I wake up, greeted with the light from the window. Light of the city, a beautiful sight.
Josh and Oliver too were awake, yawning. Josh turns on the light, shining the room. At the foot of my bed is a backpack, like the backpack they talked about, attached to it is a sleeping bag. Inside were the equipment talked about yesterday, and medical equipment like bandages, painkillers in bottles, and the food capsules tucked in with water capsules. All looking new, ready to be used. The equipment was organized with the medical stored in the pockets in the middle of the bag and food stored at the bottom the rest are stored above. Zipped pockets on the front also carried extra fans and gas masks in case ours is damaged.
"Hey what do we do with these bags." Oliver asked.
"Dunno, best just leave em there." Josh replied.
I jump out of bed, what is the schedule for today. First breakfast, then medical, after that lunch and medical again, the last one here is dinner.
"Edmund, what's for today?" Oliver inquired to me.
"Medical, and we have breakfast, lunch, to dinner."
"Let me see." I hand the schedule to Oliver. Reading it for a few seconds.
He hands the schedule back to me, putting it back. The bell rang suddenly.
"Alright, i guess it's breakfast." We head outside of our door, seeing the others as well.
"Alright students, you may already know the drill for today. From today forward until we have to leave the building, all of you must walk to your places by yourselves. Head to the cafeteria and head to your classrooms by yourselves. One thing to note, since i will not guide all of you anymore. Once you hear the bell while in the cafeteria, it's time for class. Understood?" The trainer that led us to this building from the start asked.
"Yes sir." We all reply in unison. The trainer walks inside the elevator.
"Alright, it's time for us to part ways for now. In 3 weeks we will leave this place to head to an expansion base where all explorers return to. Good luck to you all." The doors close just as he stopped speaking. After leaving, all students walk along the corridor of glass. Into the cafeteria.
We sat on vacant tables, Oliver, Josh and I still sticking together.
The arms descended down with the trays. The food now were toast, coffee, and scrambled egg. Food again was uncommon and only given sparingly.
"Thank god we joined the explorers, the food is so good." Oliver chattered, with a satisfied face as he ate.
Eating the food, it was delicious. Full of flavor unlike the bread of before.
Finishing the light breakfast, arms came down retrieving the finished empty plates. A bell rang signalling us to head to our new class.
"Alright, let's go." Josh said. All of us were now finished eating. Headed to the other door, we looked at the signs. Finding a classroom that said medical.
Students in front of us walked into the medical room, knowing which room it was before us. Following them we take a seat closest to the door. On the seats all we had to do now was wait for the class.
The entire class found their seats whispering to one another while the teacher wasn't there yet.
"Alright then, this is the medical class. Here you will learn on first aid, and how to perform it in the outside environment." The teacher announced to the class, silencing everyone. Behind him, a screen similar to the one in survival class. It showed an explorer, his insignia did not have binoculars but had an insignia resembling bandages.
"From the tasks you will uphold as part of your assigned exploration groups. There will be multiple medics, specialize to quickly perform first aid on any injured explorer." The picture shifts to the bag of the medic, inside it contained medical supplies and only medical supplies.
"The medic's bag will be comprised of an assortment of medical supplies from bandages, syringes, painkillers, temp reader used for people rather than the environment, a special device that can scan the body of any injured explorer to find broken bones or any internal trauma, and medicine, the medicine now though is only for diseases known. No intel says that diseases dwelling in the city are reported in the outside, but in case that will happen, then the medics will be ready."
The screen changes to a picture of a group of explorers, all near tents, small tents that can hold a couple of explorers each, with guards standing nearby.
"Due to new intelligence, the cold wind of the outside is only getting worse. For this, our systems and sleeping bags with heating systems may not be enough. And because of this new knowledge, the research department of the city academy, has made a tent that can be quickly rolled out for use or quickly revert back for transportation. Each exploration group is comprised of 100 explorers and for this, 15 of them will be medics. The tents can hold 10 explorers each and for this 10 will be carrying the special tents. The tent also has the capability of self repairing, so unless the tent takes excessive damage then it can still be used. This means you won't be sleeping on the cold ground but instead have small tents to rest on. The medics will be handling the most weight, not only physically with the extra medical equipment and the tent but also due to their responsibility, to save your lives."
The picture changes, tents inside a cave, cave of a mountain.
"To maximize safety and warmth, you can't just camp anywhere. You need to find places to hide in, best option can be a cave, but it all boils down to the temperature of the environment. If the area has a warmer temperature than the rest or below the rising temp we see. Then you may set up camp there, but you also must remain vigilant, temperature can change rapidly. Open fields are risky as heavy winds can begin and temp changes are sudden. But if given no other choice like a valley, a cave, or hole somewhere, maintain the greatest vigilance."
A new picture shows on the screen, 2 red circles planted on the picture, one with many black spots and one with one black spot.
"When a person gets lost or is separated from the group. Remember, you have a tracker. The tracker will show you the location of the group commander, and the commander can also see you as he or she has eyes on everyone to ensure nobody is lost. When you lose your tracker however." The doctor pulls out a red flare stick.
"Light the flares up and they can see it from miles away." He puts them back behind the podium.
"Now, it's time for us to talk about the mask and what to do in the event the mask breaks." The man takes out a gas mask.
"It's common knowledge that you remove it, of course." The man laughs, the rows of students laugh as well, quickly dissipating to listen.
"First, remove the mask immediately and get the spare mask in your bag, if you don't have any then the supplier of the group will have spares. It is important that you will hold your breath the entire time, breathing in huge amounts of the toxic air will guarantee your death." Putting it on his face, he gets 2 capsules with wires stuck on them.
"Oh yeah, you can speak through the mask normally. We managed to make that a feature so communication isn't hindered." The man spoke, as if he didn't wear the mask. No muffles or anything. Josh and Oliver were also surprised at this sudden fact of the mask. "Once you remove the mask, you can remove the canisters of the old mask and attach it to your new one, it will automatically close itself when detached, keeping it ready to use."
As he prepared to speak again, the bells ring.
"Well, now it's lunch. You have an hour to eat, when we come back, our topic will be about being safe to climb. Wait climb? The whole class of students all began mumbling after he said climbing.
"Yes climbing, now it's time for you to eat." The students quickly walked out the door. We moved to the cafeteria, everyone taking their seats.
Sitting on a table the arms went down to give us our lunch. Sliced pieces of chicken, water, and mashed potatoes on the side with corn and carrot slices on the side. So much food, it's almost shocking to see these in such amounts given to us, do they keep an amount of the produce?
"Damn, i feel like a king for eating this. I guess this is the luxury we get for risking our lives to explore the outside." Joked, stuffing his mouth with the mouth watering feast lying in front of us.
