"Why didn't you tell me earlier?" Steven said on the way back home. They had finished their first day and it wasn't as bad as they had expected. They had that one lesson that day and if there were any more, it would've been a hell of a day.
"I could ask you the same thing" Mathew said in response. He still hadn't forgiven Steven for snooping around in his pc. It wasn't like Steven.
They walked together without talking to each other. They walked in silence on the sunny day it was. They both loved it. It was rare. Sun was rare where they lived. The day wasn't so bad after all. The sun was there to cheer them up.
"I will get some groceries. You go home and relax a bit" Mathew said. He wanted Steven to compose himself. He didn't want Steven to start with all the questions he had. He deserved to know but there was no time to answer all his questions. Mathew didn't have the patience. Not like Steven. Steven always had the patience.
They both departed and headed their destinations. Steven turned left towards their apartment and Mathew went straight ahead where there was a grocery store a few blocks down.
"Don't panic. All will be clear" Mathew cried out. He wanted to reassure Steven. He wanted him calm when they had their next conversation.
How can I not panic, Steven thought. This was all new and hard to believe. He could only imagine things like this in children's storybooks. It was something that wasn't possible in the real world. It wasn't a dream.
He motioned himself towards their apartment. Pushed the door opened and walked towards the elevator. Inside the elevator, he pressed the button which led to the floor their flat was in.
"What are you doing here?" Steven said in fear. He was in shock. He was staring at the creature from his nightmare standing in front of him. In his flat. He couldn't believe it. He knew he was hallucinating.
"You will regret everything" The werewolf sniggered and then disappeared. He couldn't move. He tried his best to hold back his tears. He managed but was still scared for his life.
I should run away. I should just leave. All kinds of negative thoughts had surrounded him. He didn't want to die.
Now it was too late to run. He had to fight it. He had to rise to the challenge and win. It was gonna be tough. They were huge, ferocious creatures, while he was just a human who stood no chance against them. But with Mathew was different. He felt like they had a chance. He felt like this was the time he needed Mathew the most. Mathew was his only chance at passing this semester.
"Are you ok? You are very pale" Steven hadn't seen him come in and made him jump. He thought it was the creature who had made a return for its prey.
"How can I be ok" Steven snapped. He couldn't control it any longer. He needed answers. He needed to know the reality he was living in. He needed Mathew." I just encountered a werewolf. He was threatening me" Steven said.
"Now life will just get harder. You are the first human in this college. You will be like prey. They will hunt you and they will do it slowly and painfully" He had to be truthful now. He couldn't hide the truth from his best friend." However, I will be with you forever. I am strong enough to take multiple of them at once. You have nothing to fear" He tried reassuring Steven but deep down knew that it was going to be a battle almost impossible to win. He has to expect everything. He has to be on the gourd.
"He was from the nightmare I had" Steven murmured but Mathew could hear him clearly. He was a werewolf as well. He had supernatural powers and hearing was one of them.
"Who was?" Mathew knew the answer but he wanted confirmation. He wanted to let him know that he was listening. Now he has to be listening more than ever. One misstep can end his friend's life. His life.
"The werewolf I saw earlier. He was also in my dream last night. I couldn't sleep because of him" Mathew could see the fear in Steven's eyes. He knew it. He also knew that Steven was fighting it.
Steven was tough. He wouldn't give in easily. He would fight until his last breath. Mathew would help him. He would make sure he would.
"Now just rest. You haven't slept well. I will be here so don't fear anything. No one will touch you if I had anything to do with it" Mathew said. He wanted Steven to rest while he found a solution. He might be a strong werewolf but he needed allies. He needed werewolves willing to fight his battle. He needed werewolves he can trust.
It wouldn't be easy though. Werewolves were hungry creatures. They would rip your throat the first chance they get. He was the only werewolf who was an exception. He had lived his whole life with humans which made him a controlling werewolf. He was grateful for it.
He hadn't had high hopes. He knew it was only he and Steven. They were alone. No one to help them. They had the heart for it. They wouldn't run. They wouldn't evade the challenge. They would give it their all. They would battle till there was a side standing.
"Ok. I only have you, Mathew. Only you" Steven said and headed towards his room. Mathew had never felt so emotional, ever. He was always tough. All werewolves were. They never showed emotion. Not this time. Mathew tried his best but he couldn't hold it in any longer.
Tears were sliding down cheeks and onto his lap. He couldn't live without Steven. Without his best friend. He had never cared for anyone so deeply. Mathew had lost his only brother to a werewolf. He didn't want the same to happen with his best friend. He wouldn't let it happen.
Mathew knew there was one easy solution. A peaceful solution. He needed a conversation with the college director. He didn't want to leave Steven alone. He couldn't leave him alone. Werewolves would jump at the chance. Werewolves hated having humans around them. Except for Mathew.
Mathew made a phone call. There was no other way. He couldn't just leave Steven alone. He would be easy prey.
"This is John. Who am I talking to?" John was always a straightforward person. He always wanted to get to the point. He hated stalling anything.
"It's Mathew and I had an urgent matter which I needed to discuss with you. Will you be willing to do that?"
"If I can help, I will" John knew that it might be about the human who had enrolled earlier. He never received any calls from his students.
"My friend, Steven, enrolled earlier to London Beasts" Mathew waited for confirmation.
"Yea, I remember him. He was a stubborn one. I tried telling him off but he wouldn't have any of it. He was determined to study here"
"He has been receiving threats from werewolves and I hoped if you could help in the matter" Mathew didn't have any expectations because he knew that John, himself, would love to get his hands on a human. He would love to rip their throats out and drink his blood like a vampire.
"I am sorry. I don't know how I can help. I am sure you know how werewolves react to a human being among them. If we kill him, we need to be able to hide it. It would be bad for the college" Mathew's blood boiled at the answer he received. He couldn't believe it. The staff of the college wanted to kill Steven as badly as the rest of the students. He was alone. He had to be the lone wolf his friend needed.
"I can't believe it" By now John had hung upon him. Mathew could kill someone now. He was angry and he didn't like it when he was angry. Bad things happened. He slowly began to turn.
He heard a footstep in Steven's room. He knew it wasn't Steven because he was asleep. He had bad feelings about this one.
He hurried towards his room and forced open the door. It slammed and made the monster inside, move away from Steven's bed.
He was angry. He lounged himself at the werewolf and grabbed him by the throat. The werewolf tried to escape but he couldn't match Mathew's strength.
"Don't do it. You will regret it" He grinned but had fear in his eyes.
Steven was wide awake now. He was a spectator. He knew that the one on top was Mathew. Mathew was a werewolf. Any other human being would have passed out but not Steven. He was tough.
"You know that human of yours will die one way or another" the werewolf said.
Mathew couldn't control his anger anymore. He squeezed his hand tighter and tighter. He could hear the werewolf howling with pain until he could no more.
Blood was running down Mathew's hairy hand. He didn't feel any guilt or regret. He felt satisfied. He knew this had to be done. He wanted them to fear him.
He grabbed the werewolf and jumped out of the window. He took him to the cemetery and threw him into one of the empty graves and hid him.
He returned and saw Steven in the same spot staring at him. He slowly turned back to human form. He knew that Steven would start doubting him. Steven would be scared that he was a werewolf as well.
"Thanks, Mathew. You saved my life"
