Chereads / The Core Of Humanity / Chapter 7 - New start

Chapter 7 - New start

Don layed down in bed after he vomited, again. The clock was showing 6:45 AM. Don couldn't fall asleep all night. The guilt was too big for having any peace and rest. He turned on a TV, maybe some distraction will help. Romantic movie, nope. Drama, nope, no more please. Jaws, next. The Hangover, nope, he has watched it x times and now he wasn't in a mood for comedies, next. Oh, Lord of the rings, that could do, his favourite. It was second movie and the scene where Gandalf appears in Fangorn forest. It actually helped but it lasted to short, now his thought are back. He went outside on balcony with some cold coffe that was left from who knows when. He sat down and looked down at the people that are heading at their jobs. He used to watch people often when he was studying. There were a lot more of them before. A lot of people quit their jobs and headed somewhere they think its safe, or at least safer than here. He would laugh past few days, if aliens attack there will be no safe pleace and if they don't but they are walking among us, they won't be here, in his city. That was... From all cities in the world, they are right here, in Ireland. Couldn't they just go to USA as always in movies? No, they came here, why not. His parents moved in Ireland 8 years before he was born, they are actually Croatians. Would his mother got sick if she stayed in Croatia? Who knows. Maybe she will eat something healthier there or life healthier in general. His mother never showed regrets about her moves. Don knew everything he has done was at that moment the best option but if his decisions hurt other, they can't be the right ones. Right? He heard some footsteps inside. Kay showed on the balcony door.

-"Good morning Don."

-"Hey Kay.. Listen, about last night.. I.."

-"Shh, it's okay, already forgoten, I promise."

-"Thanks, but, no man should act like that and I think you should know the reason behind that even there are no excuses for that behavior."

-"Don, I don't think you are less man then before or anything like that, I don't know why would you think something like that. You saved me and my brother and you will always be a hero in my eyes."

-"Me a hero? I wouldn't think so. That old man died because of me and... Those cops.."

-"Cops? I'm sorry, what?"

Don took a deep breath and told everything that happened after she and Alex left. After he finished Kay was shocked and didn't said anything for like a minute. Don was thinking that she must be hating him now, he is one useless nothing. She will probably go wake up Alex and then leave the apartment heading right to police station. That would be the right thing to do and he is ready to take consequences like a man, just once he will act like a man. Just then, Kay stood up, looked at him and put her hand on his shoulder.

-"You moron. You saved me and my brother, a complete strangers and a creature that's not from Earth in one night. You are calling yourself useless?"

-"Those people died because of.."

-"Shut up! I am talking now. You welcomed us in your apartment to rest, fixed my shoulder and fed us. That old man.. I'm sorry, but if you decided and went to help him, you would be in that dumpster too. And saving that creature? That is best proof of how noble and good person you are. I don't blame you for those cops either. I'm not blaming even that creature. Yes it's harsh I know but they were just in a wrong place in a wrong time. Everyone including aliens will choose themselfs in front of everyone. Just like the creature explained. I feel sorry for those cops you know I do but it was not your job to be saving them. Heads up, you were, are and always be a hero for me. I will be indepted to you as long as I live. That's the only thruth about that situation. You have done the best you could."

-"Kay.. I don't know what to say..."

-"I know. Promise me you will stop blaming yourself. You are a good man Don, I know that best."

-"I can't.. I.."

-"You can and you will. Promise. Me. Now."

Don smiled a little bit.

-"Can you fix everything? Because I have some problems with pipe in the kitchen."

They both laughed, maybe even to loud because little Alex was calling Kay to come. Probably they woke him up.

-"That's the spirit. Be a comedian not sad. So, you promise me?"

-"Yeah, I promise. Thank you Kay."

She turned around from the door while going to check on Alex and smiled.

-"You helped me so much that whatever I do, you should't not be thanking me, ever."

Don smiled a bit and closed his eyes. She is right. He has done his best to save as many he could. He can't save everyone, right?

After few minutes, Kay was back.

-"Hey Don, sorry but do you have some food? Alex is awake and breakfast would be great idea."

-"Sorry, I don't but I will go for some. Just let me change my clothes."

-"Okay, thank you. After we eat we are leaving. We must find our aunt."

-"Sure, If I can help somehow, just tell."

