Keeping true to his word, Leo had gotten everything in order for their departure by the early hours of the next morning. He had vehemently refused to heed Becca protests, unyielding and stubborn. If he had done otherwise, he knew his strategy would falter.
Leo also couldn't tell Becca the true reason for their abrupt departure. It was for the best that she stayed oblivious, at least for now. He knew he could protect her better this way, keep her close.
Becca followed him from behind, her nose crinkled, her lips set into a small pout while she glared daggers at the back of his head.
They bade their farewells to the rest of the family, Becca purposefully relegating more time to the benign task than it truly needed. When it came to Fernanda's turn, Becca engulfed the woman in a hug so firm that it was almost crushing.
Tears whirled in her eyes.
" I will miss you, grandma." Becca whimpered, her voice shuddering slightly.
