Chapter 73 - Ice Sore

Townsville…

The city skyline is under a blazing sun.

"The city of Townsville!" The narrator yelled.

The view begins to shimmer and waver in the heat.

"Oh! And man, is it hot." The narrator said, wearily, groaning.

A street is full of red-faced, sweaty people and pets on the sidewalk, at their windows, in their cars—absolute misery all around from the heat wave.

Outside Utonium Residence…

"Even here, at the Powerpuff Girls' suburban home…" The narrator said.

(Jared's POV)

Utonium Residence…

The Professor is working and sweating at his desk, a fan running at his elbow.

"…the heat is making Professor Utonium hot under the collar." The narrator said.

"Force equals the cosine of the direct…" The Professor said, under his breath. "No, that's not it!" He looked at his coffee mug, labeled 'Science Is Cool', on the desk. "Darn it! Ow!"

The Professor pounds the desk, upsetting the mug, and yells in pain as its contents spill over his hand, searing it with hot liquid.

At a pot on the kitchen stove, Buttercup minding it. Blossom and Bubbles are at the table behind her, spoons at the ready, but getting impatient. I am drinking a mocha frappucino to try and keep myself cool.

"Hurry up with our oatmeal, Buttercup!" Blossom said, angrily.

"Yeah, hurry up!" Bubbles yelled.

"Hurry up?!" Buttercup exclaimed.

"Yeah!" Blossom said.

"Yeah!" Bubbles said.

"All right." Buttercup said, hitting the pot with a quick blast of her eye lasers, and the oatmeal caught fire. Slapping the lid on, she brings it to the table. "Here it is."

"Finally!" Blossom said, excitedly.

"Finally!" Bubbles cheered.

"Nice and hot." Buttercup said, removing the lid.

"Um…" I said, looking at the pot. "Are you sure that's cool?"

"It is cool." Buttercup said, as the oatmeal is steaming and boiling, definitely way too hot to eat, especially after the tomboy tried to speed things up with her eye lasers. "Totally cool."

Blossom and Bubbles dig in, but stop after only a bite or two, as their eyes open wide. The pair scream in pain. Bubbles' eyes have watered up, and she is fanning her tongue to cool it off.

"Aah!" Bubbles said, her tongue hanging out. "Oh! My mouth!"

Blossom is in similar discomfort.

"This oatmeal's too hot!" Blossom said, her tongue out.

"Too hot!" Bubbles yelled.

Buttercup is hovering over the table near her sisters, still holding the pot, "So blow on it!"

After giving Buttercup an annoyed glare for her late suggestion after Bubbles and Bubbles have already burned their tongues, she regards the oatmeal for a long moment, then takes a deep breath to blow on her spoon. Freeze frame on this as the Narrator then speaks.

"And wouldn't you know, of all days, today would be the day Blossom discovers she has a new power." The narrator said, sulkily.

"Finally." I said, and Blossom blows on the spoon and is flabbergasted to find it coated with ice when she stops. "Your new power, Blossom."

"Ice breath! Brr!" The narrator cheered.

Buttercup is now seated at the table. Blossom jumps up from her chair.

"I know, Jared! Hey, guys, look what I just did!" Blossom said, delighted.

"Hmm... Do it again." Buttercup said, getting up.

"Okay." Blossom said, blowing toward Buttercup's face, coating it with a film of ice.

"Look! She blew ice out!" Bubbles said, looking at Buttercup.

"How did you do that?" Buttercup asked, wiping her face.

"I just blew." Blossom said, happily.

"Oh, yeah?" Buttercup asked, taking a breath and letting it out.

Nothing.

"I can't do it!" Buttercup said, frustrated.

Bubbles, still in her seat, blows a tiny puff of air over her spoon. Nothing.

"I can't do it, either." Bubbles said, crushed.

"So only you can do it." Buttercup said, looking at Blossom.

"I guess so." Blossom said, sadly.

"So what are you going to do with it?"

"I know! I know! Make the floor all ice, like in Tom and Jerry. That's my favorite." Bubbles said, happy again.

"Oh yeah. The Tom and Jerry Short, 'Mice Follies'. I forgot I showed you girls that." I said, smiling. "That one is a classic."

"Yeah! You did! Make the floor all ice, Blossom!" Buttercup said, impatiently.

"Well, I'll try." Blossom said, taking a deep breath and blowing across the kitchen floor.

In seconds, it becomes an ice rink.

"You did it!" Bubbles and Buttercup said, at the same time.

"I did it!" Blossom said, excitedly.

