Chereads / The Serpent’s tongue / Chapter 3 - Survival.

Chapter 3 - Survival.

A new dawn has risen over the unknown land, as it rises, He awakened from his slumber, as the star that lights the teal blue skies begins to shine over the distant hills, scattering throughout the rose quartz coloured leaves of the forestry as the native fauna began to chirp to life, after doing his usual morning routine, he slumped down on the pilot seat. Staring out the window.

"Good morning…captain's log…or well…survival Log day 46…I just managed to get things stable here…it was only a few days ago that I managed to bring power to the ship…and to my home… but uhh… I'll recap everything…"

Silver adjusted his posture and brought out a small notepad, placing his glasses on which luckily didn't smash during the initial entry.

"So…I woke on this world, my…former crew mates were…are still missing…they took about 96% of the resources and consumables on board, and with not knowing how long I have been unconscious for, I presume that even if I started to travel in a direction, I definitely won't see them again… so…uhh…a big tree which has a hollow interior grew around the craft…which I made my home…"

He looked around as he ended his little monologue to observe his now rustic decorations around the cleaner craft with his tree house…literally lit up with small candles..rugs and pelts covered bits of the planks that were fitted into the bark, allowing him to half about a third of platform, half a sixth of stair going up to the next platform in a spiral pattern, it had 4 sections, the top one was the main bed, still in construction, the one down from it was the so called 'kitchen' according to Silver, it was simply a platform with a little table where he sat and peered through his little window which was simply a hatch where the bark can be place back to hide the interior to the outside eye. The floor down was still his undecided bit, and the first floor was his equipment rack.

"I would show you around…but currently I only just got the generator…uhh…waterwheel functional, it barely outputs enough to charge the call card enough just yet, but It provides enough for a short while if I left it to charge the batteries…DR. stone style…instead I used some vials and bottles from the testing kit…anyway"

He cleared his throat and adjusted his glasses as he pulled out a notebook, it was worn on the edges and extremely thick when closed, it weighed at least 10kg as he opened the book to start at the third page.

"On day 3, I decided to begin testing on the local composition of the earth here…it found all kinds of things, and thus lead me to my theory… Earth's composition of soil is 45% minerals, about 25% water and air and 5% of organics . While here, it's 15% air, 30% water and 65% minerals…"

He sighed as he flips the book around to show the general effects he observed during his time studying. The pages sprawled with notes, diagrams and sketches of certain Fauna. Before resting it on his knee and taking his glasses off briefly as he rubs his eyes, continuing his lecture.

"The saturation of minerals to water allow for better diffusion into organic matter, and this creates a much higher concentration of elements such as iron, zinc and copper, that supercharges cellular growth at much more potent level. Even the insects can become as large as house cats if provided with enough of their prey. On top of that, as you can imagine, things are crazier than simple higher concentration causing better growth…"

He turns yet another page as takes a quick drink of apple blended tea. Before noticing the length of the video, he decided to wrap it up with this last point.

"Due to this higher level of minerals and water, the ground is only a little softer, but this softer ground makes excellent conditions for plant life, and of course, fruit, vegetables, spices and the like are much richer and larger. This apple blend tea was made using a fruit that remarkably resembles its earth counterpart, however it was 3 times larger and a single peel of the skin has the same water concentration as an entire fifth of a regular apple… so essentially this is a planet from just four pages worth of noting, is basically earth with X-factor…"

Closing the book with a loud thud he took off his glasses, the entire craft rumbled slightly with a slow and menacing thump, once, twice, thrice, four…five…and fading into the silence, Silver simply smiled at the call card before simply ending his video.

"And that concludes this observation log and recap, next time I'll go into the more crazy stuff, until then I guess."

After that he simply finished his tea and grabbed his shovel made with a large hard scale and ivory like rod. Today was the day he would finish his latest project, a pulley system, capable of finally moving his loving partner out from the roots of his home. For this he had to make additional waterwheels, gears and ropes, all he had to do was hook the ropes up to the craft's winglets and crane catches and dig as well as he has ever dug.He wanted to get this thing out as soon as possible, perhaps even use it as a boat if all else fails, but first, he needed to completely examine the external damage over the time it's been here.

He began spearing the shovel into the ground and chucking the soil into a large pile near a small kiln, the soil made perfect brick mortar due to its high mineral content, and he didn't want to waste the soil either, either he would utilise everything, or nothing. As the sun in the aquatic hue atmosphere turned into a bright red, he finally laid his trusty shovel to rest, the waterwheels struggling, but slowly pulling the craft out from under the tree, creaking the roots as the thick, dense foundations to the hollow tree bent and eased out of the way for the mossy hunk of composites, creaking and howling in age,Silver began to quickly cut the ropes, ecstatic about the eventual turn of events, his palms rough, dry and embedded in dirt, his hair sticking to his head as his body ached from foot to hand. He peered out to the sunset, the rivers, clouds, ravines and land. He was simply over the moon to have made some real progress.

Some time later, after doing what he could to tidy the excavations, he hoisted himself up into his hollow home, planting his face onto the soft woven leaves, his resting head on a sack full of the fluffiest of feathers. His body tingling from excitement but his mind slowing to a gentle breeze, similar to the one from his window hatch, it had now been 45 days, the latest two of which had been non stop digging, as much as his stomach beckoned him to consume whatever he had left, his fatigue overwhelmed him as he floated off to sleep, a smile rested on his face.

Waking up aching all over, he snacked on some berries and fruits, the pale scarlet sunrise contrasting with the blackened green dusk, Silver yawned in a satisfying stretch. Hopping into the brisk air a gentle breeze brushed over his face as he proceeded to wash himself down in the fresh water river, listening to birds and fauna stir themselves awake he began to rub himself clean, mainly his scars and cuts. And for a while he considered his life once again, despite his victory the previous day, it only gave him more objectives to complete, and more questions, he was certain something was wrong with the planet on a fundamental level. He felt empty, Hollow, missing something in his current life, and under the morning sun, he gazed out over the river, beyond the drop of the waterfall, and saw, a large column, dusted in mist from afar, with vibrantly blushed trees, surrounding its rear were the mountain ranges.

His jaw, gaped wide, unable to fathom how he hasn't seen it before until it struck him. Like a hammer, the void was torn asunder as his psyche burst with hope, if that's what he thinks it is, then there must be others too. His face beamed as bright as the sun, giggling uncontrollably as he waded out the river and to the open air where the rush of wind through the trees dried him off quickly, and after dressing again, he took another peer at the tower so distant from him. It was one he recognised, one which he knew that no matter how dilapidated it was, it's emblem stood firm, it was the one thing they made with only the best materials, the dragon's head.

Now his goal is a simple one, traverse the land, over the lake, beyond the darkest forestry, and to the building, it brought about a breath of fresh air to the former Wilderness, his next goal was to now finish what he planned from the start, the restoration of the craft. He acquired, a new Quest!
