Counting up to thirty without going crazy is the only way to patiently wait for this
damn elevator, but I've reached a hundred and it still doesn't decide to open.
I swear softly and bring the inside of my cheek between my teeth as I begin to give up
staring at the stairs a few steps away, but I prefer to wait twenty-four hours sitting
on the bench next to the entrance until the lift works again, rather
than use the stairs and risk meeting that pervert on the first floor.
I curse again and start to turn around with the intention of going back to take
place on that shabby rusty bench, but I stop in place suddenly when
I sneak up on Matthew passing by and heading towards the stairs without watching me.
I take advantage of the fact that he has turned his back and pays no attention to my presence to follow him
without thinking twice.
I despise him, so much that I don't think I've ever met a man so proud and domineering in my entire life, but the memory of how he treated Paul in that party repeats itself over and over in my head and makes me feel almost ... protected.
I take a grimace at my thoughts as I glance quickly over his huge shoulders, trying not to pay attention to the reliefs of his muscles against the light tissue of the
white shirt he wears.
It seems that his shoulder blades get wider with each passing day, as his body gets more and more powerful and menacing, which makes me realize that he has been practicing boxing for lots of years.
Sideways I follow him behind and try to memorize the scene I find myself in front of,
as every single fiber of his back contracts and relaxes slowly, as if he wasn't just walking.
I hate to admit it, but his body is breathtakingly monstrous, so much that I'm not able to take my eyes off his shoulders even when Paul's apartment door suddenly opens wide, but it takes me a couple of seconds to notice his
presence, when he is about to speak to me and stops noticing the presence of the man in front of me,
although this time Matthew continues to walk with indifference.
I don't know if it was a coincidence or Paul really does nothing but guard the entrance to watch
if I pass in front of his apartment, but at the very thought that he wants to catch me alone to hurt me makes me shiver.
I mentally curse Matthew for not intimidating him like he did last time he
and Paul saw each other, although out of the corner of my eye I notice that the jerk in front of
me slows down as we continue walking to get closer to
Paul and overtake him.
I swallow the lump in my throat and the blood stops flowing in my veins when for a
thousandth of a second I cross his very clear eyes from a distance, and then immediately turn them away
later when I realize that they are so red and shiny that surely he will be drunk.
Unlike Matthew in front of me, I don't think twice about picking up the pace
to overtake both him and Paul as my breathing quickens and I feel my heart begin to
beat madly.
I try to appear as confident of myself as possible and put on an indifferent expression
when I find myself next to climbing the stairs next to Matthew's powerful body, but
as I move quickly away from him and Paul with the intention of getting to the floor
upstairs and lock myself in my apartment as soon as possible, I have to
back off when Matthew's hand suddenly encircles my forearm and drag me back.
I snap my head up as my back collides with his chest
in front of Paul's apartment, which I'm sure is looking right now, just few
steps away, as I take a frown and try to hide the chills that are crossing my spine as Matthew's hand slips lower and lower,
stroking my skin until it reaches my hand.
I meet his damn dark eyes as she looks at me from above, but I don't understand her intentions until his fingers cross mine and, without moving from my
shoulders, slowly lowers to my face, passing the mesmerizing gaze
from my pupils to my lips.
I widen my eyes when I notice his gesture and I hasten to lower my head
when I understand that he wants to take advantage of the situation and kiss me in front of Paul, but instead
of walking away, even if he assumes an annoyed grimace and sighs heavily against my
hair, he just puts her lips on my forehead to leave a kiss so gentle that makes my heart rise in my throat.
A trail of chills runs through every single fiber of my body, but this time not for the
fear, but for a strange feeling that I don't think I've ever felt before and that
makes me feel so weak that I don't like it at all.
His hand squeezes mine between his fingers so much that I hold my breath and forget to
having a rapist behind my back while my hand leaks into his hot, rough palm,
making me realize I have too small a hand compared to his.
I straighten my back and return to reality when I hear the door of Paul's apartment
being slammed hard, hurrying my hand away from Matthew's like
I suddenly got burned, as I take a step forward to get away from his body
and turn to his side with an angry expression.
"I didn't need your help." - I say between my teeth, without raising my voice too much and being heard by Paul.
