"Just use your head" I really hated it whenever she bragged about something, but yet I admired her smartness and the way she was able to get out of a lot of trouble just by speaking her way out of it,I really envied her because of this,I mean I I'm her brother,why am I not able to get out trouble using my mouth,but I guess some children had to have some special talent while others just remained without any.
"And I don't use my head" I said as we entered the hallway now.
"You do but in situations like this…"she shook her head.
"I get it" I said trying to hide my annoyance."Just go to your class"
"Ok see you later" she said and quickly walked off in the opposite direction.
"Thank God I have a sister like her" I said and started to make my way to my class.
The pain in my leg had lessened now but I was still limping to avoid reviving the terrible pain no it felt more like a sting,but I was glad that my leg had not fallen off on our way to school.
As I got near our class door I started hearing little hearing voices down the hallway, maybe it was just some teachers I thought,but as I was about to open the door to my class I heard a loud scream come from the same direction, startled by that of screaming I started limping down the hallway to find out what could have caused such screaming,as I got closer I could hear many whispering voices and they were all standing at the door that led outside,I wasn't able to know what see what was causing all the commotion because many students were standing there and it was surprising that they were all my classmates.
"Excuse me" I tried to get through but it was of no use with my leg.
I thought of pushing my way through but that would only make my leg hurt even more because pushing my way through meant that all my feet had to be on the floor and that would really hurt,I didn't know what to do now I just stood there why the people there were speaking,but I couldn't get a grasp on why everyone was all clustered here,I even tried asking those who were at the back but it was of no use because they were even struggling to see what was happening,I stood there the curiosity building up inside me was uncontrollable now and my leg was beginning to hurt more now,I wanted to return to the class and stretch my leg, maybe Chloe would be there,she doesn't like getting involved in things like this I thought, but when I tried to walk to the class I couldn't,it was as if my mind had agreed to forget about whatever was causing that clustering but my body still wanted to know, this was strange because my body and mind were at war now.
Without minding about my hurt leg I dashed in to the crowd,I was planning to push anybody who was on my way out of my way but surprisingly there was an open space for me,some of them were already leaving and I had I made a big mistake by dashing in like that,I was upfront now and what my eyes had caught first was very disturbing but I was about to fall on it now,but then I felt someone hold me by arm,a very soft hard,and even without looking I knew they belonged to a female, Chloe I thought, but when she pulled back to my feet I didn't see any Chloe.
"You don't want to fall on that do you?" she pointed.
The sight was terrible, Bryan one of the boys in our class lay on the floor lifeless,and both of his legs looked like they were ripped off by a hungry beast.
"How did that happen?" I asked staring directly into her eyes,I haven't seen her before and maybe that was why I was behaving like this,she was breathtaking,her hair was just like the colour of fire but her eyes when I looked through them looked like the blue ocean in which I was drowning now, what was I doing? I wasn't supposed to be staring at her in this situation,I quickly turned my gaze back to Bryan but I guess she noticed I was staring into her eyes because she tried to hide a blush after I looked away.
"I don't actually know, but they said that a wild animal attacked him" she had a really soothing voice.
Wild animals? I have never heard of any wild animal attacking anybody around here before,I even went into the forest sometimes but still I had never seen any of these wild animals talk more of it attacking me.
"Bryan" I sighed.
"Was he your friend?"
He wasn't my friend but it was really painful to hear that someone you knew and saw everyday had died.
"Not really" my leg twitched now like I shouldn't have said that."Aww!" I tried to keep standing but the pain was too much and I soon found myself on the ground rubbing my leg.
"Are you okay?" she slowly bent down surprised by what was happening to me now.
"No I'm not okay!" I shouldn't have screamed that loud.
"Mike!" I heard Chloe call from the other side of the whole, she must have heard me scream and she had quickly rushed to my aid."What's wrong?"she knelt down beside me, now I had two girls at both of my side.
I was too busy groaning to answer her question so the girl that I just met did that.
