Chapter 6 - chapter 6 into the corporate world 2

Days turned into weeks, and Natasha threw herself into her work at NeoGaming Corp, all the while keeping her true mission hidden. By day, she handled her mundane data entry tasks, but by night, she dove into the labyrinth of NeoGaming's network. She studied internal emails, poured over obscure project files, and listened intently to the snippets of conversation that floated through the office. Piece by piece, she began to uncover the intricate web of operations at the company. And hidden within that web were shadows—secrets that no one wanted to talk about.

The deeper Natasha dug, the clearer it became that something wasn't right with Jungle Quest. Reports of unusual activity were buried in confidential documents. Bugs that didn't align with typical errors. Glitches that weren't just random, but deliberate. And most hauntingly, mentions of players reporting "strange experiences" just before mysteriously abandoning the game altogether.

One evening, after most of the staff had left for the day, Natasha noticed a faint light still glowing from the corner office on the top floor. It was Alison Drake's office—the elusive CEO who oversaw every aspect of the company's flagship game. Natasha had spent weeks wondering how to approach Alison, knowing she held the answers Natasha desperately needed. This might be her only chance.

Her heart pounded as she walked toward the office, her steps echoing in the empty hallway. She paused at the door, hesitating for a moment before raising her hand to knock. Before she could lose her nerve, she tapped gently.

"Come in," Alison's voice called out, crisp and authoritative.

Natasha stepped inside, trying to steady her breathing. Alison was seated at her desk, surrounded by piles of documents and a laptop displaying complex game development code. She glanced up, her sharp features reflecting a mixture of curiosity and annoyance.

"Can I help you?" Alison asked, her tone brisk and businesslike.

"Ms. Drake," Natasha began, her voice steady despite the fear bubbling inside her. "I'm Natasha—one of the new hires. I need to talk to you about Jungle Quest. It's urgent."

Alison's brow furrowed slightly. "I'm very busy. If this is about a work issue, please schedule a meeting with my assistant."

"It's not a work issue," Natasha said quickly. "It's about my brother, Alex. He's missing. He disappeared while playing Jungle Quest."

Alison's pen froze mid-air. For a moment, the room was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioning. Alison's expression softened ever so slightly, but her eyes remained guarded.

"I'm sorry to hear that," Alison said carefully. "But I'm not sure how I can help. Jungle Quest is just a game."

"I don't think it is," Natasha said, her voice gaining strength. She stepped forward, placing a folder on Alison's desk. "I've been looking into this for weeks. There's something wrong with the game. I believe it's trapping players."

Alison's eyes narrowed as she opened the folder. Inside were screenshots of Alex's in-game journal, which Natasha had pulled from his computer. The journal contained cryptic notes about hidden areas, strange characters, and places that weren't part of the official game map. There were also reports Natasha had found of other players who had gone missing under similar circumstances. She had compiled it all, every clue pointing to the same chilling conclusion.

Alison's face remained unreadable as she sifted through the evidence. "These journal entries," she murmured, her tone softer now. "Your brother wrote these?"

Natasha nodded. "He was trying to map out hidden areas that don't appear in the game's design specs. I think he found something—or maybe something found him."

"This is… troubling," Alison admitted, her professional façade slipping for the first time. She leaned back in her chair, the weight of the situation evident in her expression. "But you need to understand something, Natasha. If word of this gets out, it could destroy NeoGaming Corp. We're already facing financial challenges. A scandal like this would be the end."

"I'm not here to ruin your company," Natasha said firmly. "I just want my brother back. That's all I care about. If you help me, I'll keep this between us."

Alison stared at her for a long moment, her gaze sharp and calculating. Finally, she nodded. "Alright. We'll work together to find your brother. But we have to be careful—very careful. If anyone finds out what we're doing, it could be disastrous for both of us."

Relief flooded Natasha's chest, mingled with a renewed sense of determination. She had an ally now, someone with the power to help her navigate the dangerous waters ahead. But she also knew this was only the beginning. Whatever secrets Jungle Quest held, uncovering them would be a perilous journey.

Over the next few days, Natasha and Alison worked in secret, meeting late at night in Alison's office or communicating through encrypted emails. Alison granted Natasha access to the deeper layers of the game's code and server logs—areas that only a handful of people in the company were allowed to see.

The more they uncovered, the stranger things became. There were entire sections of code that didn't match the game's official architecture. These sections were intricate, almost organic in their complexity, as if they had evolved on their own. Alison explained that no one on her team had written this code—it had simply appeared during the later stages of development.

"It's almost like the game is alive," Natasha said one night, staring at the screen.

Alison's lips pressed into a thin line. "AI that self-generates isn't unheard of, but this… this is different. It's beyond anything we've ever seen."

They also discovered logs of player activity that didn't make sense. Dozens of players, including Alex, had entered areas of the game that weren't supposed to exist. These areas weren't on the official map, and there were no portals or quests leading to them. It was as if the game had created its own secret world.

Natasha's fear deepened when they found a pattern in the player logs. Every person who had entered these hidden areas had eventually gone offline—and never returned.

"It's like they vanished," Natasha said, her voice trembling.

"We need to find out what's in those areas," Alison said. "And fast."

As they delved deeper, the stakes grew higher. One night, Alison received a message on her private server. The sender was anonymous, but the content was chilling: "Stop digging, or you'll regret it."

Alison showed the message to Natasha, her expression grim. "Someone knows what we're doing."

"Who?" Natasha asked, panic creeping into her voice.

"I don't know," Alison admitted. "But whoever it is, they're watching us."

Despite the warning, Natasha refused to back down. Alex was still out there, and she wasn't going to abandon him. But as they prepared to take their investigation to the next level, Natasha couldn't shake the feeling that they were being drawn into something far bigger—and far more dangerous—than they had ever imagined.
