Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

The wind blew strong by the time the sun started to finish its rotation, setting us for the evening. I suppose that it's normal in this type of season— whatever season it is. I'm not sure of how long we actually stayed here, since I had the realization that I made the mistake to not keep track of what day it is. We were camping on Friday, that's all I remember. It could be one of us that actually kept track of how many days and nights passed, starting from the day we ended up here. I'm only sure that we have tackled down another day, with just the four of us now.

The three of them stayed behind around the porch of the shack while I ran quickly back in the institution to retrieve the floorboard, that it would be best to leave with the journal and torn shackle belt. The light of the sun made me felt safe about wandering the halls alone, my ability to look in the classrooms without a deadbeat flashlight. My footsteps pounded through the red carpet as I swung into

Running through the fields and sidewalks reminded me of last night, which was enough to send chills down my spine. I was already ready to leave this area, and even the game, in hope that I'd forget what horrible events occurred here. The heat of the sun had warmed my body and my nerves, leaving me more worried for what would happen next.

"I found it again," I presented the floorboard to the three of them, their eyes observed in surprise. The red painted words from under the board, as it would be facing the floor.

"Wow— it 's really on a floorboard. I'm still impressed that you managed to come across this loose floorboard," Finn wowed in response.

"You're that dense or something," Candice gawked at the surprised Finn.

I placed the wooden evidence on top of the small journal diary, enclosed by the torn strap belt. I quickly dusted my hands off before closing the shack door, "I am too. It already happened so I don't care to think much about how I was lucky enough to break off the right floorboard."

"I would care a lot," Finn responded to my tired remark before jumping off the porch, "you are just lucky enough to not miss this critical evidence."

Ace chuckled along with Candice, "That's why we've included it as we were discussing the purpose of the institution. We've already settled on that idea so what now?"

Along with others, I stopped and gazed at the surroundings around me as I think of what to do next, glancing back at the shack had reminded me that Hayden's body still laid inside. We still have enough time in the day to find a burial spot for him. The heat was enough to make me sweat from the insides and by the look of the three faces, we're not willing to stand around in the heat for any longer.

Shoving the small journal into my back pocket, I peered into the shack. "Before we do anything else, and before Hayden's body starts to rot, let's bury him first."

With a look of agreement from the three, Candice got to work with looking for an empty spot to dig a ditch in. Though, the look in her eyes had already told me that she would just dig another grave next to Bailey and Chase. She separated from the others as she headed towards the direction of the exit.

"Candice!" I called out to her as I jumped off the porch and jogged towards her.

She looked back at me before walking towards me, "I'm just checking if we have any room—"

I panted for air as I started to express my worry at her, "I know but someone should go with you since… you know… Ash could still be roaming around—"

"And kill me? I wouldn't let that worry you as of now. It's daytime and it's hot as hell too. I doubt that if Ash is still around, he wouldn't roam around as a werewolf and kill me." Candice interrupted with a small chuckle. She had a slight bit of wariness on the ends of her lips as she ensured that she'll be okay walking alone.

I deeply knew that theres no certainty that a werewolf would choose to go out and hunt during the day, I got worried for nothing.

I nodded at her as I trusted my gut that nothing bad will happen, "Alright, hurry back quick and call for us if there's anything."

My eyes watched her run further to the exit, the gray color of her jacket disappearing behind the trees. I rubbed off the sweat my arms while I stood in silence, processing my thoughts over the heat of the air. The shade from the trees hasn't made my skin feel less yucky and I was in no mood to convince Candice of staying beside us. I didn't notice that the heat had made me feel lightheaded and dizzy.

"You should go get a drink of water," Ace stood from behind the trees, looking behind him to make sure Finn followed behind. He's a distance away from me but it's hard to even guess what he planned on doing.

I spoke up, "Ace-"

"So, Candice went to look for a place to bury Hayden. Specifically, right next by Chase and Bailey?" Ace pulled himself from behind the trees, with a slight proud smile on his face.

"Yeah…" I awkwardly confirmed his question, looking at the large empty pathway that served as one large exit into the main garden again; where Candice ran through.

"I feel bad for Bailey being buried next by those two shitheads," Finn came out from behind him with his own comment. His face crinkled up as if he was having a headache.

"There's not much we could do about it," Ace nudged is for us to walk back to the shack, his eyes focused on the dirt below him, "Besides, they might meet with each other somewhere."

Finn shook his head in denial, "I don't believe in that shit. Afterlife."

"You don't have to. The point that I'm making is that they're in a better place now, and I bet they're wishing the best for us. We've been through rough times since we got here," Ace suggested his positive thoughts about the situation for him. The look on his face as I knew that he's as hurt as everybody is right now, but he's trying his best to see the bright light in these dark times.

I couldn't help but smile as I see Finn, finally accepting of Ace's reassuring words, stumbling on Ace's shoulder for support. His injured shoulder being the worst thing that could happen for him. I'm more surprised that he was able to live this long.

The three of us neared the porch of the shack once again, and right back to thinking of what to do with Hayden's body. I can smell the faint stench from the idle corpse after I scooted closer to the door.

I cleared the mucus in my throat, "Right, how about finding a way to move Hayden's body once we find a place to bury him?"

The both of them looked at me puzzled as the question had lead them back on the right track. Their eyes wandered around the place as they brainstorm ideas. Though, the many gardening tools that we found throughout the place had me thinking of the right idea. It was that we had to move Hayden's body first— somehow.

"Then, let's find something that could move his body next by where the others are buried," Everyone agreed on that idea in order to be able to think of what to do next.

Ace walked away without a word. I knew that he wanted to go back to the experimentation room, his eyes are focused ever since he left.
