Chereads / The Rebirth of Eli / Chapter 5 - Graveyard Encounter

Chapter 5 - Graveyard Encounter

After watching the heartbreaking scene at the Hospital, Secretary Kim trusted his gut and placed a late-night call to his friend and boss, John Carter explaining his findings and suspension.

If he was not wrong, he had found a lost grandchild of the Carter clan. The only child of John Carter whose life was not fully accounted for was Nox Carter, the second of his three sons who had rebelled and left the family, choosing love over his birthright.

Could this child be the product of that relationship before his unfortunate demise? He wondered. He had made the necessary arrangements beforehand and they would know the results soon enough. In the meanwhile, he had also arranged for a background check on Eli.

His thoughts were interrupted as the Hospital chairman rushed back into his office with two of the board members in tow.

"Apologies for keeping you waiting, Secretary Kim"

These men who usually could not be assessed by most of the elites in Green City, had their heads bowed in the presence of Kim Asher. Being the Head secretary and right-hand man to one of the richest men not only in the Capital but on the continent was not an easy feat. They did not even dare to breathe too harshly at that moment.

"The results are ready" The hospital chairman announced, presenting a thin sealed envelope to him.

After Bernard's visit, Eli rang for the doctor to review the current medical condition of her body. As someone who had a weak body in her previous life, she did not want a repeat of her first life. The doctor informed her that apart from the sprain on her shoulder, being slightly malnourished, and dehydrated she was otherwise fine.

She listened closely to his recommended prescription and diet suggestions before thanking him. As the doctor walked out, Eli changed back into her own clothes and exited the ward then headed to the ICU.

"Your Grandmother's outstanding hospital bill has been taken care of by the man who came in with you yesterday" Doctor Sam announced.

" He had also paid for the cost of your grandmother's funeral arrangements"

"Of course you being her only kin, no action has been taken. However, he had made sufficient payment to cover whatever decision you went with at the funeral hall"

Eli was slightly surprised by this information. She did not understand why he would also go ahead and pay her the previous host's grandmother's outstanding medical bill and even foot the burial bill.

She could understand how Secretary Kim might have felt responsible for her and pay for her treatment but her grandma's bills as well? It was outside what a random kind stranger will do.

He was either a very generous stranger or he wanted something from her. Whatever the case she will figure out when the time comes. She put her questions aside and thanked the doctor before walking out of the hospital and hailing a cab to the funeral home.

It was early evening when the burial took place. The sun was still out however it had begun drizzling lightly. Her grandma was laid to rest next to her late husband on the hilltop, just as she had requested. Apart from a few hospital staff who stopped by to pay their respect, Eli was the only one in attendance.

She did not bother to delay the process as there was no need to wait nor was there any other family or friend to consider. The previous host's grandma had lived in seclusion on the outskirts of Green City for the greater part of her life. She had no children and had no other family besides her late husband and the previous host.

In many ways, she and the previous host's grandmother had a lot in common. She wondered about her own funeral back home. Was it going to be attended by just the hospital staff too? Maybe her lawyer might stop by with lucifer. Her thoughts stayed on her dog, Lucifer. Did he miss her as she did him?

As the funeral came to an end. She thanked the hospital staff and watched them leave before leaving herself her umbrella in tow. She was still recovering from a fever and did not want a repeat of yesterday.

Eli was walking down the hill, taking small steps towards the lower levels of the graveyard when she spotted a young man kneeling in front of a gravestone. It was an odd sight -seeing an immaculately dressed young man in a three-piece designer suit kneeling in the dirt, under the rain in front of a gravestone but that was not the most catchy thing about his appearance.
