"Finally.." Jungkook almost moaned from his ravenous need as he felt the fresh batch of harvested blood mix with his insides the next day as he took huge gulps from his container. Saturday was all but a blur to him – usually he was more productive, but the encounter with you the previous night had left him so unsure of himself, that it was 8am the next Sunday morning that he finally came to his rightful senses. Normally, he wouldn't ever overeat more than his fill as overeating tended to cause great discomfort for Vampires, but he found himself sitting on the edge of his four-poster bed; staring at his reflection in the mirror while drunkenly guzzling several pints of blood and not being able to get your face out of his mind. The sensation of your lips moulding with his – the way you looked at him right when he kissed you, the fire inside him that yearned for more of you than he knew he was allowed; and the way he had never seen a human being look at him in such terror when he roared at you to leave.
"She must have been so terrified of me…" he found himself filling his mind with you all day long, wondering why on earth he was so concerned with the feelings and emotions of his personal assistant when he couldn't even feel those things himself – or could he? As Jungkook forced himself to get up to go for his usual Sunday walk in the woods around his house, he remembered the euphoria that filled his body when your skin came into contact with his. A warm, loving and frightful sense of acceptance flowed through him that both dazzled and dizzied him like a million stars in the night sky. Having been around for the best part of 400 years, Jungkook knew a thing or two about human emotions, despite never being able to experience them first-hand. He knew the dictionary definition of all the emotions and traits that humans could feel or possess, for humans always somewhat fascinated him; especially as a younger Vampire. He would watch them from afar, wondering what it would be like to be born with life, a beating heart and have hot blood naturally passing through his veins. Humans were social creatures, and they thrived best when in the company of other humans that accepted them, but he often found himself wondering "Are Vampires really that different?"
As he strolled through the woods, he recalled his parents teaching him and his two sisters about the world of humans from a young age – how his mother taught him about having empathy for them, and how his father taught him about the importance of always distancing himself from allowing interpersonal relationships with them; in fear of letting them get too close and familiar – for obvious reasons. As he continued his walk, he also recalled the conversation that he had with his parents just a mere few years ago; the somewhat heated argument about Jungkook's decision to refuse an arranged marriage.
"Do you think you have the luxury of falling in love like humans do? You're the Prince of this Eternal Kingdom; the first of your name – and you will marry someone who we see fit to carry on our royal line!" his father had snarled in his face upon Jungkook disagreeing with his proposal of an arranged marriage. He knew his father thought of him as foolish and incompetent in that sense, but he also knew that his father was more than proud of him – having carried on the family business and creating a new and improved way for vampires to peacefully live side by side with humans; not only keeping their hunger in check, but the research carried out at the many worldwide facilities helped cure and solve the thousands illnesses and problems that came along with the gift of mortality, with the blessing of human life.
As Jungkook reached the centre of the woods where the river flowed in between the many tall trees that were still as old and beautiful as Jungkook, he found his thoughts wandering back to you. He caught himself asking questions like "Does she…will she be at work tomorrow? Should I call her and apologise? Should I just act as if nothing happened? What does she think of me now?" he lamented, having never worried about such things he would have previously considered to be trivial and a waste of his time. Jungkook battled back and forth with himself, having typed out an email to you countless times to address his somewhat feral behaviour – but deleting his words before he could bring himself to press the send button. Had it been anyone else, he would have just fired you and sent you on your way, so why were you so different? "She's damn good at her job. She does what I ask, when I ask her to – and it's to a high standard. No one could replace her" he knew, but Jungkook had also been keeping you around him for reasons that weren't quite clear to him yet. It was almost as if you had sparked a childlike curiosity in him, and the 'feelings' you managed to elicit from him? No one had ever been able to cause such fiery passion to erupt within his shallow soul before.
