I woke up next to a bottle of water, a pack of crackers, and an orange. I blinked a few times more, processing the musty smell and the dusty corner before my eyes. There was only a thin mat laid between my body and the wooden floor… of a small room. I knew I had fainted a while ago. But why am I here?
“You better eat.”
I quickly turned my head to where the voice came from, my stiff shoulders wincing in the process. There I saw Evelyn Quintana stand up from her seat and was about to head towards the door.
“Wait!” I interjected, panic rising in my throat. “Why are you leaving me here?” I quickly, yet achingly, hoisted myself up.
Evelyn stopped by the door and threw a sideways glance at me. “I just saved your life, young lady. Now, be a good girl and stay here for a while. They’re almost here,” she said.
“Who? Those men? Those smuggling partners of yours?” I shouted, letting contempt eat away my confusion.
