It had now been four years since Dayn had come to live in Sartann, since meeting Siari in the fall of his first year the two had become the best of friends, Dayn had even been to 'Gizmorock' the fascinating city of the gnomes. He hadn't been as free as he once was though, following the inquisitors departure the Kanara family had been snooping around asking questions of Dayn, the church was baffled.
Dayn had never mentioned using magic to them before so the questions about the use of a radiant mysticism confused them, all they could do was deny that such a thing had ever taken place. An elderly man was left behind to watch over him, rumor had it that the man was Zakary Kanara, Father to the current patriarch of the royal family, the man had an unusual vitality for his age. Zakary served as the Grandmaster of the Order Paladius an order of sanctified knights who once served the Dragon God Selvarthrallax, nowadays they were little more then honor guard for the Royal Family.
He had taken an interest in Dayn and despite his advanced age the man had a stamina and strength that defied reason, the two had sparred on occasion, seeing how thin and frail he looked the man took it upon himself to train the boy.
"Your sword must never dip below your waist boy" he said in his gruff demeanor, he had Dayn training with a sword almost as tall as he was, "listen, start with an over the head swing, master that first and don't let it drop."
Dayn was confounded with this man, how could he not let it drop the damn sword probably weighed more then he did, every time the blade dipped Zakary would smack him over the shoulders with a hard wooden cane. He had been training against a dummy made of wood and straw the man had constructed near Dayn's garden, Zakary came every day and ran him through these drills after his chores.
"Well son, you're improving, at least you weren't dropping the tip to the dirt after every swing today" he said letting out a hearty laugh, "Had the world not changed you'd have made an impressive Paladin."
As usual Dayn collapsed exhausted on his bed at the end of the day, lately he'd had no time for himself, last time he saw Sieri was around two weeks ago now, his crops weren't holding up since he wasn't able to tend to them as often. He knew what Zakary would say, "A warrior doesn't need a farm, he earns money with every swing of his blade" he laughed to himself as he said it out loud Dayn had drifted off to sleep before he knew it.
He was floating in a great black mass, it wasn't dark it was just black lit up by thousands of great balls of glowing silver and gold light, it wasn't a void either, there was much activity, the movement of great belts of rock some of which burned as it passed him. He recognized this place, he had seen it in anime and science fiction movies in his previous life, he was floating alone in outer space.
"It's been a while, should I call you Dayn now?" The divine being asked it was only then he noticed the old man standing next to him. "No, no, don't speak, for now just listen, you've been granted the divine spark, you are the only living being on Thallia currently capable of wielding divine magic."
"There will be many who seek to kill you, others will seek to use you to accomplish their own ends if they find out, one of my pantheon wishes to meet you however he is going to wait." "You should feel accomplished, the being who is interested in you had lost all faith in the race of mortals following the 'Dragon Wars.'" "This will be the one and only time I interfere in your current life we won't be speaking again." "Now, you will live your life, the one I spoke of will come to you in the near future to make his will known, should you desire it he will guide you down the divine path."
As Terran drifted away from him in whatever state he was held Dayn whispered "Thank you," his eyes snapped open to find Sister Eve staring at him in shock. He looked around expecting something to have taken place. Nothing, he was laying in his bed looking up at her, her expression of astonishment did not fade.
"What's wrong?" he asked concerned, "While you were asleep just now, you spoke, in the language of the gods" she said astounded. "What? no I didn't" he said perplexed, "Are you still half asleep sister?"
The sister rushed from the room, Dayn rolled over and looked out his window, the sun had begun to crest the hills in the distance, "I suppose its time to get out of bed" he said to himself. He was half dressed when Father Archibald entered the room with Sister Eve at his heels, Dayn knew where this was going.
"Father, I couldn't have spoken some different language I don't know any" he said exasperated. "No living being knows the Celestial tongue" the father agreed, "However there are some who spoke it in the past, not understanding how it became known to them."
Perfect, a history lesson first thing in the morning all because he apparently talked in his sleep, the father had begun to pace in his room as was his way. "They awoke understanding the language of the divines, not all were just men however as even dark deities exist, these would speak to their champions and have them perform the most vile of tasks."
"The good gods we have known to choose champions in the past have been Selvarthrallax, Giarallis, and Formax, although the latter had his religion destroyed following a heretical uprising by his chosen priest." "Terran was said to have chosen a champion at one time, its merely conjecture, it was supposed to be a Dark skinned elf who's name is forgotten, he's referred to now simply as the 'Void Serpent.'"
"If you did indeed speak celestial in your sleep it is an omen, its something that must be kept secret at all costs, although we have a royal family Kanarys is ruled by the inquisitors make no mistake." "If this organization hears even a rumor someone spoke the language they'll have them eliminated on principle."
Dayn took the message to heart, he had already allowed Dana to learn of his abilities and now he had Zak the instructor foisted on him, last thing he needed is a bunch of religious zealots after his life.