Buttercup jumps down onto the floor, "Oh, boy! This is cool!"

"Whee!" Bubbles said, skating on the floor..

"This so beats Weiss freezing the pool at Beacon to do ice skating with Shirabe." I said, skating on the floor.

"Check me out!" Buttercup said, sliding along on her knees. "Yaaaay!" The Professor's feet come in. "Hey, Professor."

The Professor is holding his scalded hand, taking no notice of what has just happened.

"ButterCUUUP! Ooh!" The Professor said, and his feet slide out from under him, and he lands flat on his back.

The Professor gets up, staring at the floor and rubbing his head. The girls are hovering behind him. I am still skating on the floor, enjoying every second of it.

"What in the name of…" The Professor said, at a loss for words.

"She did it!" Bubbles and Buttercup said, pointing at Blossom.

"Blossom, did you do this?" The Professor asked, looking at Blossom.

"Uh-huh. Sorry, Professor." Blossom said, letting out a sigh.

Now the Professor has climbed off the floor and is trying to keep his balance.

"How on earth did you do it?!" The Professor exclaimed.

"She blew, and ice came out!" Bubbles cheered.

"Blossom has ice powers, Professor." I said, while the Professor was rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "She got it way before me."

"You're kidding! Show me, Blossom." The Professor said, happily.

"Okay!" Blossom said, as a gust of freezing air emerges from the left and frosts the Professor over.

The Professor's face is now frozen solid, as is the hand he had at his chin. When he speaks, it is through clenched teeth.

"Incredible!" The Professor said, excitedly.

"But, Professor, Jared…" Bubbles said, as she and Buttercup are next to the Professor. "I can't make the ice come out."

"Yeah, Professor, Jared. Me and Bubbles can't do it, and I thought you made us all the same." Buttercup said, annoyed.

"Well, Buttercup…" The Professor said, kneeling. "…you know, even though you all have super abilities, like super strength and being able to fly and laser eye beams, you also each have your own special unique abilities, like Bubbles being able to speak Spanish."

"¡Sí!" Bubbles cheered.

"Well, it's almost time for school." The Professor said, leaning toward Blossom. "Now, Blossom, I want you to do your best to control your new power. Don't use it unless you really need to." Blossom nods. "And try not to make your sisters too jealous."

The Professor forces a wink. The frost crackles on his eyelid.

"I won't, Professor. I promise." Blossom said, frowning.

"I want you to have fun with it, Blossom." I said, still skating across the floor. "Remember to chill out.."

"I will, Jared. I promise."

"That's good. I'm going to help the Professor thaw out." I said, skating near the Professor and pulling him away. "Have fun at school, girls."

(Open POV)

Townsville…

Bubbles and Buttercup are in flight, toting color-coordinated backpacks and not looking too pleased with these developments following what happened back at the house with the Professor and Jared. They glare back over their shoulders as they look at Blossom, gliding along on a ramp of ice and blowing ahead of herself to extend it.

Exterior of Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

It is shimmering in the heat wave.

Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

Inside, Ms. Keane is fanning herself with her hand and looking daggers at a broken controller on the wall.

"Of all the days for the air conditioner to break!" Ms. Keane said, angrily.

A boy comes up behind Ms. Keane.

"Oh, teacher, I made a drawing. Look." Teddy said, holding up the drawing of people staggering around under a bright red sun.

Ms. Keane is considerably less than enthused, "Teddy, I don't care! Now, go play!"

Teddy slinks away, and Ms. Keane sighs. Another boy is pointing happily at the window.

"Hey, it's the Powerpuff Girls! Hola, Buttercup!" Pablo said, excitedly.

Buttercup floats by, "Shut up, Pablo!"

"Hola, Bubbles!"

Bubbles floats by, "¡Movarte niño!"

Pablo's face falls.

Blossom flies and lands next to Pablo, "Hi, Pablo."

"Blossom, how come your sisters are so mean?" Pablo asked.

"Oh, it's 'cause I have ice powers, and they don't, and they're all jealous." Blossom said, sadly.

The other girls are watching these proceedings with contempt.

"Nyaaah!" Bubbles and Buttercup yelled, at the same time.

Ms. Keane is coming in through the door.

"Okay, kids, listen up. They're coming over to fix the air conditioning, so you kids get to go outside and play." Ms. Keane said, wearily.

The kids sound far from excited at this prospect, but she cuts their protest short.

"OUTSIDE!" Ms. Keane said, pointing at the window.

Outside Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

The sun is blazing down over the school flagpole.