Jungkook sighed, looking up to the treetops as he observed a flock of birds midflight over his head underneath the sun, trying to peek out from behind the clouds. "Please, (Y/N). Don't be frightened of me…I'm not a monster…" he wished as if he were praying to a God he knew didn't exist, hoping with all he had that you would be in the office, come tomorrow morning.
Apart from your boss pulling you into a hot, heated kiss and then screaming like a banshee for you to get out of his house – your weekend was much the same as it always was. After you arrived home, still in floods of tears; you collapsed on your sofa in your little apartment that you could have probably fit a thousand times inside Jungkooks' manor. You didn't leave your sofa for any other reason other than to go to the bathroom, or to feed your big, fluffy, black cat – Mugsy, whom you always showered with love and affection, only for him to shower you with disdain as he looked back at you with his big dark saucers, hissing at you and hungrily chowing down on his food. Still, you loved him nonetheless – for he was an outcast, a stray – like you.
"Well, I guess I'm gonna lose my job tomorrow, Mugsy" you spoke to him as if he were another person that never spoke back as you finished ironing your white work blouse – looking at the clock to observe the minute hand just about to join with the hour, making it 11pm on a Sunday night. You sighed as you hung the fabric over a hanger, placing it on your makeshift wardrobe you had assembled yourself in the form of a rusty nail hanging from a hollow wall.
"Ugh!" you let out a string of incoherent words as you bounced back down on your sofa, looking around your apartment – the faded pink paint on the walls that had been there since you moved in, your ancient T.V that had certainly seen better days and the creaky wooden floorboards that ran into your tiny kitchen area. You would have loved to have a set of table and chairs to eat your cheap store-bought dinner meals off, but space didn't allow for such commodities. Working at the Jeon Corporation was more than excellent money – but most of the money you made, you sent to your grandparents for reasons that just made both your head and heart ache. "Mugsy, we might have to downsize really soon…" you spoke to him from across the room, thinking that tomorrow when you arrived at work, Mr. Jeon would call you into his office and dispose of you like yesterdays oatmeal. "I knew I shouldn't have gone to his big stupid house…why does he need that size of a house for one person? Does he sleep in a different room every night? Piss in one toilet and take a dump in the others?" you scoffed, crossing your arms over your chest as you dreaded the thought of what tomorrow would bring.
"I oughtta give him a piece of my mind before he sends me packing. Who does he think he is anyway?! Coming on to his assistant and then scaring the living hell out of her by throwing his sofa across the room. What a sadist…" you spoke to Mugsy again, only this time – Mugsy actually meowed back at you. You imagined him saying something like "Yeah, you're right! What a sadist, he deserves all the bad things!" when in reality, Mugsy was probably wishing you would turn the light off, go to bed and leave him in peace. You wondered if there was even any point in showing up to work just to be humiliated in front of all the other office staff, but you weren't about to swallow your pride either. "I'm gonna get a good night's sleep, hold my head high and face my demons – I mean my boss, in the morning…" you yawned as you took to your feet, walking around your apartment and making sure everything was switched off, before heading into your even smaller bedroom and collapsing down on the bed; hoping that tonight, you'd at least have a good dream in preparation for the shit-storm that would take place come tomorrow morning.
Like clockwork, you arrived at the Jeon Corporation building at exactly 7am – an hour earlier than Jungkook as per usual to begin sorting out his schedule for the day – even though you knew that today might possibly be the last day you were expected to do such things. After taking the elevator up to the 23rd floor, you made your way to your small office – just adjacent from his larger one. As you smiled and politely bowed to the other women who were all talking about their weekends in the open planned reception area, you reached into your bag to try and rummage around for your cheap perfume you usually purchased from the dollar store; only instead of your perfume, you found the bottom of your bag absolutely littered with cat-treats.
