. Obviously, I didn't know the answer but damn it, it was sure as hell about to be now.
So, I ask again. Why am I still alive? Easy. To destroy all the alien bastards that took my son away from me and wreak across their worlds. I was given a second chance to live, and I promise you this, I won't give them to same chance. For I have been knighted out of Hel and I will show them exactly what that means. What evil they have created. I then feel a reverberation within me, coming from the giant thing and resonating with the smaller parasite. I don't know what that meant but it felt like a good sign and a hell of a cosign. I look back up at the demon mech and say, "Sounds like you agree. Well if that's the case then, let's go, Hel Knight!"