"Outside?! In this heat wave?!" The narrator exclaimed, looking down at the playground. "Oh, the poor little things…"

Across the playground, strewn with kids in various stages of heat exhaustion, just as the Narrator was worried about.

Pablo crawls toward Blossom, with a begging tone, "Blossom...use your ice power."

"No, Pablo. The Professor said I can only use it if I really need to. And Jared told me to have fun with it." Blossom said, sadly. "But I don't know how to have fun with my new power. The Professor's orders contradict Jared's."

Pablo collapses behind Blossom. Another boy runs up, frantic.

"Blossom! Blossom!" Boy 3 said, worried.

"What is it, Hanout?" Blossom asked.

"Come quick! It is Mary! She's in very much trouble!" Hanout said, looking at Mary.

Mary is the typical fat kid with glasses. She is on her back, lobster red and moaning, with three other kids standing around her, deeply concerned about her health in the heat wave.

"Ohhh…it's so hot…I can't breathe…" Mary said, sadly.

"Hang in there, Mary." A girl said, pointing up from the ground, next to Mary's head.

Blossom flies in and is silhouetted against the sun, "Hi, Mary."

"Blossom…is that you...?" Mary asked.

"Listen, Mary. Professor said not to use my ice breath unless…" Blossom said, letting out a sigh.

"But I'm frying!"

"Well…okay." Blossom said, taking a deep breath and lets it fly over Mary. "But Jared said to have fun with it. Oh. This is what he meant."

"Whoa, Blossom!" Mary said, relieved.

The other kids begin pleading for help.

"Well…I don't know." Blossom said, looking at the other kids.

Bubbles and Buttercup zip into view.

"Uh-uh! Professor said she's not supposed to!" Buttercup said, angrily.

"Please, Blossom?" The kids asked.

"Mmmm…" Blossom said, sadly.

Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

A repairman is bent over the AC unit while Ms. Keane watches in disgust and disbelief.

"Sorry, Ms. Keane. I'll have to come back tomorrow." The repairman said.

"Great. Just great!" Ms. Keane said, walking to the door. "Stupid heat!" She opened the door, sighing. "It's like walking into an oven!"

Ms. Keane steps out and is met by Bubbles and Buttercup.

"Ms. Keane! Ms. Keane! Blossom's doing something bad." Bubbles said, frowning.

"What are you talking about? Blossom never does anything bad." Ms. Keane said.

"She's showing off her stupid ice powers and Professor said…" Buttercup said, looking at Ms. Keane.

"Ice powers?! You girls don't have ice powers!" Ms. Keane yelled.

"She does." Bubbles and Buttercup said, pointing at the window.

Outside Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

The playground looks as if it has just been hit by a cold snap. Snow and ice cover every surface. Kids are having the usual winter fun—skating, snow angels, snowmen, and so forth. Blossom is blowing ice.

"Blossom?" Ms. Keane asked, approaching behind Blossom.

"Ms. Keane!" Blossom said, surprised.

Blossom has made a statue of the teacher as Lady Liberty, only holding a pencil and book instead of a torch and stone tablet.

"It's wonderful!" Ms. Keane said, gasping in awe.

"Thanks." Blossom said, happily.

"Blossom, what a nice thing you're doing." Ms. Keane said, kneeling down towards Blossom.

Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

The other girls are watching from the window, stunned and livid over Blossom being praised rather than punished by Ms. Keane.

"That stupid goody-goody Blossom never gets in trouble!" Buttercup said, and the hotline starts to buzz, and she picks it up. "Hello?…A robbery?…We'll be right there!"

Outside Pokey Oaks Kindergarten…

Bubbles and Buttercup fly into view; Blossom has an ice cream cone in her hand and two kids eyeing it eagerly.

"Hey, ice princess! We got work!" Buttercup said, angrily.

"Oh, okay. I just gotta finish making snow cones for everybody." Blossom said, looking between Bubbles and Buttercup.

"Forget it." Buttercup said, looking at Bubbles, disgustedly. "Come on, Bubbles!"

Bubbles and Buttercup fly away.

Townsville…

There is a store with its front window smashed. An alarm blares as two masked crooks flee the scene, laughing. They climb into a getaway car, a third crook in the driver's seat.

"Did you get the ice?" The driver asked.

A bag was set on the seat and opened. It is full of jewels.

"Oh, yeah!" The crook said, angrily.

The car roars off, but Bubbles and Buttercup are in hot pursuit.

"Not so fast, bad guys!" Bubbles and Buttercup said, at the same time.

"The Powerpuffs! Step on it!" The crook said, terrified.

