Footsteps echoed down the hallway, each thud lodging her heart deeper into her throat. It was late, everyone in the house should have been asleep. She should have been asleep as well but she couldn't bring herself to. Couldn't lay her little head on the pillows and allow peaceful slumber to engulf her. Not now. Not after last night.
The footsteps drew even closer and the heavy weight of panic settled firmly atop her chest. Breathing got harder, fear immobilized her.
Her eyes remained trained on her bedroom door. It wasn't the bedroom she was used to sleeping in each night but it was the one she always stayed in whenever she came to visit.
