Chapter 2 - The Sprout of a Blue Rose

On the third floor of an apartment in Colorado, USA, 0805

A streak of light shines through half-closed curtains softly landing on a 13-year-old boy, showing an average look although he had a hint of handsomeness mixed into his face though it was very little mind you, with pitch-black hair, almond-shaped eyes, and slightly chapped lips.

As the rays of sunlight reached him. The boy slowly opened his eyes.

The sun's unwelcoming light hits Adrian in the eyes as soon as he wakes up winning a wince from him. Annoyed, he groggily grabbed his phone next to the bed and looks at the time. 8:05 am. Surprised his brain went blank for a moment processing the information before jumping out of bed and dashing to the bathroom like it was a mid-life crisis.

"Shiiiit" Adrian hisses as he brushes his teeth with lightning speed, but stops in the middle of brushing, realizing that it was-tada!-Labor Day and school was tomorrow.

A tch came from his mouth as he realized this, his fear turning to annoyance, it only increased when he realized he got out of bed for no reason. Sighing he reluctantly finished brushing he sluggishly move out of the bathroom already missing the warmth of his bed.

Coming down the stairs Adrian looked to the front door and saw a pair of shoes gone. Surprised he muttered. "She still hasn't come home? God, overtime work must be brutal. Well, on to making breakfast." Yawning, Adrian lazily turned to the kitchen and started making some grape jam toast with eggs and sausages.

The annoyance he had faded away as he slowly began waking up completely as he got moving. Halfway from finishing the meal, footsteps appeared signaling that his stepfather was up, and then from the stairs came out his stepfather's voice. "Oh come on, didn't I say I'D make breakfast in the mornings? Not that I'm complaining or anything though."

Adrian grumbled, " Yeah, lucky you work for home and don't worry about being late then realizing you never had to get ready because it's Labor Day, Dad!"

A snort came from his stepfather, Kim. "Why are you getting angry at me?! I had nothing to do with that! You're becoming more and more like your mother!" Shaking his head he sat down in the dining room. "Hmm, now that you mention it IS Labor day isn't it?" He said absentmindedly as he checked his phone.

Then it was Adrian's turn to shake his head smiling as he did it. Finally, Adrian completed the breakfast he had prepared. All parts of the breakfast, from the eggs to the bread looked delicious. He had been doing it for some time now.

"Now that I think about it, I thought you said you'd wake up super early and go jogging. Guess that extra fat isn't bothering you anymore?" He said teasingly as he set down the two plates of fresh breakfast on the dining table in front of his stepfather. One for Kim the other for himself

"Tch," His stepfather replied curtly without real anger in his voice. "Touche"

Adrian's stepparents both came from Korea, invited by a relative that lived here in America that promised new opportunities. He abruptly came along into their lives about 10 years after they moved here, due to an incident.

His stepparents had adopted him when he was 8 from an orphanage. Considering what Adrian was facing there he was always grateful they did that.

After breakfast, Adrian slumped down in the living room feeling bored. "How about the basketball game that you were watching go?" His stepfather said noticing Adrian's boredom across from the kitchen."The one with against the Golden States and Lakers?"

"Yeah, er, that one." He just smiled at his stepfather, laughing.'' You'd make a terrible comedian with that conversation ability, you know." Embarrassed Adrian's father looked away and focused on quickly finishing his breakfast. "At least I'm trying." He muttered.

Laughing Adrian looked around for the TV remote. There under the table. Grunting he grabbed it from under the table and opened YourTube. When he saw the first video he was shaken. 'What are these Giant Rifts?' 'Breaking News Giant Cosmic Swirls have appeared in the sky. Is it the start of the Apocalypse?' 'We are all gonna die'

Every video had one subject. Giant Rifts in the sky. Suddenly feeling a vibration in his pants Adrian took out his phone.

...It was a government-issued message. Adrian's eyes were drawn to two words. Giant Rifts. "What the...?" He whispered confused out of his mind. "What's wrong?" Kim said from the dining table checking his own phone before he let out is own version Of What the.. except more ...colorful.

Awkward silence rang before Adrian laughed saying he wouldn't tell his stepmother, before standing up.

"I'ma go outside," Adrian said picking up the remote and closing the TV. "H-hold on let me finish and come with you," Kim said in a hurry quickening his pace of eating.

"Just bring it outside." Adrian retorted as he put on sandals and went out the door. Stopping Kim thought for a second before shaking his head muttering something along the lines of honoring the manners set by his ancestors and returned to feverishly eating.