-"Oh, no. You already done too much aready. I can do this alone but thank you."

Don changed his clothes and went to buy some food at near store. When he got back, he made a quick breakfast. He felt some saddness that Kay and Alex will leave soon.

-"Kay, when you find your aunt and settle in. I hope you will visit me so I know everything is fine."

-"Sure I will. Both of us, right Alex?"

Alex nodded, he was to occupied eating for first time in God knows how much time. After breakfast Kay made some pancakes for desert and when they finished with everything it was time to say goodbye.

-"Alex are you ready?"

-"Yes sister. And thank you mister, for everything."

Don smiled and rubbed his hair gently.

"Your welcome you big guy."

Alex happily exited the apartment. Don turned to Kay who watched Alex was smiling, probably because seeing him happy.

-"Kay, what now?"

-"Well, I will manage to find her somehow. This is not New York in the end. Someone must have know her."

-"I wish you luck. If anything happens you know where you can find me."

She nodded and kissed him in the cheek then she took a deep breathing like she knew there is a lot of work to find their aunt. Don thought that he was red like an apple so he was looking everywhere, just not at Kay. When she left apartment he wanted to say that they can stay here more if they want to but he knew they must find their aunt and a home for longer term. He waved, wished them good luck once more and closed the door. The stron feeling that he will see them again made him feel better.

Kay left the building not knowing where to start their search. It was 11 am so they have all day in front themselfs but she was afraid that aunt moved or that something happened to her. They didn't seen her for a long time. She didn't even came to their parents funeral. As she is last family member they knew for, it was last hope for finding a home considering that they lived with parents in a rented apartment she can't pay anymore. She turned right just like Don told her. He said there is square where she could ask people if anyone knows their aunt. Also, Don borrowed her some money that she wasn't willing to take but he was so persistent that she agreed under condition that she will return it when she finds her aunt. Don watched them leaving from his window as long as he could see them. He hoped everything will be fine, they derseve good thing to happen to them and get some peace finally. He sat on his sofa, turned TV on and hoped that he will see them soon.

-Two Weeks Later-

Don was preparing his breakfast when phone rung. That gotta be his mother. Great, he was litteraly just thinking about calling her. Don picked up a phone.

-"Hello"

-"Good morning. Mister o Broin?"

Okay that was not his mother.

-"Yes, it's me. Who's calling?"

-"This is dr. Marion from St. Patrick's hospital. I'm calling you because I am supposed to be your future boss. So, I just want to inform you that your job application was accepted. Could you start next week?"

Hell yes! Finally, his dreams about saving people are coming true.

-"Oh, yes of course. Thank you for calling me."

-"No problem. See ya next monday Mr. o Broin."

-"Goodbye dr. Marion."

He was so happy. Now he have a chance to redeem himself for events that happened last week. He was trying to forgive himself and it is slitghly better now but he is still dreaming about... No. He won't think or talk about that, ever. He must focus now on his career and education. He dreams about be a doctor, more precisely surgeon one day. Now he holds title of "Bachelor of medicine" which means there are several more years in front of him to become a qualified surgeon. He picked up a phone again and dialed his mother's phone number. She will be so proud, he finally did it. She didn't answered. He waited until voicemail started, then he hung up. She must be either sleeping or at her chemotherapy. Never mind. He will call her later. He looked at the table at the food he was eating like five times a week and decided that he won't eat that shit anymore. It was good for it's price he must admit but now he can eat like everyone else. He don't have to look at his wallet a ask himself whether he will have until end of month or not. It's was hard since his mother was diagnosed with that damn cancer. Her therapies and new diet were expensive so he really don't know how they have money for sending to him every 5th in the month. They must have took a loan from someone, bank or friends. He can't even imagine their debt now. When he asks them about that they just say it's not his problem to worry about and usually just change subject. Of course was working some little side jobs but he couldn't find a real job besides his college. All free time he was spending on studying or getting some rest. Yes, he was living from money his sick mother was sending. Sad... But not anymore. Now he will be able to help them, they won't be worrying about financial problems ever again. He cleaned the table and decided to go to restaurant, he deserved it. Just this time. He was interupted with a knocking on his door. Who could that be now.. He left the plate on the table and went to check it. When he opened the door his initial shock mixed with fear and anger almost made him to black out. In front of the door was standing the creature he saved that damn night.
