Chapter 1 - It all begins

(Background information.)

This takes place way into the future where magic is present but not commonly used. The world is infested with a humanoid parasite called project havoc, it was originally created to be used in warfare for countries to gain the upper hand. Project havoc was deadly and highly intelligent it made nests in areas that produced monsters of any kind, some nests were so powerful they took over entire countries.

The name project havoc is only known by government officials, a normal person or a guild member would only know about the nests and how they popped up one day and took over more then half of the world, project havoc has never been seen before because of how many nests that surround it. All the scientists that created it are dead the same goes for the nations that used it.

There are guilds and domes around the world that house the last of mankind. One is called Dome Eden and is the most densely populated and the strongest dome. The humans inside use relics found in the parasites nests that are ranked F, D, C, B, A, S, S+,S++ (The last three are rare to the point that there is only a small number of them in the world.) Guns are used to maintain peace in the domes but have no effect on Parasites.

Parasites can come in many different sizes, but one thing they all do is tear away at the world by killing everyone and everything in sight, one could've started as a wolf. Only to be changed in a disgusting or sometimes beautiful way. The way the wolves could turn could just simply cosmetic. It's legs could shorten or lengthen, it's skin could change, it could have boils all over its body. It could gain new body parts, it could gain magic, or it could lose or gain a sense. Some new and completely random species could spawn from others like a Minotaur. The possibilities are truly endless.

When adventurers first start their soul is tested to see if they have a aptitude for a specific job. It also measures how powerful they can become. In some cases the adventurer can get stronger then anticipated but their jobs never change. It's usually something random and never follows a certain bloodline, like if for example someone was an offspring of someone with a unique job their kid could have a completely different job.

(End of background information.)

A 21 year old person named Morrigan, was walking through a empty mansion that was overgrown with plants everywhere the eye could reach. This house was passed down to him thanks to his inheritance, but fell into disrepair because of neglect. As he walked he looked at paintings on the wall. Most were worn out but some were in decent condition. The thought of selling them crossed his mind for a moment. But he shook his head and felt disgusted with himself.

As he passed a mirror he would stop and look at it. Brushing his unkept ginger hair out of his face. He despised how curly it was, it made him look like a mushroom. The length didn't help either, it stuck up in weird places. Always growing in different places at a time. If only he could cut it all off, that would be a nice change.

Looking into a mirrior for a moment, he would pick a speck of dirt of his cheek. Looking into his Emerald eye. A hand touching the large scar that ran through his left eye. As he let out a sigh he would try to remember what caused it. But it happened when he was too young to remember it. The sheer size of it made him look like a gangster, it ran from his hairline all the way down to the left side of his jaw.

A unattached feeling swept over him as both of his hands fell to his side. Why was he even here? This place was too old and rundown to sell. There was no use for him to check it out. His gaze fell to the floor as he turned away from the mirror, continuing his tour of the place.

Looking up at one of the paintings, his eye would be caught by the bright colors. It was one of a landscape littered with mountains and a large blood red lake that oddly shined. A figure clad in broken ebony armor laying in the middle of the lake. Staring up at a blacked out sun as a creature descended one of the mountains. The painting was so entrancing yet disturbing at the same time that he walked over to it and stared for around 5 minutes. A feeling of longing made him want to touch it, when he did the painting fell to the ground hitting his foot.

"Ack!- shit!!"

He would yell out flinching in pain, his focus on it breaking. The bottom rim of the paintings frame would break off. Opening up the back of it, a little letter falling out of it. A few moments of swearing while gritting through the pain would pass. His curiosity on the painting increasing. Why the hell was it so heavy? His sight would land on the letter. Tilting his head a little he would pick it up, his palm glowing a white color as the letter was consumed into his hand. Something else caught his eye so he put off the letter for now.

[Spatial storage-Lesser]

This spell has the ability to house 10 small objects for a even smaller fee of 5 mana points. This type of magic is common for people new to the concept of magic and is hardly ever used because of its sister version [Spatial storage-Mediocre] that holds bigger items and more things.

When the painting fell it revealed a dark red stone in a pocket inside the wall. It glowed intensely, he felt as if it was familiar in a way but couldn't place his finger on it. Out of instinct he reached to grab it only to stop in front of it to see sparks flying from it. Something was urging him to grab it but he was second guessing it.

