Aisrin had found all the supplies he had gathered as well as his barge. The barge was being studied by Graycastle carpenters in order learn its design and functions. He left them to continue, hoping they would improve upon it.
As he had done before, he had all citizens make their job choices. The previous soldiers of the city had been removed of their positions and titles. A total of 6,477 soldiers. Before they could be recruited back, they had to go through questioning and screening.
Those that performed heinous deeds under the Baron and his Nobles, were given equal punishments. Those that forced themselves on women or children were Hung, drawn, and quartered.
"My nation has no room for those that seek to spread chaos, distrust, or fear. I will, however, be willing to consider giving the sentence of five years service in the military, as messengers, cleaners, chefs, and servants. But only to those that had no choice, and took no joy in what they were ordered to do." Aisrin had told the Prior Soldiers.
Normally, one would enslave such criminals, but Aisrin despised slaves, for some reason he still could not understand why.
"Isn't that just slavery?" One soldier inquired.
"No, because you're still being paid, at a servants wage." Aisrin explained. He now had the currency of the new era. Simple coins made from what seemed to be Copper. It seemed to be found in abundance all over the plains, or within the three mines Graycastle owned. Making it more available than the more precious metals found deeper in the earth.
"So these are iron and copper mines?" Aisrin asked Butler.
"No, only copper has been mined in these. Iron is outsourced by the only Mining village with Iron deposits. It's about a days journey to the north, at the base of the mountains." Butler replied as he set tea down in front of Aisrin. It was a grayish tea, and not very aromic.
"What is this made of?" Aisrin asked.
"Its a herbal tea meant to strength Spiritual Energy." Butler answered.
"I use mana, this'll probably do more harm than good." Aisrin stated.
(But you have a spiritual orb. Tiny and underdeveloped, but present.)
'Why would I use something I don't understand?'
(Good point, it is inferior compared to mana. And seems to have limited properties as well.)
"I see, hmm. I suppose a herbal tea would be better then." Butler stated as he reached for the tea.
"No, it's fine Butler. I will drink it. Thank you, I appreciate the work you do." Aisrin told him.
"Its my pleasure, Sire." Butler bowed and set about tidying up Aisrins temporary office. He made sure he was next to the little girls room, in case she ever woke up from her coma.
"God. I don't understand any of this garbled nonsense. It's marked down so lazily. 'Today, a lot of copper mined. Other stuff moved to forest.' There's no proper days, no dates, no times, no amount or weight. No casualty list, no hours, nothing!
How close to the end of the year are we? How about how you count the days or months? Weeks even?" Aisrin frustratedly asked.
"Hmm, I don't understand weeks or months, but I understand days and years. We go by the seasons. The year begins with mid winter and ends the following mid winter, only to repeat." Butler explained.
"Okay, similar to earth, interestingly enough." Aisrin muttered.
"I believe we are around the middle of the season of harvest." Butler continued.
'So mid fall. October perhaps? The middle of October?'
"I'd actually dare say, we are exactly mid harvest." Butler stated.
"So Halloween then." Aisrin absent mindedly stated aloud.
"Pardon? Hollow what?" Butler looked at Aisrin curiously.
"Hmm, no, nothing. I'll be making a Calendar based on your information. As usual Butler, you are indispensable." Aisrin set to work immediately.
*The following week*
Aisrin had everyone gather around in the main square. A large canvas spread out behind him, covered in unfamiliar words.
"Today, I have two things to announce. The first being the introduction of a Linear Year Calendar." Aisrin pointed to the canvas.
"Calendar?" Muttering spread from within the crowd. Only the villagers were standing silently, awaiting the details, used to the knew ideas Aisrin came up with.
"Its a measurement of time. Each day is Twenty four hours long. I would like to introduce the specific times of day, but I'll worry on that later. Today, is declared a Thursday. Tomorrow will be Friday. Then Saturday, the end of the week. Beginning the following will be the start of Next Week, Sunday. Followed by Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then Thursday again. This will repeat in a Seven Day Cycle.
This Month is November. The day is the Fifth. I also took the liberty to name this the First Year. So it will be written, for those that write, as the fifth day of November, year one. Or in numeral terms, the fifth day of the eleventh month, year one. Five, eleven, one." Aisrin wrote these terms down on a paper and showed those that could write.
"This seems... rather tedious to remember." A person commented.
"I guarantee it'll be easy to remember. By January, all of you will have a calendar. By January, hopefully more of you can read and write so the Calendar makes sense." Aisrin mumbled the last statement.
"What's the second announcement?" Someone asked.
"Right, the second announcement. I'll be starting employments for new career paths in public service. The military should not be relied on for internal affairs. So I'll be introducing the Police. Crimes committed within city walls will be handled by these people.
The responsibility will be to maintain peace and protection for the people by the people. You'll be paid handsomely and the benefits will be abundant. If you're interested, have experience in military or are quite knowledgeable, then this job is perfect for you.
It's my way of providing you all comfort and safety within the streets. If you are guilty of a crime. you will either be fined or imprisoned, possibly even executed depending on severity. There will be trials for these crimes, so no one will be given unjust sentences.
Needless to say, if you are a Policeman or woman, if you commit a crime or abuse the power given to you, the punishment will be far more severe compared to a civilians." Aisrin explained. This garnered much excitement amongst the people.
'With this, we've stepped into a safer era.'
(I'm impressed. There's much to your knowledge that far exceeds my expectations.)
'I'll take that as the compliment you intended.'
