Chapter 63 - Information Gathering (1)

After yesterday, I don't really know where to start. Yesterday, I told William about the Shift, but obviously he doesn't believe me, honestly, if I was him, I wouldn't either. Let's think about this logically.

Okay, so I need proof that the Shift happened. Only one problem, no way to get it. Even if theoretically going back in time was possible, which as far as we know it's not, chances are that history itself has changed, thus going back in time would just show the pre-Shift history.

Hmm, if anyone is going to give me an idea of where to look next, I know the first person to ask. I'll ask William and Sophia to come to the park we were at yesterday.

Once William and Sophia arrive I tell them, "Okay, so I have an idea of who to visit next about the Shift, but the chances of getting an answer are slim, and the chances of that answer making any sense are around 50/50."

William sarcastically remarks, "Oh great, how many crazies do you know,"

I snarkily respond with, "Way too many, and you're one of them."

I swear I hear Sophia chuckle, but I just shrug it off.

"Okay, well," I say, "Only one problem... I have no idea how to get all of us there."

"Huh, what do you mean?" Sophia asks.

"Well, you see, he kind of lives... in a spatial bubble located on the International Space Station."

"Oh great." They both sigh.

William asks me about why I can't just teleport us there, and I tell him that even I don't have enough MP to teleport three people off the planet. That is not happening.

"Can you call him or something?"

"Sorry William, but I don't have his number, and it's not just like he'll just appear out of thin air."

"Were you talking about me?" Osiris asks from behind us, almost scaring me to death in the process.

"Agh! Why do you always do that!" I scream.

"Because you make it so fun to do."

"Okay, that is just a weird remark." I wonder what personality he has right now.

"Hey Jess, is that the guy you were talking about," Sophia whispers to me, obviously suspicious of him.

"Yeah, he's a bit of of a nutjob, but he's strangely knowledgable about stuff like this," I whisper back.

"You all must be Jess' friends! Welcome, Welcome."

Huh? Seems like he has a pretty serious personality right now, that's good. Well, other than the fact that he just said "welcome" to the people who were here first. I don't know what I'd do if he was acting crazy right now.

"Hey Osiris, where is RUBY?"

"Oh she's tending to the lab right now, I was out here getting some stuff for a new experiment when I thought I heard you."

"Oh... well we do have a question for you, theoretically, would it be possible for the whole world to change in one day? Like everything changing all at once, history, people, etc?"

"I don't think so, doing so would require a tremendous amount of energy... actually now that I think about something weird has been happening recently."

"Huh? What is that?"

"I don't know, it seems around six months ago a weird energy passed over Earth. Nothing of note happened, but there were a couple of strange ripples recorded in space, there are even traces of similar events happening thousands of years ago. However, recently an aftershock of the initial wave washed over the planet again."

"What do you mean by that? Ripples in space?"

"Just what it sounds like, almost like a wave, shaking the fabric of spacetime."

"How do you even know that happened? That isn't the kind of thing we can just see."

"I have my ways... and I'm not telling you, humph!"

"Okay?" Why does he always have to be suspicious at the weirdest times ever?

"Hey, Jess?" Sophia quietly asks me, "Why is this grown man pouting like a child?"

"You learn not to question it, trust me."

Logically speaking, he probably has some way to monitor spacetime utilizing Space magic and Time magic. You never know with this man.

Looking on the bright side, we've got a couple of things to go off of. First, the reason Sophia and William contain at least a trace of memories from before the Shift is through the aftershock the Shift left behind.

Second, the Shift either caused a spike of energy to rush over the Earth or was caused by it. Either one is a possibility. This mysterious energy caused a "ripple in spacetime" as Osiris explains it, possibly referring to the Shift.

Finally, the strangest one I chose not to ask about due to me knowing I won't get anything else out of Osiris, something like the Shift could have possibly happened before. A similar ripple in spacetime has evidence of having happened thousands of years ago.

This means that this Shift isn't the first one, and possibly not the last.

"Thanks for the hel-." I start to thank Osiris, but looking over my shoulder I see he's already gone.

I really want to find out who he really is one day, but that has to be put on hold for now. I need to figure out more important stuff out first, like this whole problem with the Shift. He's been helpful so far, but he is still so suspicious, and his identity is a mystery. All I know is he is a globally funded scientist-magician that lives in space. Yeah, just a normal everyday thing.

Well, for now we've gotten all the information we need. Let's just head back and get something to eat, I'm starving.
