'They… stopped…'
I nervously swallowed my saliva. I pressed one of my hands on the door, while the other blocked my mouth to ensure no sound would escape.
The door was unlocked. If they wanted to break in through force, I didn't think I could handle them.
Step, step.
My blood felt cold at the sound of footsteps approaching the door. I glanced around, but there was no other door or place to hide inside this room. The equally dark room made me ill at ease and more nervous. If it wasn't for the big window which allowed the moonlight to shine through, I might feel trapped and suffocated in here.
Did the Gardner household have a habit of turning off every light when the night comes? Weren't they afraid of thieves breaking in? Were they so rich they don't care even if thieves steal one or two things?
