Chapter 10 - Survival Equipment

Monday, all we did for the weekends is relax at the quarters, only getting out to eat. It was a good weekend for us, relaxing throughout every hour, talking to each other about our thoughts so far in this place.

The light is still off, i stay lying down on my bed. Staring at the pitch black ceiling of my room.

"Well that was a good weekend." Oliver suddenly spoke through the darkness, startling me.

"Yeah." I replied to him.

"Today's the day where we have to bring these survival bags they said. Maybe we will learn how to use these things." Josh reminded.

"Josh can you check the schedule?" Josh reads the schedule.

"Says there's no lunch, actually there's no lunch for any of these days anymore?"

"What?" Oliver jumps out of bed to read the schedule.

"Oh come on,

The lights shine brightly, at the switch, Josh stood near the switch with his hand still on it, yawning.

The first bell ring of the week began, the sound already getting quite annoying.

"Guess it's breakfast now, and bring your bags for today by the way." Josh reminded. We grabbed the bags, even the pair of dirt picks and it's rope satchel.

Wearing the bag, it's moderately heavy but manageable, i placed the dirt picks in the bag along with the rope. Making our way to the cafeteria to have our supper before the class today, the other students have their bags as well.

Just like the week before, we await the food. Back to the same food we had before friday.

I started eating, also back to the slow pace.

Ringing bells ordered us to our classroom. Now finished with this meal i head along with Oliver and Josh.

We sat in the same place as before, close to the door. The teacher was already there waiting for us and the rest of the class. As everyone sat down, the room went silent.

"This is the 2nd week of your training in the explorers building, this week will be for all of you to interact with the equipment I explained last week. This room isn't fit to interact with your things however, so let's move somewhere more suitable." After he spoke, the wall behind him split into two. Retracting to both sides, revealing a second room. A white room with tables and chairs, like the weaponry classroom but all the tables faced front.

"Alright everyone, pick which table you want to put your bags on and start examining your equipment." Everyone stood up, with shocked expressions on their faces with this unexpected room.

We went down to the room, once everyone got inside, the walls moved back, closing once again.

Oliver Josh and I found a table at the back of the class, I sit down with them, putting my bag next to me instead.

"In this class you will learn how to use the equipment in your bags. To start we will first look at the mask," In front of me, square holes formed on our tables. Out came gas masks, equipped with the canisters as well. "Putting on the mask is easy, just put the straps behind your head and that's it you're wearing the mask now." The teacher demonstrated, putting the straps behind his own head, pulling on a small strap, tightening it on his head.

After demonstrating, we attempted to do it ourselves. Putting the straps behind my head was a little difficult but I managed to wear the mask correctly, I can still hear the classroom and the other students through this thing, I also hear my breath as I breathe into this thing.

"This mask is comfortable to wear, and you can even speak with this thing, but my voice does sound deeper or raspier because of it." Oliver commented, his voice still audible.

"Alright class, now for your fans. First just turn the fan you wish to remove clockwise for a couple of seconds and pull once you feel the fan come lose. To put the new fan in just turn it counter clockwise while gently pushing into your mask, continue turning it until you feel it stop and you can no longer turn it." The teacher explained. I followed what he said, turning one of my fans clockwise for some time. After feeling it come lose i pull it out, in my hand is the fan, and the systems inside.

"When you need to change the fans and both are damaged, remove one damaged fan first and insert the new one in it's place. The slot that held the damaged fan will automatically close shut to prevent toxic air in. If you remove both then you will no longer receive oxygen supply. Suffocating to death." He explained.

My vision wasn't obscured by the mask, I still saw clearly through the 2 lenses, after looking around with the mask I removed the mask, placing it on the desk.

"Next is the radio, it's simple to use. All you have to do is press and hold this button at the top of it, and speak into the radio. The radios will immediately connect to the nearest radio to it. The group commander however has a special chip inside it, this chip when detected by the radio will immediately connect the radio to the group commander."

Pulling out the radio from the bag, Josh's voice immediately came in.

"Hey Edmund, what's up?" Josh jokingly asked. His voice on the radio was similar to his normal voice, with no static or any hindrance to the output of his voice on the radio. For the flashlight, just press the button on the flashlight and it will turn on. Next, the temperature reader, since you did languages and archaeology then he must have said that it looks similar to the temp reader right? The difference is the screen on top of the language reader with the smaller screen embedded into the temp reader. To scan there's a little switch here, just flick it up and it will read the surrounding area's temperature. The one used for people however, it operated similarly but differentiated by it's red color. To turn the temp off, just flick it back down."

The teacher pulls out a sleeping bag, an unrolled sleeping bag like the one he showed before.

"It is rather easy to fold it back as when you roll it, it will immediately stick together until unrolled. At the top is a zipper, unzipping it you may fully climb inside and feel the warmth of the sleeping bag. Flares can be found in your bag, light then by yanking the string at the bottom of it. I already demonstrated how to use the canisters," 2 canisters emerged from the hole. One water and one food. "These so it's time for you to try doing it by yourselves."

I try to recall how he removed the tank, he twisted it like the fans, then yanked it to check if they are in place.

I grab the wire that holds the canisters and insert one of the canisters on it, twisting it gradually getting tighter and tighter. Until the canister was stuck into place. I yanked on the canister, making sure that it's locked into place. Now time to reverse what I did, twisting the canister I feel it get more and more loose from the wire it was attached on. With a little pull I detached the canister and the wire.

"Since this day is for using the equipment in your related to survival, medical, communication, navigation, and weapon related equipment will be demonstrated and you will have your chance of using it or interacting with it on their classes. Next week is your final week here. You will be required to use all equipment in your backpack in a simulated brownlands environment." The teacher explained.

The bell rang, muffled because of the wall.

"And that concludes our class today. Do continue tinkering and using your equipment on the weekends or after classes. Dismissed." The wall began opening behind us, letting us out for dinner. We left the room, stepping up to the door.

Outside we walk to the cafeteria to have our daily dinner.

The trays go down in front of us, giving us our dinner. We started eating, again staying silent as we munched our food. The atmosphere was filled with chatter from the other students, but it didn't bother me.

Finishing our last bites, the last thing to do now is sleep for tomorrow.

Out of the cafeteria door after finishing dinner, we pass the glass corridor, the outside, dark as nighttime came. The lights form buildings and the street below illuminating the city.

Back inside our room we wasted no time getting ready to sleep. Josh turned off the light once we got in our beds.

"That room was surprising." Josh said.

"Indeed it did." Oliver replied.

Silence soon followed, everyone going to sleep. Closing my eyes, the 1st day of the 2nd week ends and tomorrow shall begin.