"Of course. Of course I would forget to bring my perfume on a day like today. Well…at least I remembered to put on deodorant this morning.." you thought as you secretly sniffed under your arms, being thankful for such small mercies. After you finished clocking in at reception and turned around to make your way into Jungkook's office – just as you were about to place your fingers on the handle, the door opened very suddenly – revealing Jungkook in his usual best pressed black Armani suit and red tie; looking down at you with his usual cold, stern face…only this time, you were actually afraid of him.
"(Y/N), my office. Now." He spoke with no emotion in his voice – sending a hush of silence throughout the entire reception area as you let out a sigh and closed your eyes in defeat, knowing that every single pair of eyes were on you at that moment. You knew what they were all thinking, you knew that from the tone of his voice that they were suspecting that you would be packing up your things and leaving within the next few days.
"Yes, Sir" you replied feebly, to which he turned on his heel and made his way back towards his desk.
"Close the door behind you, please" he spoke once again, sitting down on his comfortable office chair as you followed him like a scared lamb into his domain, quietly clicking the door closed at his request – hearing the whispers of the women outside. "Oh my god, she's done for. What happened? Do you know?"
You swallowed hard as you tried to control your breathing, not being able to look at him in fear of bursting out in tears. You found yourself almost laughable – having had this whole speech planned out to fire at him, but upon being in his work-mode presence, all of the words were taken right out of your mouth as all you could do was stand and tremble before him. Jungkook inhaled and exhaled sharply, licking his lips ever so slightly as he looked into your sorry little face – hearing your heartbeat going so fast he could almost dance to it.
"Please, take a seat" his voice was soft and gentle in comparison to the way he spoke to you on Friday night, but you knew this was the calm before the storm. You nodded, walking over towards him and placing yourself on the seat in front of his desk – feeling your sweaty palms and your shaky knees knock together as you folded out the non-existent creases in your pencil skirt. Jungkook observed you from behind his desk – feeling guilt for the first time in his life at how his actions had affected you, but something about the situation made him feel mellow – soft and almost humbling as he placed his hands on his desk gently. He knew that he was in full control of his actions now; whereas the other night, due to his insatiable thirst – he was most definitely not able to control what he considered to be his number one weakness. As he cleared his throat, all that was going through your head was "This is it, I'm gone, goodbye corporate world, it was nice knowing you!"
"(Y/N), I'd like to take this opportunity to give you my deepest apologies for my behaviour towards you on Friday night. I was extremely out of line and…you caught me at a very bad time. I'm…sorry if I frightened you or made you feel scared of me. That wasn't my intention, and I can assure you; I will never make you feel like that again." Jungkook could almost sense his own non-existent sweat forming beads on his forehead as he watched your eyes widen to their full capacity.
"W-w-what?" was all you could utter, not believing your own ears as Jungkook's face donned a look of confusion, thinking of how to rephrase his apology. "Be more friendly Jungkook…don't scare her again" he scolded himself.
"I…I'm sorry for shouting at you on Friday night. And…I'm sorry for taking advantage of you in the way I did. It was unbecoming of me, and..I hope this doesn't affect the way you see me." Jungkook's eyes caught yours as you stared at him in such shock, you were sure your heart stopped beating – however, Jungkook was still able to hear it beat so fast that he was sure you were about to go into cardiac arrest. As you looked into his eyes, you couldn't help but compare them to how they appeared the night he kissed you. They were still as black as the starless night sky, but they were less menacing and animalistic. Instead of fading red bags underneath them, it looked like he had just woken up from a 48 hour sleep – rejuvenated and so full of life.
"I…uhm" you stopped, feeling your mouth as dry as a desert from having it wide open in shock. "I…thank you, Sir." You didn't really know what else to say as you wet your lips slowly, still in a complete state of bewilderment. "Wait, so you're not firing me?" you finally blurted out, seeing a dainty smile on Jungkook's lips as he found you ever so endearing and delightful, even when you were hypothetically in the firing line.
