As Kyjus practiced conjuring bread, water and a variety of other minor spells and as the Rock-hyb prince trained with Hawk, Kelsee read of Copernicus and Merlin attempting to take in every word and description contained within the book.
It was during this period that her frustration grew. She could not understand the importance of all of this reading. She was a princess and a budding wizard in her own right. She could already do more with her art and her mind then many who had already donned the robes of ascension. (Ceremonial robes earned by those wizards that have graduated from Hamathal, the Elven School of Magic.)
On one particular day, when the Elven princess sat deep in thought wondering of the pointlessness of it all as she should be learning new spells and sharpening the talents she already possessed.
Just then the door opened and Kyjus and Syrus walked into the room. Syrus spotted the frustration immediately but kept a non-chalant posture about the encounter. It's time to see how Kyjus is at interpreting his surroundings he thought to himself.
Immediately he failed of course, as any 14-year-old boy would. "Well, it appears that Instructor Sheplin has not yet arrived, perhaps I will go over the levitation spell I read about last night," Kyjus said to Syrus.
Syrus nodded his agreement, so Kyjus went over to the opposite side of the room. It was a very small room but putting some distance between he and the princess was probably best since she seemed deeply engrossed in whatever it was, she was doing, and he certainly did not want to interrupt her by practicing his spells.
So, there he sat silently memorizing his levitate spell, after several minutes of deep thought he began to channel his energies, his body tingled as the aura of magic was pulsing through his being. Slowly he chanted the words of the spell at first nothing but after several attempts he felt his body getting lighter. He could tell he was still touching the floor, but it seemed like only part of his body kept its force upon the ground, something like you would experience with only partial gravity.
With his excitement came a distraction to his thoughts. This of course resulted in his body beginning to feel heavy again and ultimately in the failing of his spell. No matter he could do it now and the excitement racing through his body would not be ebbed.
He closed his eyes again but before he started, he took a peak over at Kelsee, she was somewhat halfheartedly watching, he smiled at the thought of her watching. He could not let that slow him down though, he was close, he could sense that much.
He began channeling again, this time the energies flooded into his body almost as fast as if one had flipped a switch. Within seconds he felt his body growing lighter and moments after that he was floating almost table height.
Kyjus sensed this and opened his eyes. Amazed he looked to Syrus while smiling with a triumphant look. Taking his thoughts off the spell he crashed to the ground with a thud. It hurt true but the excitement was more prevailing then the pain, so he quickly stood back up and turned to Syrus.
"Did you see that Syrus I was really levitating; I was a full three feet off the ground".
Syrus smiled and nodded that he had indeed seen this triumph.
"I of course am not wanting to ruin your little party here, but would it be too much to ask for some quiet", the princess said with perhaps a little more bitterness then she intended.
"Sorry my lady, I just got a bit overly excited by my accomplishment", Kyjus said with a short bow.
Kelsee could not tell if he was being patronizing or if in fact, he was being altogether sincere. She looked at him for a few seconds longer and then just shook her head and focused once again on her book.
Kyjus looked at her for a few minutes and it was obvious something was amiss with her situation, so he walked over and sat on the opposite side of the table from her.
"What is so troubling to you today princess, I know we haven't known each other long but is seems like you are bothered is there anything I can do to help", he asked her very sincerely.
"Just because you managed to levitate, a not so terribly complex spell, please do not think you can understand the affairs of wizards", she replied to him in a serious tone.
"I am not trying to understand the affairs of wizards" Kyjus replied with some disdain. "I was just seeing if you wanted to talk about it, sometimes it is good just to get things off your chest, you know discuss them with someone else and vent your frustration. Oh well If you wish to keep the trouble bottled up, I will not try and stop you, good day princess", Kyjus said as he stood to rise and walk off to talk to Syrus.
"Wait Kyjus, your right it would be nice to talk to someone it's just that was my relationship with my mother was all about and she is not here, and I guess I just did not entertain anyone else wanting to fill that role. I am sorry for being such a pain. If you're still willing to listen I would like to share my frustration", she said to him.
Kyjus nodded that he was indeed ready to listen.
As she started voicing her thoughts Kyjus sat down to listen.
"Well as you know I was trained by my mother." Kyjus nodded that he was in fact aware that her mother had trained her; Syrus had brought this fact up to him the night he and Kelsee first met.
"What you may not know is that my mother is a full telepath and quite an accomplished wizard in her own right. Before I left, she had said she had taught me all that she knew and that I must come here to learn from one more gifted then her", Kelsee said as tears rimmed in her eyes, probably from thinking about home Kyjus gathered.
Kyjus unfolded the handkerchief from his robe and handed it to her, she nodded her thanks,
"Well imagine my surprise when I find out my teachers is the spirit of the greatest Elven Wizard McKenna Everhart," Kyjus kind of sat there open mouthed in a bit of shock. This sprung forth questions for Kyjus, but he sat their silently.
Kelsee misinterpreted the look as recognition to the Elven wizard and continued. "I have been reading every day for the entire week that I have been on this planet and nothing new have I learned, it is very frustrating to me".
Kyjus sat there for a few moments thinking of how to word his reply. "So, what your saying is that this spirit does not know what they are doing?" he said somewhat timidly.
"I am not saying that at all. This was the most prominent Elven wizard of any era, she beat back the hordes of Dylonian's nearly invulnerable she was when she held this wand," Kelsee said as she held the wand that rested upon the table in front of her.
Kyjus leaned forward "so you're saying that you trust this spirit and her teachings then", he said to the Princess.
She nodded.
"Then as you're following her teachings look for reasons as to why you are reading these books. What are the common themes that may be hidden within the confines of their covers? If this spirit believed this path to be the correct one, then the reason for it must be there. I say keep your eyes open and you will find it," as Kyjus finished his thought the door to the room opened and Instructor Sheplin walked into the room.
"Young Master Kyjus I apologize for my lateness; it appears that my presence was needed by Council Leader Czelak this morning" he said as the door closed behind him.
"Nothing too serious I hope" Syrus said as moved away from the wall he was leaning upon.
Master Sheplin held out his hand, "We can speak of those things later, for now however we must get on with the young masters training".
The instructor opened the door and motioned for Kyjus to make his way through. Before Kyjus moved through the entryway he peered over to the Princess. She noticed the glance and nodded to him mouthing the words "Thank you" as he moved out of the room.
The young mage gave a quick yet sincere bow and excited the room behind his instructor.
Syrus, even though he was worried in regards to the contents of the earlier meeting between Master Sheplin and the council leader, could not help but smile at how the universe was shaping the lives of these two crucial pieces to their worlds survival. Just as it should be he thought to himself.
The princess sat alone in the room once again deep in thought over her conversation with Kyjus. It would appear there is more to him then the package would dictate she thought to herself. With that thought another notion popped into her head, it was something that her mother always said to her.
She would say that "help often appears to those that need it most, from those you least suspect". How true that seemed to Kelsee at this very moment. Perhaps there was hope for their quest yet.
With that thought she delved back into the writings of Copernicus, looking for the answers that just had to be there