'Screw it, what could go wrong?' His hand would touch the stone, his eyes glued shut. Afraid of what would happen. A moment would pass and nothing happened, the glowing that came from the stone would stop and so did the sparks, just as he was about to write it off as something weird his nose would start to bleed violently. A hand clasping to his nose, trying to stop the blood.

Not expecting this he would look around for something to stop the bleeding but failed. Without Morrigans knowing some of the blood that was on the stone was absorbed. He would rush outside trying to make the bleeding stop while making sure it didn't get on anything. When the bleeding stopped a screen would appear in his face with a phone on it, he would press the pick up button only to hear his boss yelling at him, her voice was utterly furious. She complained about his terrible attendance and how she always had to do this. Before he could even get a word in she hung up.

Rushing over to a rusty car parked outside the gates of the mansion. When he got in it immediately started to go to the destination he wanted without him needing to say a word. It proceeded to float into the air zooming into a cityscape that was bustling with people. One building towered over all the others and that was the guild hall of Dome Ivy, the dome Morrigan currently lived in.

He worked there, not as a adventurer but as a receptionist. His envy for those who got to live as a adventurer was immense. But those who traveled through domes and into the wilderness died due to the growing number of parasites. He was also way too weak to even think about being an adventurer so he had no choice but to work a mediocre life. Even his assigned job hated him! It was "Worker."

The car he was in landed in a parking space behind the guild hall. Immediately after the car landed he hopped out of the car and ran to the guild hall door. Rushing past the groups of adventurers that were taking jobs to destroy nearby nests. All to see a angry woman glaring at him, her name is Monique, but her adventurer name is The Silver Cross. She's also the guild vice-master and a A-ranked paladin.

"Morgan . . . You're late, again. Two hours late to be precise, mind telling me what the hell you've been doing? Because I've just about had it with you, this is the 5th time you've been late IN. A. ROW. and on top of that you didn't even have a excuse!"

"It's Morrigan- You also didn't re-"

Being cut off Morrigan would sit there taking the scolding, the property he just visited was one that not many know of and was supposed to stay that way because of the contract he signed when he received it. After what seemed like a hour of scolding, she let him go, if she could she definitely would fire him. But thanks to the recent dip in workers, not many people wanted to deal with the adventurers.

"I apologize for my ineptitude ma'am…"

She would turn away clicking her tongue with a angry look. 'He might as well be a useless dog with that skill of his. The one that makes him late all the time.'

Looking over at the desk where only one other person worked, his name is Benjamin but most people call him Bennie. As Morrigan looked at Bennie he would wave to him vigorously. Bennie has always been great friends with him because of them meeting very early in life. They were only 7 when they met and were inseparable since then. Bennie also happened to be his only friend. His scar scared away most of the little kids his age. But oddly enough Bennie had no such reaction, he actually sought out Morrigan.

"Morning Bennie, sorry about being late, I lost track of time again." Bennie would just wave off the last bit not really caring, he got paid extra for every hour Morrigan was late so it never really bothered him. The reception hall wasn't that busy right now because of all the members working on a job already or was still planning on their course of action for a raid.

Heading over to the back of the counter and into the the employee changing station. He would change his clothes into the ones he had in his car, heading to the front desks again. A lot more people had arrived, mainly the people who took small jobs such as finding a lost cat. For the rest of his shift he would be taking people's job requests marking them as "In progress."

While Bennie took completed jobs from people, marking them "complete" and giving people rewards. All the new adventurers weren't allowed to take any jobs until a week after they have their soul analyzed. So they don't get themselves killed by doing a difficult quest. It's also meant to be used for buying information from merchants.

For some reason he felt extra sluggish today. Closing his eyes he would hold up his head with his fist. Accidentally falling asleep. Only to be awoken by a loud bang on the reception table. Jerking awake he would jump up from his swivel chair. A weak smile forming when Monique glared at him. Looking over at the clock, signaling the end of his shift. Walking away soon after.

He would stretch out his arms letting out a tired yawn. Bennie would walk over to him with a triumphant grin. Bear hugging Morrigan and twirling him around. With a bright smile on his face he would hug Bennie right back. Once he set Morrigan down he would raise his hands into the air, giving Morrigan a double high-five. Morrigan would head to the changing room. Once they both changed the pair would talk to each other saying their goodbyes for the day and heading home.

"Oh one more thing Morrigan! Can you come over to my house tomorrow? I have something important to tell you. I've been meaning to tell you for a long time!"

A light nod would come from Morrigan as he waved goodbye.