"No, (Y/N). What happened was my fault and my fault only. You were only being a good person and returning to me what I had left behind. If you think it would be better for you to not be around me and move to another department…I - although it would cause me great sadness to see you go, I would understand why you would feel like that. I would be more than happy to write you a gleaming referral, if that's what you so wish."
"No! I…I mean, I want to stay with you" you took yourself and Jungkook aback with your words, seeing him raise his eyebrows in jest, "No! I didn't mean it like that, I meant it like –"
Jungkook chuckled softly, his top lip disappearing completely into the smile you managed to put on his face as he laced his fingers between his two hands. "I know what you mean – it's okay (Y/N), you don't have to explain yourself. I'm…I'm very glad that you want to stay by my side here. Thank you for being so kind and understanding towards me."
You felt like you had just ran into a brick wall twenty times over, your brain turning to absolute mush at his words "Thanking me for being so kind and understanding towards…him? What's even happening? Did he hit his head? What the?" you thought over and over, not being able to believe that – not only did you still have a job, but your boss was practically on his knees and apologising to you.
"I…I accept your apology then. Thank you, Sir." you took a breath as you watched his eyes as if they were twinkling back at you. "Let's just…put it behind us now" you finally replied after what seemed like an eternity in your mind. Jungkook felt a wave of relief wash over him – his stomach that was churning – now feeling more relaxed as you gave him a polite smile.
"If that's all, I better get to my work, Sir" you blinked several times. Jungkook tilted his head at you, before looking down at his watch, noting that you didn't technically start work for another 30 minutes.
"Work doesn't start until 8:30am, why did you come in so early if you thought I was going to fire you?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity and a slight playfulness that he had never heard himself speak in so genuinely before. You pulled your lip into a tight smile, feeling slightly embarrassed from your outburst as you looked to the floor.
"I always come in an hour or so earlier to prepare for your day. I don't live far from the office, so…" you trailed off, not knowing why you felt so ashamed to admit that you came in earlier because you just wanted everything to be ready and waiting for his working day. Jungkook kept a steady poker-face at your words, but inside himself he was grinning like a Cheshire cat. "Why is she making me feel like this? It wasn't like this before…what are you doing Jeon Jungkook?" he questioned himself, before coming back to his senses.
"Ah, I see…well, thank you very much. I appreciate your conscientiousness." He smiled at you warmly – the first genuine smile you had ever seen painted on his features to anyone before. "Please go ahead then, don't let me stop you. My first client is…Mr…uhm" Jungkook fumbled about for his phone to look at his schedule, but you already knew who his 8 clients would be, where they were coming from and when they would arrive.
"Your first client is Doctor Han, he'll be arriving at 9:15am but he's usually always 10 minutes late due to the traffic" you said straight away – once again completely taking Jungkook aback as for the first time since you began working for him, he started thinking about all the little things you do to make his life easier. As you stood up and bowed your head at him, Jungkook caught the tail end of your scent, however – today it was not masked by the unnatrual sweetness of the perfume you usually wore. When your back was turned, Jungkook closed his eyes and relished in your natural aroma – the sweet, yet earthy smell that clouded his vision and made him feel like he was swaddled in comfort. The scent that he knew he could possibly become addicted to, if he wasn't careful.
"By the way –" Jungkook paused as you immediately stopped in your tracks, thinking to yourself "Oh fuck, he's changed his mind…fuck!" as you turned your head slightly to barely make out his form behind you.
"That scent you're wearing today?"
"…y-yes, Sir?" you bit your lip furiously, thinking that he must be somehow offended at your natural smell without your perfume on.
"…it suits you much better than your usual choice. I prefer this one." you could feel his eyes on you from behind, his words mixed with his tone being like milk and honey – soft and gentle to your ears, as you finally let out the breath you had been holding in fear that he changed his mind about letting you keep your job.
"Well…thank you, Sir" you said quietly, before opening the door to his office and leaving him alone with his thoughts and your intoxicating aroma that was beginning to drive him to the brink of insanity.
