The travelling group had camped at the foot of the mountain the night before, so they immediately began to climb the mountain as soon as they set off. There was no feasible way around it, so they could only climb over it if they intended to carry on with their journey.
At first, the area around the path was very quiet. Too quiet. It grated on Lux's nerves, because even the birds that usually hung around were currently absent. It was too strange. Normally, one would expect to see some birds flying in the sky, or maybe perched on a root that was protruding from the wall that ran along their path, but there was absolutely nothing.
Kai turned around nervously. His instincts screamed at him that something was wrong. That something was coming.
"Dad..." He spoke slowly, scared that raising his voice might break the delicate balance that hung in the air.
"Don't worry, we'll be fine." Lux turned back and gave his people a reassuring smile.
