Chapter 2 - A Different Time

Vilyem exhaled heavily as he adapted to his new face and identity.

Then, he dressed up in simple clothing and left the house.

From his new memories, he knew that his mother normally came back from her job at the brewery late in the afternoon, so he had some time to explore this new era.

As he stepped out from the front porch of their medium-sized home, he didn't see any massive differences.

'At least I don't see any castles directly next to slums like back then....' He remarked.

A four-wheeled large carriage passed through the wide boulevard.

Vilyem kept notice of this because 400 years ago, the streets in the city could not support such a large carriage, and the infrastructure was clearly better now.

'The technology doesn't seem too different, though,'

He hummed to himself as he walked along the street.

Suddenly, a short woman stopped in front of him.

She wore a thick cloak, and on top of that, she held up an umbrella even though the sky couldn't be any clearer.

"Young man, would you be interested in a seer's insight into your future?" The woman softly said.

As soon as she said that, a man with a broom approached them and pointed the broom at her.

"You doomsday cultists! Leave our children alone!" The man threatened to hit her if she continued speaking to him.

The short woman backed down.

"Uncle, it's alright, I'll determine by myself if they're worth my trust," Vilyem stepped in and politely asked the man to retreat.

The middle-aged man frowned and stepped back.

Then, the short woman nodded her head and passed him a waiver with a distinctive stamp in the top-right corner.

Distinctive, it was, because Vilyem jumped back when he saw the symbol.

'Half a circle, arches to represent sun rays, and an eye in the center, it can't be anything other than the Sunlight Seers!' Vilyem was extremely familiar with their organization.

'It makes sense why she held an umbrella on a clear day then....' Thoughts spun uncontrollably in his head, and his past came to mind.

"Young man, are you okay?" The short woman asked him.

"I'm...alright, thank you," Vilyem held his forehead.

'The Sunlight Seers have been reduced to a mere doomsday cult..? Margara would not like this,'

A sudden curiosity overwhelmed him, and he wondered if this changed too.

"Sol, Oculus et Posterius," This was the greeting that members of the organization used in the past.

"How do you know the greeting of Ancestor Margara?!" The short woman was stunned, and her cloak fluttered away, revealing her youthful face.

Vilyem realized that using that greeting was an impulsive move.

However, he swiftly prepared an excuse.

"I'm from Jombo, we still use that greeting..." Vilyem cleared his throat.

The woman's eyes glowed even further, and she exclaimed, "You're from Jombo?! Then, you came in a Magitech Airship?!"

'What?'

"Y-yes, I did."

"They're so advanced over Ifrivo, I'm so jealous..."

Vilyem soon understood what was going on, and clenched his fists sneakily.

'Morrigan didn't listen to me, then? I told her to stop investing so much into military Specializations and start funding Magitech Specialists...It was clear, even back then, that it would be the future!' He was feeling frustrated.

Did they use his death as an opportunity to do whatever they wished?!

"Well, young man, it was nice talking to you, I need to go now!" Ultimately, he was left with only a waiver.

He closely examined it.

"Divine your near future - only 10 Marks!"

'At least she didn't change the currency,' Vilyem searched through his pocket.

*Clank*

When he took out his hand, he only found 8 Quartermarks or 2 Marks.

In any case, it was not time to interact with that organization...not yet.

He continued walking throughout the place.

He discovered that this city was named Lafto and that it was the capital city of the Consular Republic, the major power in Ifrivo.

As he navigated throughout the paved roads, he encountered an exposed chariot.

Inside the chariot, a large chunk of gold ingots laid there, and alluringly reflected the sunlight.

'Is the owner not afraid of theft?' Just as he thought that, a thin man ran towards the chariot.

*Pew*

A small, round object pierced through the thief's body at lightning speed.

The man fell to the ground, and his blood soon pooled into a small puddle.

Vilyem was completely stricken-aback and looked towards the source of the attack.

A dark-skinned man held a strange, metallic device in his hand.

Smoke rose from a hole in the front of the device, and it shined a threatening and sharp reflection.

Someone screamed, "Magitech Armament -Pistol! It's an envoy from Jombo!"

Vilyem felt time freezing, and he contemplated.

'That's the power of Magitech? Why didn't you listen to me, Morrigan?!'

"They steal our resources to make Magitech tools that they sell to us at a higher price...the Jombonians are shrewd businesspeople," A voice took him out of his trance.

Vilyem turned towards the direction of the voice and found an old man reading a newspaper.

"What do you mean, Mister?" He could not accept the man's statement, he could not.

The old man coughed and replied, "Nothing much, lad, I'm just trying to educate a young boy."

Vilyem left the dangerous scene of the murder.

"This is the worst of the worst!" Vilyem screamed out loud.

The passerbies looked at him like he was a lunatic.

Suddenly, he felt a hint of moisture on his clothing.

It was beginning to rain...

"Oh no! I need to get home or Mother will know I was outside!" Vilyem began running, but his brain continued spinning.

Suddenly, he tripped and fell onto the wet, hard ground.

He raised his head from the ground and found that his nose was bleeding.

'What did I die for?! Morrigan, how could you have done this to me?' Tears fell from his eyes, but the rain concealed them.

He sacrificed his life for the revolution, but his allies did not even keep their word.

Vilyem stood up and listlessly paced back home.

His mother was waiting on the front porch.

She was clearly worried, and she took him in her arms and screamed, "Vilyem! Vilyem! What's wrong?!"

He had fainted.
