Chereads / The Checkmate Murder / Chapter 6 - Henderson

Chapter 6 - Henderson

Once I drop Olive off I take a quick stop to Rookie's home. Finding them leaned against their porch post with their head down.

"Come Elizabeth we got to go!" I yell from the console, causing Rookie to shoot up from her spot head whirling around to look towards me. Jumping off the step, she dashes over to my car, pulling the door open and sliding in.

"Morning Chief, what's on today's agenda?" She questions me, pulling the strap over her as I pull from her house.

"Besides what happened a few days ago with the Dawson boy and Iris. We got to find this killer. Whoever it is. They can't just mess with my town and get away with it." I grumble under my breath, tightening my grip on the wheel as I drive back around the school once more. I can see the confusion on the rookie's face as we pull from the lot.

"Chief? I know that Olive girl was apart of the original investigation. But do you got to keep such an eye on her? She can't be dangerous?"

"Ha, you wouldn't understand rookie. Maybe one day, but that day isn't today." I blurt out pulling into the station in the middle of town, the graffiti has gotten worse over the years as it scales the outer wall beside the main road. Getting into my spot, a rustic sign with the name, A. Henderson is slightly scratched out.

"Chief, are we just waiting for them to strike again?" Rookie questions me one more time as I step out of the car, pulling my keys into my pocket. Ignoring the question we make our way into the building, all around young and old officers rush about. This was probably the most action some of these men have seen in a long time. Shaking my head, I slide my fingers against the corner of each desk as I pass.

Checking each officer as some looked from their paper, others are to engross in what had transpired that they don't acknowledge us as we reach my office. Popping the knob up slightly a soft click hits my ears as I push it open.

"When are you ever going to get that fixed Andrew?" Stopping with a leg in the door, I look back to find a woman in a medical attire, hair as grey as the tiles below us, sharp black frames against her high nose.

"Alice, you got something for me?"

'Oh, how that question should not have dropped from my lips as a wicked smirk plays at her lips'

"You know me to well Andrew. Now come, I have something special to show you." She announces throwing her arm over in a sign for us to follow. Which I do, a small drip of hope coming from my orbs as we enter the basement morgue.

"What did you find?" I quickly blurt out as soon as the double doors open. Alice snickers walking around the covered bodies side by side.

"As you know Andrew both bodies were found by our lovely little Olive, and as our pictures and reports show the bodies before being brought to me where within peculiar postures as though creating a scene." She takes a breath she unveils the young Dawson boy, his upper torso covered in strange sigils. "These sigils, at first unknown are something that has intrigued me for the last few days, and not just myself." She motions behind her to her assistant who is headfirst into a large stack of worn-bound books.

"We believe these sigils, symbols, whatever you wish to call them have more of a meaning then what I first believed." Alice's assistant raises his voice a bit as he stands from his spot in the corner of the room, a large book within his grasp as he walks over.

"What my assistant Oliver and I have found out is that these symbols, as small as they are, are symbolizing a sort of board of sorts."

"A board?" Questioning with quirked brow, she nods placing a gloved hand over the symbols. "I don't see it."

"It's only if you're looking for it sir. Whatever or whoever has etched this into their skins has started a game, but with who is unknown."

"So, you're telling me there is more then one killer in my town." I blurt anger dripping from my tone as Alice waves her hands in surrender.

"It's only a theory my dear Andrew, but if its true. Yes." Alice sighs, folding her arms over her chest as I run my hands through my hair.

'This is more trouble than its worth.'