"We were standing here talking, when he suddenly fell down rubbing his leg"
"Help me lift him" Chloe said grabbing both of my hands while the other girl grabbed both of my legs,I really felt embarrassed as both of them carried me through the hallway, but there was nothing I could do.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked with a groan.
"The nurse"
Nurse? the last time I checked we didn't have any nurse or did the school newly employ one, for some reason I didn't think going to a nurse was a nice idea,but when I opened my mouth in protest I fell into a slumber instead.
I opened my eyes to see two blurry faces looking at me.
"Is he awake?" I heard a familiar voice.
"I think so" that was Chlo's voice.
I slowly rubbed my eyes to see clearly, the last people I saw before I dozed off.
"He is awake now"
"What happened?" I asked slowly getting off my back,I was on a hospital bed now.
"We took you to a nurse" Chloe said.
"When did the school employ a nurse?"
"We are not in the school"
"We are not?" I looked at the wall clock in the room and discovered that school had dismissed since an hour ago,I also discovered that they hadn't been here up to this time,they had dropped me here went back to school and had come back after school had dismissed,but I didn't bother to ask them that.
"Yes"
"What about Aurora?"
"She went home"
She went home, forgetting me here at least she had waited for me to wake up so that we could go home together.
"I'm the one that told her to go" she said like she has just read my thoughts."I told her that I would bring you home when you woke up"
I was entirely satisfied by that answer, but I liked that Aurora trusted Chloe well enough to listen to her in situations like this.
"Do you need anything?"
"Yes I'm a bit thirsty"
She quickly left to go get me some water leaving me alone with the girl that I met in the morning.
"How's your leg now?" she asked.
I almost got lost in her eyes again,then I looked down to avoid looking at her eyes."I think it's better now" I said lifting my left leg, the pain was almost gone now.
"Ok" she said quickly turning her gaze to the window.
"What's your name"
"Emma...Emma Jones"
"I'm Mike" I said feeling ashamed to tell her my last name and I felt releived that she didn't ask either.
"Nice to meet you Mike" she smiled.
"It's my pleasure….Are you in my class?"
"Yes I'm new"
Today was her first day in school and she had already started it with that horrible scene this morning,I felt really sorry for Bryan, but I still wondered what type of animal did that to him.
"I have to go now" she said sliding the small bag she was with on her shoulder.
"So soon?" I didn't want her to leave yet,I wanted her to stay and tell her a little about herself but it looked like she had somewhere to go.
"Yes, I really have to go do some stuffs" I really liked the way she said the word stuffs.
"Ok then"
"Bye" she said and left afterwards Chloe came back with a glass of water.
If it hadn't been for Chloe I wasn't sure I would have been able to make it home,the pain was almost gone now and the nurse had told me that it was just a minor fracture that would heal with time,but right now my condition of walking was worse I could barely limp talk more of walking, the only thing I was able to do was jumping with my right leg, Chloe wanted to carry me home on her back but I had refused because of the people that were there, when we got out on the road where they were just few people I had allowed her to carry me, because jumping like that was really wearing me out.Aurora couldn't control her laughter when she saw me on Chloe's back.
"Did you climb the hill with him on your back?"
That wasn't possible I had to come down when we reached the hill but Chloe was below me pushing me up whenever I felt like falling.
"Aurora can't you see your brother is in pain" I heard mom say and then she was out in the front porch.
I spent the remaining hours of the day on my bed, Chloe had to go home immediately so that she wouldn't get her parents worried and that made those remaining hours boring,lunch and dinner were brought to me on my bed which I didn't like because I had to yell a couple of times before Aurora would bring me water.
It was already 8:00 pm in the night and Aurora was helping mom in the kitchen I guessed,I tried to think of what had happened to Bryan,what type of animal would attack someone take only the legs of the person and leave the rest of the body? Just then a very strong wind blew my window open,how was that possible? Those windows were locked,I looked out the window until the wind stopped then I turned to call Aurora to come lock them again but I was dumbfounded by what was floating over me now.
A shadow ghost that didn't seem to have legs,I swallowed really hard.
