Chapter 70 - Çhapter 71: The temple's Grip

Chapter 71: The Temple's Grip

The entrance to the temple yawned before them like the mouth of a slumbering beast. Ancient vines crawled over its surface, their gnarled tendrils pulsating faintly as though the temple itself were alive.

Natasha and Alison hesitated at the threshold. The air inside was cold, unnatural, and carried the faint metallic tang that had haunted their journey.

"Whatever's in there doesn't want us to leave," Alison muttered, gripping his blade.

"And we're not leaving without the artifact," Natasha replied firmly, though a shadow of doubt flickered in her eyes.

They stepped inside, the light from outside quickly swallowed by the oppressive darkness. The walls were lined with more carvings, their details illuminated faintly by bioluminescent moss that seemed to pulse in rhythm with the whispers.

The Hall of Echoes

As they ventured deeper, the whispers grew louder, weaving together into an unsettling melody.

"Do you hear that?" Natasha whispered, her eyes scanning the shadows.

"Yeah. Voices," Alison replied, his tone wary.

The walls seemed to close in, the carvings almost shifting under the dim light. Figures on the walls were now posed in anguish, their faces twisted in pain, their hands reaching outward as though begging for release.

Natasha paused, her gaze fixed on one particular carving. It depicted a lone figure standing before the massive tree they had seen in the clearing. Unlike the others, this figure wasn't in agony. They stood tall, their hand placed on the tree's trunk, their eyes carved into slits of glowing stone.

"Look at this," she said, tracing her fingers over the figure.

Alison joined her, studying the scene. "They don't look afraid," he said. "It's like… they've accepted something."

"Or been consumed," Natasha murmured.

The moment her fingers touched the glowing stone eyes, a deep rumble echoed through the temple. The ground beneath them trembled, and the walls seemed to shudder.

"Natasha!" Alison yelled as the carvings on the walls began to writhe, their anguished figures coming to life.

The figures peeled themselves from the walls, their stone bodies twisting and cracking as they stepped into the corridor. Their glowing eyes fixed on Natasha and Alison, and the whispers crescendoed into a deafening roar.

"Run!" Alison shouted, grabbing Natasha's arm.

They sprinted down the corridor, the living carvings lurching after them. The walls seemed to stretch and twist, the temple shifting as if it were alive, trying to trap them.

The Chamber of the Heart

They burst into a massive chamber at the end of the corridor, the air thick with an ancient energy that prickled their skin. At the center of the chamber stood a pedestal, and on it rested an artifact unlike anything they had ever seen.

The artifact was a small, jagged shard of crystal, its surface swirling with a faint green light. Vines snaked around the pedestal, pulsating in unison with the glow.

"That's it," Natasha said, her voice filled with awe and trepidation.

As they approached, the whispers returned, this time clearer, more insistent.

"Take it," the voices urged. "Join us. Become one with the heart of the jungle."

Natasha reached for the artifact, but Alison grabbed her wrist. "Wait. You don't know what it will do."

"I don't think we have a choice," Natasha said, her gaze fixed on the artifact. "It's the only way forward."

Before Alison could respond, the chamber trembled, and a massive root burst through the ground, coiling around the pedestal. The root twisted and expanded, forming into the shape of a humanoid figure with glowing green eyes.

"You seek the heart," the figure rumbled, its voice echoing through the chamber. "But the heart does not give. It takes."

Natasha and Alison stepped back, their weapons drawn.

"We're not leaving without it," Natasha said, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes.

The figure tilted its head, the green light in its eyes flaring. "Then prove your worth. Survive."

With a deafening roar, the figure lunged at them, its massive arms swinging with unnatural speed. Natasha and Alison dove to opposite sides, narrowly avoiding the attack.

"Go for the pedestal!" Alison shouted, slashing at the figure's arm. His blade bit into the root-like flesh, but it quickly regenerated, vines wrapping around the wound.

Natasha sprinted toward the pedestal, dodging the roots that erupted from the ground to block her path. She leaped over one, rolling as another lashed out, and reached the artifact.

As her fingers closed around the shard, a surge of energy shot through her body, and the whispers screamed in unison. The figure let out a roar of pain, its form unraveling as the chamber began to collapse.

"Natasha!" Alison yelled, running toward her.

She turned, the artifact glowing brightly in her hand. "We have to get out of here!"

Together, they sprinted toward the exit, the temple crumbling around them. The walls cracked, the ceiling caved in, and the whispers faded into a low, mournful wail.

They emerged into the jungle just as the temple collapsed entirely, a cloud of dust and debris billowing into the air.

Natasha and Alison stood in silence, catching their breath. The artifact pulsed faintly in Natasha's hand, its glow a reminder of the power they had unleashed.

"What now?" Alison asked, his voice heavy with exhaustion.

Natasha looked at the shard, a mix of determination and uncertainty in her eyes. "We find out what this thing really is. And we finish what we started."

The jungle around them was still, as if holding its breath, waiting for the next move.