The driver puts his foot on the floorboards. The engine temperature gauge jumps into the red danger zone. One of the tires glows red and finally bursts—the car is now riding on its wheel rims. The two girls are in flight, realizing they have the advantage now.

"We've got 'em now!" Buttercup yelled.

Blossom catches up with them.

"Here I am. Did I miss anything? Oh, look! Bad guys! Stand back, girls!" Blossom said, taking a deep breath.

"No, don't!" Buttercup said, worried.

Too late. Bubbles and Buttercup watch helplessly as the ice blast freezes trees, buildings, two cops who are about to give chase, a group of people waiting at the bus stop, and the road the getaway car is traveling on—downhill all the way. The car skids away at high speed.

"Whoops!" Blossom said, looking between Buttercup and Bubbles.

"Thanks, Blossom!" The crooks said, from inside the car, waving back at her.

Blossom is looking very sorry and guilty. Her sisters have their backs to her.

"Way to go, ice princess!" Buttercup said, sarcastically.

"You did a bad thing, Blossom." Bubbles said.

"I know." Blossom said, flying to the frozen cops. "Sorry, Mr. Policeman." She flew to the bus stop. "Sorry, people of Townsville." The redhead flew to a tree. "Sorry, tree." She looked between Bubbles and Buttercup. "I promise I will never use my ice powers again!"

Blossom looked up at the sky, to not think about what she's done.

"Whew—is it me, or did things just get a little hotter?" The narrator asked.

Mayor's office…

The mayor is looking through a telescope while Ms. Bellum watches him.

"Staring at the sun again, Mayor?" Ms. Bellum asked.

"Yes! I'm trying to find the source of this he—ooh!" The mayor said, looking through the telescope. Something large and fiery is descending toward Earth. "Goodness gracious, great ball of fire!"

Ms. Bellum is looking out of the office window, "Yes, it's called the sun."

"No! There's another giant ball of fire, and it's heading straight for Townsville!" The mayor said, looking at the fireball in flight, through his telescope.

Townsville…

The huge flaming meteor casts a sick glow over the girls; Bubbles and Buttercup look toward Blossom, but she turns her eyes away, refusing to help due to her new promise.

"Come on, Bubbles!" Buttercup said, angrily.

The two fly up toward the fireball as townspeople scream in terror. They stop short.

It's too hot!" Bubbles said, sweating, covering her face, causing her to scream as the fireball thunders toward her, and is pulled to safety by Buttercup. "Thanks, Buttercup."

They fly back to town as the crowds continue to panic in the growing shadow of the fireball. They find Blossom moping on a rooftop, not looking at them.

"Blossom! Hurry!" Bubbles and Buttercup yelled, at the same time.

"Use your ice power!" Buttercup said, angrily.

"No. It's bad." Blossom said, sadly.

"But Blossom, the giant fireball's gonna destroy Townsville!" Bubbles said, with a rising shriek.

"But I made a promise to the Professor."

"Blossom, forget your promise to the Professor and DO SOMETHING! Do the promise you made to Jared for goodness sake!" Buttercup yelled.

Buttercup and Bubbles scream as the fireball continues its approach and they brace for certain impact. Blossom finally turns around to face it and flies up. She takes a huge breath—bigger than any of the others—and starts to blow. Slowly but surely, her ice breath spreads over the surface and puts out the inferno.

Mayor's office…

"Oh, good! Blossom has stopped the giant fireball." The mayor said, looking out the window.

"Yes, but now there's a giant ice ball hurtling towards us." Ms. Bellum said.

"Yes, but it's not a giant fireball!"

The ice ball continues to descend, but one good hit from the girls pulverizes it into a snowstorm. The townspeople cheer. Back to the office window.

"It's so cold! We could really use a giant fireball about now." The mayor said, shivering.

Ms. Bellum sighs in disgust at the Mayor's idiotic thought after what the Girls just saved them from.

Townsville…

The girls return to Townsville and find it covered with snow.

"Wow, Blossom, your ice power is really great!" Buttercup said, excitedly.

"Sí!" Bubbles cheered.

"Yeah, it sure was, but—I think I used it all up." Blossom said, frowning.

"You mean it's all gone?" Buttercup asked.

"Uh-huh."

"Well—I guess you're back to just being normal again."

"Yep." Blossom said, shivering, sneezing, and blowing out a burst of fire that chars her sisters from head to toe. "Oops. Sorry, guys."

"Oh, Blossom." The narrator said, laughing.

The standard end shot comes up.

"'Ice' still think you're cool. So once again, the day is saved—thanks to the Powerpuff Girls! So long, everybody." The narrator said.
