The sky was bright but not as unforgiving as that during summer. The air was salty; the sand, warm. The sound of the waves was a comforting lullaby tempting me to sleep with my back lying flat on the seashore. I once did that one summer in our province—took a little nap—until I was awakened by pricking sensations under my back. Grandma said it was probably those super tiny crabs I don’t know what they’re called. All I knew was that I was covered with sand, and my clothes, and she scolded me in an instant, saying she’s going to have a hard time doing the laundry again.
Yana and I almost ran to meet the sea in swim shirts and shorts, and as soon as our feet clashed with the waves we staggered a little. I held her hand as we walked past the rough, pebbled bed, until our feet sank into the soft, powdery sand.
